Turning Nematodes into Hydroponic Pumpkins using Dr. Kratky's method

For the first time, I'm dealing with root knot nematodes. They pretty much wiped out the tomatoes in our small greenhouse. I've done a soil drench with Azagard to get rid of them. In the meantime, let's try something new...growing hydroponic pumpkins using Dr. Kratky's method...just set it and forget. It's still early, but things look promising.

I'm glad you two are back!! Many years ago you motivated me to start some gardening and your lovely wife, though you guys weren't together yet, motivated me to learn to can. We haven't done much gardening but I found a local wholesale produce auction(Amish country,York PA) and we do a lot of canning. I have been wanting to put up a greenhouse and start a hydroponic garden. Keep up the great work and hopefully I will be motivated by you to get things going next year.

Thank you for posting another hydroponic video! I started learning about hydroponic gardening with your videos. I use your Masterblend based three part dry mix for nutrients. I add the three part mix to reverse osmosis water that is cleaned up to 8 PPM. I then set the ph to 6. It helps to heat a glass of water in the microwave oven, and dissolve the calcium nitrate with hot water. The Kratky hydroponic method works. But adding air to the nutrient improves the growth performance. Maybe you could do a video to compare the results with and without adding air stones and an air pump. I think you’d be impressed with the growth performance increase you get when you add air to the hydroponic nutrient. I’ve been waiting for a long time, hoping that you’d start creating videos again. Thanks again for your videos!

Food Grade Diatomaceous earth (DE) will eliminate spider mites. I don't remember if you tried DE or not. I found the best way to apply DE is with a fine strainer, shaking it back and forth applying a very fine layer of DE on the leaves and around the base of the plant on the soil. Warning: DE is harmless, but don't breathe DE for it will hurt your lungs.

Are you considering using nematicides? Non fumigant products like Nimitz, Velum and Vydate can be drenched through the drip while products like Majestene, Dazitol and Nemakill are good biological options! Certain cover crops work really good at reducing populations, could be a good option around your totes. A nematologist glad to help if needed!

I'm using Azagard in a soil drench. I did a second application today by spraying the surface thoroughly, tilling it in with the roto tiller, then flooding the entire greenhouse. The hard part about this is the fact that I have no idea if it works until I put some plants into the ground next Spring. Bobby

Root knot nematodes is the reason why I moved out of Florida. It's responsible for the biggest lost of crop than any other factors. There is no effective way I know of to remove them except to conjure snow to freeze the soil. All the other methods are just deterrents with minimal effectiveness. I'll be interested to see if the product you bought will help.
@mhpgardener
@mhpgardener 5 жыл бұрын
We had a very mild winter, which meant soil temps in the greenhouse probably were not low enough to kill off any nematodes that may have been present or leftover from last year. Plus, I left some tomatoes and peppers in the ground thru the winter, rather than removing them at the end of the season. I won't make that mistake again. I did another Azagard spraying today, then tilled it in before flooding the entire greenhouse. I think that will do the trick. Bobby

You can make a little brew to kill off harmful pathogens, they’re smaller so they can be knocked off without harming larger beneficial microbes. Mash some ginger or garlic cloves, mix in equal amount of brown sugar real good, and add enough water that barely covers the materials. Stir every day for 4-5 days, and then you’ve got yourself a great antibacterial nutrient.
