MGB Going through some changes over the last couple of years. Best played in full screen and loud, a few pics at start but let it play.

You did a good job and your perseverance is to be applauded, I think many of us were thinking we'd rather have the engine roar over Florence or whoever it was though.

Nice conversion. I did one with a mx5 engine and gearbox, modified prop shaft. Went well. Best was a Rover v8 conversion, bit of a tight fit, manifolds were a pain, but boy did it go.

Love MGB Gts , Love the fact there are so many of them that altering one does nt destroy a valuable classic. Spare parts are cheap and it is such a good looking car. I have to say the B series engine has a much better sound than a modern unit though. Very good work and a great video!!

Very well done ! I love the concept, process and the outcome ! Ive owned plenty of British Autos and my MG B was my favorite as i kept that one on the road for over 14 years I’m between homes at the moment due to a Traumatic Brain Injury That forced me to do a early retirement and i do hope to one day Aquire another B and do something kind of radical with it i like the idea of repowering it with Ford Small block power sort of making a Shelby Cobra concept as ive seen quite a few in the United States and the overall fit on the car winds up looking like it belongs in the car and the exterior look of the car stilll retains its originality of appearing Stock untill you hear it running of course

Awesome build, I was torn between this powerplant and the MX5 1.8 unit...I went with the latter only because I had a car laying around.

What a nice project! I've got a GT like yours. I would like to make that kind of engine swap some day. I've also have a race B roadster. Greetings from Central America.

I kinda like the duratec with the.yams kinda sounds like a properly tuned MGB with a hint of Ferrari steroid added for good measure. I HAD A LIPSTIC RED.CORGI MGB AS A CHILD. I MISS IT SO.HAPPY MOTORING!😅

Any pics of how the engine mounts was fitted and what they looked like? I'm interested in doin a 1600 crossflow conversion on 1
@chrishenniker59444 жыл бұрын
I'd love to do the 2.5 litre big block version of the Duratec from the trucks, more torque and no substitute for cubic inches, then put it in an Austin A55 or Farina Cambridge. Then make it my daily driver.

Hi Saw the article on your motor in MG Enthusiast last month and now the youtube video. Great looking conversion, couple of questions. In the MG article the heater is in place, in the video it appears to have been removed was this done as part of the conversion ? Other than the engine mounts did you have do modify any body work ? Many thanks
@marcusprice319910 жыл бұрын
Im looking at either Duratec or zetec into my MGB. Prefer Duratec engine but zetec has the exhaust on the "right" side to avoid the steering. How much clearence did you have and what exhaust manifold did you use? If I go zetec I will use type 9 but will go with mazda 6 speed if I go duratec. Anything you encountered along the way that might help me?
@Mg-cg9yr10 жыл бұрын
I used standard manifold, then sliced it along the flange and re welded it so the tubed were pointing closer to the block so it missed the steering. No major problems, just don't put the engine too far back as I did. It took a year and a lot of work to get the heater back in.

That is an awesome build mate! Did you make a build thread anywhere? How hard would you say the conversion was? :)

How much would it cost to replace an engine like that? Does the gear transmission need to be replaced as well?

Awesome man. Impressed this was done out of a lockup garage as well. I wanted to know how the welder held up with a generator? Thinking of a similar setup.

MGB 72UK very poorly. I had to get them remade by a pro. Thanks for the positive comment tho
@MGB72UK6 жыл бұрын
itsawindupuk Shame. Did you hit many other tasks you couldn't achieve with a genny and the lockup? What exactly went wrong with the welding. Cheers for the reply!
@MG-Driver6 жыл бұрын
My generator was not powerful enough, plus I was using an arc welder which required instant high current. Other than that, everything else was achievable.
@MGB72UK6 жыл бұрын
itsawindupuk Awesome. Do you think MIG would be ok?
@JeffyG Жыл бұрын
Dang! No mention of the hp rating from the Duratec. How much?
@MG-Driver11 жыл бұрын
no its using a 5 speed type 9 gearbox. The gearbox has a duratec to type 9 bell housing.

Great build. Very clean install, bummer that it ate a trans. Small suggestion you may want to invest in a better welding mask so you have both hands to steady yourself. Are you still running the factory rear end?
@MG-Driver6 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Michael thanks for the comments, I have a proper welding mask now and a much better welder. The rear end is running a copy of the classic conversions coil over shock setup.

I think NM was asking about the differential not your suspension.
@MG-Driver5 жыл бұрын
Merlin Emryys ah, in that case yes it’s the standard diff. For now.... when the new engine goes in I’d like an ATB diff from quaife.

It would have been better to hear the sound of the engine without the music. At least in some parts of the video. Great build though.

Just my two cents but I would have much rather listened to the sound of the engine then listen to the music.

Did you consider using the compact, lightweight 1970's Borg Warner T50 all aluminum 5-speed transmission used for 4-bangers and V6's? The oval shaped case is quite small... www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachments/duketrans3-jpg.125387
@MG-Driver7 жыл бұрын
BuzzLOLOL no but I would have preferred it. its a hard to find gearbox over here and even when you do find one quite expensive.

Sorry mate I'm slightly baffled... Standard 4 speed box bolts straight onto a duratec engine?? Forgive me for my stupidity but is that supposed to happen? lol. Thanks in advance!

@Stag29978 жыл бұрын
Very nice! How much power did you get out the Duratec? Is that on Bike carb or are they Bike Throttle bodies?
@MG-Driver8 жыл бұрын
hiya, it made 175bhp and 176lbs/ft. It uses motorcycle throttle bodies from a suzuki gsxr 600. quite small throttle bodies but they gave great torque.

what transmission are you using and with what kind of bell housing adapter? good build man!
@MG-Driver7 жыл бұрын
Eric Bardin it's a Ford type 9 gearbox with duratec to type 9 bell housing. got it from raceline but rally design also do them.
@ebardin45567 жыл бұрын

Roy yeah if I ever do another I’ll take the music away when engine revving away. It was tuned by Dave walker at emerald. He knows his stuff.

I’ve spent a lifetime welding, and unless you have no other option, stick welding is not the best route for automotive work, a reasonably priced MIG set will give you the flexibility to weld very thin and thicker material, good luck. Stevie cuz.
@MG-Driver3 жыл бұрын
I agree! I hate stick welding and only did it because I had no other option. I now have a mig welder and it's much easier to use.

All very well, but now you do not have an MG !!! You also devalued your asset !! NOT A SMART MOVE !! The gearbox will keep failing as it was NEVER designed to cope with the loads you are applying. Then the diff will fail for the same reasons, then the body........ and the story will go on and on and on and.................................... THEN you will be sad and miss your MG that you once had !! It is what it is and be happy with that !
@MG-Driver7 ай бұрын
Couldn't be further from the truth. The gearbox can handle 250bhp as I upgraded the bearings and lubrication. I don't care about the value of the car as I'll never sell it, I've had it over 20 years. The diff will not fail as it is the same diff used in the V8 models which have more torque. Also it has a limited slip differential. My car currently has 230bhp and has not broken down at all even though I drive it hard. Build it right, build it once.
