Our 1989 MG Metro (same as yours, but in silver) had a scrunchy 2nd gear within a few years of new. I'm now CERTAIN its because they specified 10w40 oil back in the day, but actually 20w50 is far better for Minis & Metros.

A well sorted MG metro always a joy to drive, who needs any more horses under the bonnet? Trying to talk my parents into buying one as they're house will shortly be in the greater London ULEZ and the Metro will save £12.50 a day in tax. We're going to Silverstone later this month to see the classic car racing, apparently some Mini's will be there, and possibly Cortinas

Very sensible preventative maintenance, which you do to all your cars, once it’s done, it’s done for a number of years, as you say an investment. Milly sounded sweeter, on your drive home. I live in lincolnshire & few old car specialists here. Though I do a lot of mechanical work myself, I do use a local garage who has the know how with older cars, he lets me supply my choice of parts so genuine Mazda. He was working on a 1962 Standard Vanguard estate & Triumph TR6 last year, when my MX5 mk1 went in, I had following preventative jobs done : cambelt, waterpump, auxiliary belts, thermostat housing & stat, 3 awkward coolant pipes, upper suspension arms, fuel filter, ATF change, gearbox pressure regulator, brake fluid change etc, Which was similar to your bill, but I had not spent a lot for the previous 8 years, with only 1 advisory, which was upper ball joint dust covers perished & so I replaced the whole arms.

the heater sounds nice, mine has been completely broken since i bought it so i should do the thermostat, it also has a very weird issue where it misfires like hell if it's been sat for a few days, changed spark plugs and it fixed it a bit but i reckon the rest of the ignition system could do with a change, the unipart HT leads look original!

I’m at a loss how can you put the brakes shoes on the wrong way round ?

Essential work done I know, but you must have a very handsome pension or previously inherited a princely sum as some of the bills you smile at, they take my breath away.
