Ed and Al were very wrong to have treated him the way they did. All three of them, Dave, Ed, Al, ganged up on Mike publicly and humiliated him numerous times. Much of what we have learned about them has soiled the memory of a great band for me. No one is perfect, but some of it was total BS.

You don’t understand how music royalties work. Mike was given equal songwriting royalties on the first six albums even though, according to Sammy’s book, Mike has never written anything. That amounted to many millions of dollars that Mike made in Van Halen that he wouldn’t have gotten in almost any other band. Mike didn’t get screwed, they just stopped giving him more than he earned. If he played bass for The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, or just about any other band, he wouldn’t have gotten those royalties in the first place.

Here is your answer: Many have forgotten or never knew that Al had to insist that Ed stop singing lead. Ed thought he was a better singer than he actually was. "How many say I" proves this. And then, because Dave would so often not sing lyrics live, Ed and Mike would cover and Ed thought he was still kind of a lead singer. Then all the praise for Mike's singing began. He got most of the credit for backing harmonies. This built up in Ed and he became very angry about it, but couldn't say so publicly or he'd look like a dick. Dave, Ed, and AL ganged up on Mike and publicly humiliated him numerous times. The sad fact is that Ed and Mike's voices blended amazingly well and VH's backing vocals were special because of this. But Mike got the credit because of his amazing high parts, and he really was a better vocalist. They were all millionaires living amazing lives, but it wasn't enough for Ed, and Al and Dave. Dicks. But at least we have the music and our memories.

@@justme7185 Interesting. Still doesn't mean Al should get an even cut, but family first I guess? Watching live footage there's a good amount of songs where only MA is singing with Dave & Hagar. Ed was a horrible lead singer, but sounded good with Mike. Something pissed EVH off enough to cut MA from the band name and then that BS of putting Wolfie on the re-issued VH1 album cover. That's a John Holmes dick sized move, imo.

@@justme7185that’s a nice made up story but totally false, a lot of the resentment towards Mike was because the brothers looked at it like he chose Sammy over them AND Mike was actually given an ultimatum to either not due The Other Half tour thing with Sammy or he was out! so there are 2 sides to every story and although Mike is a great guy and super nice to all fans I understand why things got the way they did. And people who saw every tour of VH were happy to get the 2012 and 2015 final tours with Dave because Ed wanted to play again with his son in the band so i’m thankful for those shows and seeing the incredible setlist they have played so well and Ed was clean and played masterful again. I’ve seen every tour they did from 1984 on and like both eras but it was great to see the original catalogue played again instead of just a few of the hits from then with Sammy.

Look, EVH was a tortured genius who spent many of his productive years in a drug and alcohol filled haze. I’d expect his memory to have been sketchy. And you can easily flip the argument and say Mike’s vocals helped create the signature VH sound and helped earn them all millions. When I said “high road,” EVH slammed Anthony to the press. Pretty classless. Mike, who was a founding member of VH, didn’t reciprocate.

I grew up with VH in the 80’s. I don’t know what it is with Eddie. He had no reason to be at odds with MA about anything. I don’t get it. VH is just a 4 piece band. MA to me is very much apart of the VH brand.

VH wouldn’t have been as great without MA’s back up vocals. They’re unique and really added to each song. He may not have written the music or lyrics, but his back up vocals made the band, IMO.
