His vocal teacher admitted that MJ had a deep baritone voice. He felt better (safer if you ask me) when he was talking/singing in a higher voice. Regardless, he has probably the most controlled voice I've ever heard and a 4 octaves range. Phenomenon!

The fanboys are of course insisting this is his original voice & "MJ would never do such a thing as pitch shift!!!!!" but it's a well known technique & he used it often, also in the BAD album several tracks were shifted upwards to make them more punchy & fit on vinyl.

He pitched the whole song down. That's why it sounds covered. I did that with my voice once to compare it to normal singing, it sounds very different when you pitch down.

@@DaRunningMan Yes, Michael spoke in a higher pitch in his personal life than how he would in public, as do most people. However, the vocal in this song is pitched down. When you pitch vocals up or down they leave audible artefacts as you're pitching every single harmonic, which isn't how the human voice operates when singing lower. The artefacts from such a process are present in this song.

I was a kid in middle school when this album came out. We all had this album on in the computer class. Many thought it was lit. I was one of them. The album didn't get the promotion it needed. His previous work was also so solid we over looked that he changed a lot since Off The Wall and Thriller. He left too soon and many secrets go with him. That was the magic of MJ
