In the 1942 Pacific theatre of World War II, Lieutenant Junior Grade Sam Lawson, USN, (Cliff Robertson) is a Japanese-language interpreter who has avoided combat. His commanding officer, Captain John G. Nolan (Henry Fonda), cancels Lawson's leave and assigns him to a combat mission with the British infantry commando unit in the New Hebrides Islands. The British base is at the edge of the jungle, and on the other side of the jungle is a Japanese observation and communications post.
Lawson arrives at the base, a patrol of British soldiers sprint out of the jungle and across the open field, pursued by the Japanese. The base commander, Colonel Thompson (Harry Andrews), instructs his men to keep out of enemy range, and watch the patrol get cut down by Japanese rifle fire.
Lawson's commando group is instructed to destroy the Japanese radio transmitter to prevent them from sounding the alarm, warning about an American naval convoy which is scheduled to appear on the horizon in three days.
The commando group is led by Captain Hornsby (Denholm Elliott), an upper class officer with a history of foolhardiness. The other members of the squad are draftees from Singapore whose enthusiasm for fighting leaves something to be desired: Private Tosh Hearne (Michael Caine), a cynical Cockney who is also the squad's medic; Private Jock Thornton (Ian Bannen), a lean Scot; Private Campbell (Ronald Fraser) a fat Glaswegian; grey-haired Sergeant Johnstone (Percy Herbert); Signalman Scott (Harvey Jason) the radio operator; Private Griffiths (Martin Horsey); Private Rogers (Sean MacDuff); Privat. Currie (William Beckley); Private Connolly (Don Knight): Corporal McLean (Lance Percival); and Private Riddle (Roger Newman).
The squad reaches the Japanese post. Riddle, Connolly, and Currie are killed in a botched ambush. Johnstone is wounded in another encounter, and Hornsby leaves him behind, to be discovered by the Japanese, who slit his throat.
Scott drops the radio, and Hornsby decides to use the Japanese radio, walks boldly into the Japanese camp and enters the radio hut. He knocks out the radio operator and Scott goes to the hut, but Lawson refuses to go. After the Japanese radio operator comes to, both Scott and Hornsby are killed.
Lawson is now the ranking officer, with only Hearne, Campbell, Jock, Griffiths, and McLean left alive, and Jock's been wounded. Japanese Major Yamaguchi is determined to stop them from reporting the existence of the secret Japanese airfield and planes they have discovered. Through loudspeakers in the trees, Yamaguchi exhorts the men to give themselves up. Lawson and Hearne agree that Yamaguchi (Ken Takakura) is not to be trusted, but Campbell is in favor of surrender, and he works at Griffiths as Jock weakens. Finally, while Lawson and Hearne are asleep, Campbell tries to sneak off into the jungle; but Jock spots him and asks where he is going. Campbell strangles Jock, wakes Griffiths and McLean, and the three of them run off.
Yamaguchi attempts to use the lives of Griffiths and McLean as bargaining chips. Campbell is killed in gruesome fashion after the Japanese discover he has a ring taken from the finger of one of the officers the patrol ambushed.) As Lawson and Hearne reach the edge of the open field adjacent to the British base, Yamaguchi announces that they have three minutes to surrender; Japanese soldiers have the field covered with rifles and machine guns. Hearne suggests that they give Yamaguchi a taste of his own medicine. They double back and shoot him. They then sprint out across the field. Despite cover fire from the base, first one, then the other is hit.
One of them rises and staggers to safety. It is Hearne. When Colonel Thompson asks who the other man was, Hearne replies, "A hero. He killed fifteen Japs single-handed. Thirty, if you like."
A 1970 American war film produced & directed by Robert Aldrich, screenplay by Aldrich & Lukas Heller, from a story by Aldrich & Robert Sherman, cinematography by Joseph Biroc, starring Michael Caine, Cliff Robertson, Ian Bannen, Harry Andrews, Ken Takakura, and Henry Fonda. During filming, Robertson found out he won the Best Actor Oscar for "Charly" (1968). Frank Sinatra accepted it for him.
Aldrich wrote the story in 1959 with Robert Sherman. Aldrich wrote the first draft then had it rewritten by Lukas Heller. However the film was not made until after Aldrich had a big success with "The Dirty Dozen" (1967).
ABC Films, wanted another version of Aldrich's "The Dirty Dozen" and this was a property that had some of the same elements, and had been languishing in studio drawers. The idea of the film came from an unpublished novel called "Don't Die Mad" by Robert Sherman who had worked on several films with Aldrich.
In actuality, the Japanese never were in the New Hebrides in World War II. The American forces arrived in May 1942.
Although set during World War II, this is a deliberate allegory of the war that was raging in Vietnam at the time.

I thought this was a great movie - I’ve been watching a bunch of old war movies (my favourite genre) and I really enjoyed the darker themes in this film. It portrays the duality these soldiers lived on a daily basis - the desire to survive, to defend your friends, to do the right thing, to survive, and the back and forth of fear and suspicion vs trusting your fellow soldiers. No one is fully equipped to deal with the terrifying realities of war and this movie really paints the chaos of split decision life and death scenarios that real and flawed human beings had to face. I highly recommend it!!! 👍👍

Michael Caine, the great actor of so many unforgettable roles was again in this movie, remarkable. His style and presence lets the viewers wonder what he will do next. He has some of the characteristics as actor Steve McQueen , they both have similar qualities that grip an audience into the story. The cast of this film, especially Cliff Robertson makes this a must watch.

Remember watching this with my Dad as a kid I’m 60 now and it brings back memories of a kinder more innocent time in history. How life has changed I went on to see conflicts in 3 different war zones where cruelty was everywhere and soldiers were not the brave men shown in movies. I used to think of watching this movie when fear was all around me it gave me strength. I hate conflict now and Ukrainian sickens my heart.

We call our preachers workers. We have both brother workers and sister workers. Our workers go out 2 and 2, just as Jesus sent out his apostles. Therefore, we probably had about 15 or 20 over there who were sent home. A couple of our sister workers we arrested and held for a short time but soon released. Some of our workers stayed over there with the Ukrainians. One of our sister workers was sent to Rome because she spoke 5 different languages and Italian is one of them.

So much better than most movies of it's type and era, ages extremely well due to the realism of the characters, as opposed to most war movies where each is a 2 dimensional stereo/archetype. BE someone worthwhile! give YOUR best! i was born near the end of this war & the hard times lingered long for our large family & many other smaller ones. we moved waaay out into the back hills & mostly lived off the land. my gosh, i can't begin to imagine how bad it was during & after the 1st World War! especially in the cities where there wasn't much land to live off & always someone to steal what ppl may have planted in their yards..... even now that is happening & the worst hasn't yet come along.

One of our friends was a CO during the Vietnam 🇻🇳 war. He joined the war but wouldn’t carry a gun. He was a medic, which actually was more dangerous than as if he had carried a gun. The medics wore special clothing and weren’t supposed to be fired on. However, sometimes that didn’t help and they were shot at anyway. When our friend got back he became one of our preachers and he’s still preaching. He was raised on a ranch so he knew all about riding and shooting. They always had some deer 🦌 meat 🥩 to eat. When he got back, he would never talk about the horrible things that he had seen. The terrible injuries that he had to fix up. However, I’m sure that it would have been harder for him to see the ones who were so badly wounded that there was nothing he could do to save their lives. However, now he’s preaching the gospel and saving lives a different way. With love ❤️.

Never thought I'd be watching this again after more than 50 years! I actually thought it was earlier -'68 or '69, so am now a little confused about where I saw it! What I do remember is the intense colour, particularly the deep jungle greens and the jarring contrast they made with the drier, yellower, portions amid the ruins and airfield. This colour intensity unfortunately has been lost in this particular upload. It would be great to see a restored version on BluRay. I had forgotten the title of the film also, which made online searches near impossible, so this really was a stroke of luck! Many thanks for sharing this upload.

I was in this movie when the USS Coral Sea pulled into Olongapo for provisions in early 1969 and they needed extras. We were a bunch of sailors cheering on the two actors in that running scene at the end of the movie. We returned home from Vietnam in 1969. BTW, the village set burned down after that scene, and we turned into fire fighters.

❤'d the film & the 2 main actors (Michael Caine & Cliff Robertson). As an X 95Bravo 10 (U.S. Army Military Police) I could relate to what they went through but I'm glad I never had to do anything like that. I'd have probably come back pretty messed up in the head if I had survived. Of course anything with Caine in it I'm going to Luv... no matter how good or bad. Loved him in Zulu, The Valley, Jigsaw, Eagle Has Landed, Fourth Protocol, one where he's older as a spy in St. Petersburg Roo-Land, Tinker Tailor Spy & in the last one were he gets his head blown up as the bad guy in 'Kingsmen'. Too many to name lol. ThnX 4-Upldng, always interested in war movies (all the way back to Crusaders and 900 A.D, 1200's, 1800's, 1920's --> 1990's). Have a nice safe day. 🌹

Good action flick sheer fantasy of course the plot of this movie shows how inept the writers were in military tactics no way would anyone consider sending such a small group on a mission such as this and to yomp the length of a jungle island infested with the enemy where the obvious choice would be to land a commando unit from the sea....Still a good boys own tale of daring do.

At 1:16:00 we get to see the 'secret Japanese fighters' - which are a pair of JASDF T-28A Trojans, and a real-world JASDF aircraft - a Fujii T-3 (licence-built Beechcraft T-34 Mentor). An interesting point of history - the T-28, though a post-war trainer, actually had better performance and firepower potential than the wartime P-51D Mustang !

This is a movie that requires your complete undivided attention from the opening scenes. Whether military or civilian, you can appreciate the jerky way they drive their jeeps to the way they light their cigarettes with a Zippo lighter, to the firm"orders are orders', common to the military. there's definitely some humor in the way the unproven Lieutenant handles his new assignment.

If Lawson's only job was to broadcast a SitRep in Japanese on a British radio set, then there was no need at all for him to go on the raiding patrol: he could simply have stayed in the British base and sent the message once the patrol confirmed [or otherwie] the destruction of the Japanese' equipment... Also, why aren't the gunpits at the British base permanently manned? They know the Japanese are 'out there' and could come any time.
