It's miles ahead of anything else not out of MG in terms of pricing, so what's the catch? What's wrong with it?

I’m the ‘guy at work’ who finally got his MG5 back after it took 72 days to get a replacement heater for my MG5. The fault turned out to be MG changed the part number on the heater and nobody queried it, so the part was never sent. That said, my garage sorted me out with the short range version of this model. If I had to choose between the short range ZS and the MG5, despite the older infotainment system, I’d still go for my short range 5. However, the model you guys reviewed would change that entirely and I’d go with the the long range ZS. It’s not quite as nice to drive as the 5, but all the other things make it a nicer car overall.

The catch as it turned out ……Please, please do not waste your money on an MG ev. Yes on the surface they are ‘good value’ but the reality in my experience unfortunately is that they are very poorly made, lose a fortune in value even in the first year and the garages that service them are basic and un professional. If you absolutely must buy one don’t buy it new at the very least. I’ve just sold mine in the uk, during my year of ownership I had two steering racks replaced (which was a nightmare because even the garage had to beg to mg to do it the second time) , the doors wouldn’t unlock in the rear, the rear seats when you folded them detached and I would say at least every 03rd time it would not turn on without turning it on an off. I would add something positive though , it was quite nice to drive and also I often got more range out of it in the summer than quoted. I brought it one year ago for £35,500 ( they are now selling them new for £26k believe) and have just sold it for the best offer i could for £19k. I’ve owned lots of cars, they all lose money but nothing like this and I’m not rich so couldn’t afford to keep making this mistake and don’t want anyone else to.

i recently bought an ex demo MG5 Exclusive; 5000 miles on the clock - £22,157. Previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover Vogue with LPG conversion - lovely vehicle but was starting to cost more to get through each MOT. Have watched your channel plus others that promote EVs and was impressed with what I saw. Love the MG5 - not quite as comfortable as the Range Rover but the joy of flying past filling stations, instant cabin heat - great value for money - smooth and sure footed car. I'm not worried about having an MG on the drive - it does everything that I need from a vehicle.

@dfishpool7052
@dfishpool7052 2 жыл бұрын
@@GavinScrimgeour Hi Gavin - no real issues but since I'm retired I'm not covering a vast mileage - the occasional top up of the battery using the 'granny' charger on Economy 7 is enough for the motoring that I'm doing. There was an issue when I had a home charger installed, a 'wallbox' - it was replaced and it still didn't work; following a full refund I had a Ohme Home Pro charger fitted - that failed to work and the company suggested that there was a fault the car. I had it fully checked out at the local dealers and it had a clean bill of health. The charger company replaced the Ohme Home Pro charger and it worked immediately after installation. The only issue with the vehicle at the moment is the driver's door handle which sometimes sticks in the open position - a minor gripe! Otherwise I have nothing but praise for the car so far!! The build quality is good, the built in satnav is a bit clunky but once the destination is set it gives very good clear mapping and audio instructions; the radio is equally as good as the Harmon Kardon one that was in may Range Rover plus that this has DAB. If you want to use Google maps then you can just plug in your 'phone. At the moment its doing 3 miles per kWh, in the summer I was getting 4 miles per kWh - I use the economy setting plus max regeneration - that seems fine. On cold mornings it quickly defrosts the screens and mirrors and the cabin heats up much quicker than petrol or diesel vehicles. Hope that the foregoing has been useful. If you do decide to buy one, shop around for the best deal. Finally, when I bought the car it was from 202 miles from where I live and the car managed it without needing a top up on the journey and showed that there was still 20 miles in the battery - the journey was on motorways for the majority of the distance.

I think that 15 - 20 years ago, there was a huge difference between car brands and that the cheap ones were cheaply made and you could tell. The gap between manufacture levels has decreased and I would dare say most if not all low brands have moved to the midstream and are all okay. The premium brands need to work harder to show their extra benefits and MG are certainly throwing a huge question when you save over £7000 from them to the next brand. Certainly an interesting car and maybe they should have a top level with all the toys!!

You're spot on, the gap between let's say Octavia/Golf and Audi A6 is way smaller than it was 20 years ago. If you drive a lot and can easily afford it, it still makes sense to go for higher tier cars, but for normal income people and normal usage, it's not worth it.

Or...now hear me out...the big brands have always been way over priced, especially the luxury brands, and a huge percentage of the price was the badge alone. Now that all cars are designed by software, they look similar, and so the only difference is the badge (and reliability which the luxury brands still suffer with, adding extra insult to the injury of the inflated price tag).

I had an original ZS EV Excite and going for a MG 5 long range.The ZS was pretty good but I had a charging fault which then screwed up the 12v battery.The dealer struggled to fix it and eventually put it down to water in one of the HV plugs,and after many months swapping the 12v battery.The other snag was the winter efficiency in the cold,windy,rainy nights on the motorway was not brilliant.About 2-2.2 miles/kWh so slipstreaming became necessary.Not sure if the new one will be better.Apart from that it was pretty good.

I have had the long range Trophy model for a month now and I’m very pleased with it. The only issue was the heater not working but that was because I kept it in Eco mode and to save power it cuts the heater in that mode. When driving it slowly around town it has a range of 350 miles but this drops to about 200 miles on motorways or less with lights and heating on. Looking forward to some warm weather to see if the range improves. After 1200 miles it’s great, love driving it and would recommend the MG Trophy to all my friends and family.

less than 200 on the motorway with heating and lights more or less rules this out for me. I do c.100 miles to work and back every day (+ other pootling about) but I live high on the Pennines, with some serious hills going on. I imagine with the motorway, the always cold-climate and the hills, the range could drop to 150 or even less. This just makes me nervous to spend so much money and feel so limited. I imagine having to charge every single day can't be good for the battery over the long term

We're hopefully going for a test drive in this on Monday. After watching your video I'm really looking forward to it. Where did you find it for £27k I'd love to know that. Some EVs are getting to the point of pricing us out of the ev market not because of the overall cost of ownership but because of the monthly payment. But I really don't want to go back to buying petrol. We've been driving electric since 2013 - 2014 (I can't remember which) and other than the odd loan car have never paid for petrol in that time.

I don't think you should wait for Ora Cat, because the production in China is restricted due to supply chain issue. Ora has three models, White Cat, Black Cat and Good Cat (the one to be introduced in the UK). Ora has stopped accepting orders for White Cat and Black Cat. The price for Ora Good Cat was also adjusted upwards. Not just Ora, all EV makers in China are increasing prices for EV because raw materials prices are climbing quickly. For example, BYD has increased Dolphin EV's prices TWICE within the last month. Inflation is real. Everything, from batteries to iron, are getting more expensive. On top of prices increase, customers also have to wait longer for the EV to be delivered. Probably, Ora doesn't know how to price the car in the UK, given the volatility in raw materials prices and low volume of production. My suggestion is that, get an EV now, before the price hike.

As a fan of value you might like to know that my MG5EV just had its one year dealer service with the low mileage discount (I've only done four thousand miles this year with working from home) and it cost me the princely sum of £41. That included a year of AA breakdown cover, too, which costs just short of sixty quid on its own. I've not exactly hammered the miles out, but I've had no issues so far and I can't knock the running costs. It's surprisingly efficient, too, getting a solid 200 miles on the motorway in autumn weather (about 180 in freezing winter).

One thing which reviewers seem to overlook is the regen braking set up on the ZS. Unlike an ID3, Ioniq or eC4 which increase the level of regen as the brake pedal is applied, regardless of which regen level has been selected, the friction brake only coming into play to kill the last 2-3 mph. The ZS can only go to a pre-set maximum in each of the three settings and uses much more friction braking when the brake pedal is operated. Its even worse in ACC. NO regen whatsoever is used - its purely reliant on the friction brake for slowing down. MG seem to lost the plot over this, perhaps in the pursuit of making it cheaper or to make the system less complex. Either way it's a disappointing situation and wouldn't make it my choice of EV

Great review, as always. Good to see some real world comparisons (at least the prices), this really does almost tick all my boxes. I think the only thing you missed out was the 10%-80% recharge time. I guess summer range is about 210-230 if sticking to that “middle ground” of range with your charging regime. So that is fine for my bladder range, tick! But if I have to wait 45mins (I.e. 15 mins longer than I would budget for a pit stop with food) then I might start questioning my decision to buy it. Can you or someone else with one let me know how they get on with that on long range trips? It’s not a massive amount of time but over 25 trips it’s almost a day wasted. Personally, I’m hoping charging becomes the new “range” metric, when cars can do the 10-80 in sub-20 minutes or add 50-100 miles in about 10 then one of the final arguments for ICE is crumbling.

I've got one of these on order to, hopefully, come in May. I visited Kia and loved the look of the e-Niro, but the price was like 😳 Went to see the Hyundai Kona- HATED IT!! I don't know how that's being raved about. It felt so cheap after the e-Niro! It felt and looked like a child had fixed a box inbetween the front seats. Then the MG. Couldn't fault it. I was thinking there must be a catch, because, to me, it was waaay closervin quality to the e-Niro. So I went to look at the Peugeot e2008. The drive on that was smooth. It looked great, inside and out. My issue was how low it was. And the battery was a lot smaller than the MG. My friend came with me on the test drive on the MG. She said "why are you even bothering to have another look at the Peugeot? It's a no brainer! You're considering a car that isn't as good, just for a tiny light feature?!". The Peugeot has a led type interior light that I loved. Turns out you can buy those on Amazon if you want them. So MG it was!! And I have no regrets or second thoughts. Because it really is the best out of the 4. In terms of price, features, battery. Gotta be weighed up like that. It equals the Kia if you weigh it up on price and what you're getting.

Hi Both. Been watching you both for over three years but have now gone the whole hog and spent the 99p so been looking back over the channel at you and Harry. I’m a new EV owner we’ll newish had my Nissan Leaf for 2 1/2 years, had 8 Nissan’s mostly Qashqui petrol and diesel when I was working. I’ve started to look at what to get next ? 1. Happy with the EV type. 2. Would like a Qashqui in electric, told Nissan I think they have missed the boat on this one as I’m looking at other makes. 3. Will probably go and get a MG ZS or 5 ? 4. It’s cheaper than a Leaf and would go for the larger battery to replace my 40 kWH Leaf, as it’s like a Qashqui. The only thing I may not get that I like with my Leaf is the very good ONE PEDEL DRIVING which I use most of the time. So what do you both think? Most EV reviewers rate the MG value for money every time. I’m so disappointed with Nissan they are losing customers and letting others take there business away from them. I also have home charging, plus solar panels and home battery. 18 months ago traded in my wife’s petrol Corsa for a used EV Zoe with battery lease, 28,000 miles on it for £6,000 pleased with that deal also. As both of us don’t do the mileage that we used to, active 70 year olds living in Kent England. Thanks Bob Blood.

Really like the look of these. Potentially my next EV after my e208. The only thing I think that lets it down is the charging speed. Would be great if they were able to charge at 100+kW, then it would be unstoppable on long journeys. An hour to charge to 80% is quite long.

Hi Guys, thoroughly enjoyed the video. I bought my ZS EV Luxury last sept and have now done 5500 kms. I paid 18,000€ for it BRAND NEW, as it was a run-out model before the facelift version came in. We both love it to bits but there are things I would change : 1. During winter temps (down to -7°) the range is affected significantly, above 7° max range in Eco mode with HVAC turned off is 260-280 kms below 0° it's more like 230-240 kms. I plug her in most nights from about midnight to 8am; 2 the cabin heater is not hot enough during the above cold temps; 3. The ride is slightly on the firm side. I'm very pleased with the car to the extent that in the foreseeable future I can see myself upgrading to a long-rang ZS or Model 5 estate. Do You know if the car you tested has a heat pump for the HVAC or a coiled wire resistance like in fan heaters and my car? PS I almost always drive my car in ECO mode - no problems with traction, more range all good. PPS - March 12th 2022 In the milder temps we are currently enjoying I am getting 310 kms from an overnight charge.
@1981therealfury
@1981therealfury 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David. I have the pre face-lift MG ZS ev as well and I can tell you that the Eco mode does next to nothing to increase range apart from decapitation the cabin heater and dulling down throttle response to try and get you to accelerate slower. With Eco on the cabin heater is next to useless and I tested driving both in Eco mode and in normal mode with no AC on and efficiency was virtually identical. As such I don't believe driving in Eco mode is worth it, especially when heat is more important than eeking out those extra couple of miles.

We want an EV for camping. Don't like wide cars, but need the carrying capacity. This is compact - only 1809 mm wide (cf 1852 for the ID.4, 1890 for the Kia Ioniq 5) - yet has reasonably space and the towing capability of 500kg which means we can take our Erde trailer when we need extra space. Must give this a try. Incidentally, really good point about the money saved being spent on solar panels, which can then be used to charge the car for free!

If the price is right, and they keep it under $50k AUD driveaway, this long-range MG EV will blow up in Australia, where range anxiety remains a thing. As long as there is fast-charging, the ability of this car to be used for road trips will be a step change here for people wanting to buy an EV but worried they can't take it on long trips, and so settling for a PHEV instead.
