@jett woodward yea he did start wearing the shades allll the time from like 1984-87.. he has said before he wears them because he doesn't want people to see the sadness in his soul. A lot of people think he was so sad at the time because of the abuse he endured as a child but I also wonder if it was because in 1984 he was diagnosed with vitiligo and even though it didn't start showing until late 80's, can you imagine what that would do to your self esteem? I always thought maybe that's why he wore the shades, because he was so depressed over getting diagnosed with that, or atleast a little part of why he wore them.

He couldn't even do "BEN" with justice, then what kind of singer is Barry Manilow? Diana Ross, Tom Jones, or Barbra Streisand at the height of their careers could have knocked it out of the park. BEN is a gorgeous ballad. Barry is just a sorry ass singer with very limited talent--- with his monotone, 1 octave singin' azz. Even as a kid Michael sounded far better singing this song than Barry as a grown adult.

I watched this in real time back in January of 1984. I recall it was an emotional evening. Michael was appearing for the Awards special which he was expected to win profusely. When Mr. Manilow did the tribute for him,he most likely just listened respectfully. You have to understand. Michael was somehow looked like a flash in the pan for most of them back in the day before the vortex of Thriller . People Barry Manilow singing to him. He would probabaly appreciate it more if Stevie Wonder did that or Diana Ross. Just saying. Although he probably appreciated it.

I'm a die hard fan of Michael Jackson. And i'm pretty sure if at least he was a professional singer just like him. The public reaction would be very different. Not only in tune and using vibrato. Michael Jackson songs always had that special ingredient: PASSION. And his Vocals were Almost Perfect.

Poor Barry...he was so nervous and excited. I know this broke his heart. It's not his fault...the producers of the AMAs hired Barry to do what Barry does...sing sentimental, at times cheesy, songs that he wrote and remakes of other songs. MJ was extremely competitive by nature, and Barry was extremely popular at that point. He had a legendarily great voice, and was a good songwriter. It was how he was trained to think. I think MJ was more pissed at the producers rather than Barry.

This is being seen through the eyes of people who weren't even born then and don't have the same values as us. They all assume that Michael was insulted and bored because they are used to seeing over the top reaction. Michael looked very humbled by the performance, he looked like he was very grateful but embarrassed about the adoration being given to him.
