Actor Michael J. Fox has projected hope and optimism for nearly 30 years since he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at age 29. In this week’s Sunday Sitdown, he shares a story from his new book, “No Time Like the Future,” about hitting a breaking point but reminding himself about what he’s grateful for in life. “Optimism is a choice, but in a way, it isn't,” he says. “There's no other choice. I don't think there's any other viable choice than to hope for the best and work toward it.”

Looks like he's doing alright, he actually speaks better than the last interview I saw him with. He seems to have learned to live with his condition and make the most out of it. That deserves respect.

Parkinson's changes daily. Somedays you are able to move better than other days. Sometimes your meds have kicked in and sometimes they haven't yet. I have the disease as well. In this particular interview he was probably just having a "good" day.
@triarb5790
@triarb5790 3 жыл бұрын
@@chasingbirds3073Yes, he has spoken about this too. He has said that he worries that when he is interviewed he can come across as not sick, which is misleading because we are not seeing just how bad he gets. Yet at the same time he doesn't want the public to see just how bad he can get. I have a friend with Parkinson's who told me early on that I would only see her when she is well. Sometimes that means not seing her many months. She has chosen that she only wants to be known that way.

Credit to the interviewer for the tremendous amount of respect he showed Michael. Opening up to Michael and sharing with him how his own father had Parkinson’s. Then referencing the part in the book where Michael told his wife he had it. Then pausing for a moment to let Michael reflect, and stating that a partner is what helps you get through it. I have a lot of respect for both of these guys. That’s how you do a interview, major props.

Yeah. It’s overwhelming when you think that person(s) who stands by you even when you’re at your lowest. When they cheer you on as you keep fighting, and console when the tears won’t stop falling. When they look you dead in your eyes, and tell you that they are not going anywhere just before they pull you up off the ground. The happiness, and humility is enough stop you from breathing momentarily (in a good way lol). Honestly I thought he passed on, but I was very happy to see that he is alive, well, and still climbing those incredibly tough walls one step at a time.

@Fultoncards 2 жыл бұрын
Not everyone has the ability to choose optimism. If you have acute mental illness, or you do chronic harm to yourself, it's very hard to listen to ppl who proselytize about optimism. Some ppl are resigned or accepting of the fact that they do not always have much choice, if any at all. Optimism then sounds pat and glib, by others who confuse sympathy for empathy. Especially when that person then dies young, no matter how many physicians she had seen.

Michael you are an inspiration to every one with disabilities. I am a bilateral amputee from am industrial accident in 2008. I was 52 years old. Many times thought my life was over, but with the support of my loving wife Lynn and daughter Renee, friends, community I learned to live again. Learning to walk was tough, driving was tough but hilarious. You could have done a show on that one. You are one of my inspirations. Most people never know the true inner struggles a disabled person lives with every minute of every day. To find the silver lining is difficult but it can be done and you have shown the way for so many. Finally Mr. Fox I really enjoyed you in the sitcom but not so much in back to the future. Just kidding you are a pretty good actor, but a truely inspirational man. I am now 66 years old and still fighting every day. Thank You Sir. from a humble fan, sincerely Bob Simon.

MJF is awesome! Loved the roles he played that made up my childhood. My mom is also battling with Parkison, so I can empathize with his situation. It's a daily struggle, so for him to keep his head up high like that has earned even more respect from me. Keep going MJF!

Bless you MJF. My highest respect and honor for his wife, Tracy. I have fond memories of Family Ties which was one of my favorite tv shows when I was growing up. This Parkinson's reminded me of my mother who passed away in 2011. She battled with Parkinson's for many years. May God bless The Michael J. Fox Foundation

Always will be one of my favorite people! Michael J. Fox is so much more than just the fame. I’m so glad he’s brave enough to share his whole story with us! I read his other book and now I must get this one! Perseverance! He’s an amazing human! And the unconditional love of his family! That’s inspirational! 👏🏻❤️❤️👌🏻🙏🏻💪🏼

@@robf6105 I’ve only read his first! I need the others! I remember we read it years ago. My oldest daughter saw a few cuss words and was shocked! Hahaha it wasn’t full of them! But I remember laughing because she saw him as Marty and not a normal adult man with a lot of talent! LOL I think she began to understand then that everyone no matter what profession in life or their status, life can be a challenge! Money and fame do not mean only good things happen and they’re always trouble free with no pain or sorrow. To me there are few actors who can get through unscathed by the price of fame! He’s a man I’d want to be friends with even if he wasn’t a famous person! Thanks for the suggestion! We need books like this today!! Empathy is disappearing and fear seems more the topic these days!

The amazing thing about Michael J. Fox is that he is such a well spoken man and he can have me so emotional and crying, then the next moment, he has me laughing out loud so hard! It’s wonderful to know through everything he has gone through and all the struggles, he has come back stronger and more incredible of a man than I think any of us could have expected from him. I love that he is still the same Michael J. Fox that we’ve all loved and adored for decades. God Bless Michael forever❤️

Michael J Fox reminds us all that we often mask a lot of our challenges in front of others, only to show strength and perseverance. No one had a clue what he was dealing with all those year. He's inspirational on all levels and a reminder to us all that we need to show more compassion and encouragement to one another. A great dude, a true fighter! I hope we can one day fight and conquer this disease!

I remember hearing his diagnosis, hearing of Parkinson’s for the first time, not knowing what it was, I had to be around 3, but I remember 💔
