MGB Rear Axle Rebuild, Modifications and a QUAIFE LSD Setup!!

This video shows my axle as it gets an upgrade in the form of a Quaife ATB LSD. I have other mods on the axle for my 4 link coilover conversion and rear disc brakes.
I had an issue with the diff, in that there was a manufacturing defect, but Quaife sorted it out for me under warranty. An LSD takes a lot of time and effort to set up (one reason for why its a long video), so if you don't feel comfortable doing it, get a professional to help. I did not change the pinion bearings as they were fine (no noise or play and no oil leaks). The axle was in good condition to begin with which obviously helps a great deal.
The audio is quite poor in places as I do not have a decent mic so my apologies, this is just a rough guide on how I set up my axle with a Quaife LSD.

I've re-built 2-300 hundred of these axles and fitted 3.07 .1 CWP /quaife diffs between 1978-1995 and to correctly set up the backlash the spacers come in several sizes some I used to have ground to certain sizes .but always used a axle stretcher to fit the diff back in as the two taper bearings require a certain amount of pre-load for them to fit correctly.If you go to the trouble of fitting new bearings and a Quaife I would have swapped out the bearings on the pinion too.

That wheel bearing that was loose on the shaft - secure with Loctite Bearing Retainer.

This is the best illustration of a rear axle build thank you for the time to post this. Is the procedure the same to just replace the crown and pinion from a standard 3.09 to a 3.07 to suit a rover V8, can a novice do this work with the right measurements or is it more for a specialist ?

Great video. Do you have any more info on the rear disc conversion please? Esp the bracket. and did not quite hear what the rear discs are - Volvo V40 1998 ????? discs?

Are there any brass/bronze bits inside? Have some Mitsu MTF 75-85 I was going to use to drain/refill

I believe the quaife does not have any bronze or brass. I was told I could use standard diff oil.

What did you use for the rear disc conversion? I use Fiesta solid discs with mk5 RS2000 rear calipers.

Volvo V40 discs and mgf calipers

Please don't hit the bearing with a hammer (30:20) - you should never hit two hardened surfaces together as they can easily fracture - use a copper or hide hammer.

Or place a piece of wood inbetween 😁
