Nascar died when it turned its back on the fans that made them in the first place. It used to be about pure racing. Now it's a "Competition" reality show. Part glitz and glamor, part soap opera. It's all about "Entertainment" and less about racing. Yup, the brain died a long time ago, now the body is catching up to it.

If the fans can’t relate, then they will slowly leave. I believe NHRA is in a similar boat too. Street Outlaws blew up with something the average racer could try and participate in too. Even though they have a big following, the smaller venues are what helps keep them going as their cars get farther and farther away from the average racer. More and more younger people. And even middle aged and not interested in watching cars “drive in circles” for several hours like in the past. They need to figure something out and quick to get it going. Hopefully they did with the new TV deal.

@hawkgeoff sure, but the 36 teams that do this week in and week out post faster speeds than the open cars like 98% of the time anyways. You're really just whining about a couple of times a year that an open car gets the short end of the sick at most, and they are usually unsponsored. That would have almost no effect on most race weekends at all so it's not even worth changing anything. There is no up side. On the other hand, having a guaranteed spot is important to attracting the sponsors. Before the charters, they still basically had guaranteed spots to the top 36 in points and then provusionals even. At your local short track, you can do whatever you want, but this is the big money top tier with real corporate sponsors on a globally watched platform.

Imagine if charters were a thing in the 70s, 80s, and 90s? No Earnhardt, Petty, Junior Johnson, Pearson, RCR, HMS, Roush, Penske. None of that would exist, now take that and put it towards today and imagine what we've lost cause of Charters, Dale Jr., and Jr Motorsport being the biggest. With that said, Nascar did say, "We're gonna change 75 years of history and tradition, and We're gonna do it." The days of build it and race it are long gone.

Let what you said sink in with MJ wanting the charter! The charter is one of many things that’s hurt the series! HMS was a team that made money before the charter system! RCR went from a small shop with hardly no employees when Richard drove to a top tier powerhouse with state of the art facilities by the time Dale won his 7th championship! Back in the 80’s-mid 2000’s Cup had different programs going to award money throughout the weekend & the race! You had money going to the top qualifying team! They used to have two rounds of qualifying, one on Friday & one on Saturday! The second day fastest got some money! I remember there was the goody’s headache award! The plasticoat award! The halfway award! The Gillette young guns award & many others! Even the crew chiefs had an award each race! The money from all these were split between the drivers/crew chiefs & team owners! Not only did the champion that year get millions but the team also won money for the championship as well! Then the other finishers got their share as they went down through the top 20! When nascar introduced the charter, I knew like millions of others that it would benefit only nascar itself! They control all funds now! The teams are going to have to do what was rumored & try their own thing! They were rumored to be setting up exhibition races at non nascar sanctioned tracks! They need to do that & get with Penske to form a stock car series through Indy car!

I'm glad MJ spoke up, we need people like him calling out Nascar. When big names speak out on the big issues people listen. In doing so it applies the pressure on Nascar to hopefully find a sense of urgency on the major topics/issues. My problem has been with the segment type racing, the f1 type position terminology now and the efi tuning restrictions. If you’re going to segment up the race might as well come on back to the dirt track preliminaries and run 4 heats of 10 etc, efi restrictions ok yes give a spec engine parts list and fuel induction then let the teams have at it tuning wise(except superspeedways safety purposes). That’s going to throw a wrench in the pit stop window because different teams different tunes different fuel mileages. And please stop saying p7 p2 he’s in p11. lol jmo

I said the same thing about using the segments as heat races for the ‘feature’ race. Put a handful of cars out there for a given number of laps, and repeat. Do it right and maybe even able to throw in the trucks too so there is a little bit of time between the heats and the features with no dead time like local tracks do. Win win for sure I think.

Charters, stage racing, coliseum racing, and all the other stupid ideas have ruined it for fans that started watching before they started abandoning there core tracks and fan base. They think all this glitz and show will attract new fans, and it may for few races, then they get tired of the bs. Get rid of the charters, stage racing, let teams build cars to a rulebook, and if they are not fast enough to make a race then so be it. Back to what made NASCAR

I don't care for charters but if that is what is needed for success for the future of the sport I'm all for it. MJ could be correct but I would side with Kenny more just because he has been in the sport a long time. Business wise I agree with MJ though. I guess time will tell.

Charter good for guaranteeing a spot in the race. Charters bad for determining amount of purse earned. My solution. Make charters good for 10 years. Automatic loss of charter if finish 34-36 two years in a row. Automatic loss if finish 31-33 four years in a row. Publish total purse and payout for each race.

Spending limits by the teams needs to be a rule. Stop this out of control spending by the rich teams so the less funded teams can compete. Limit the number of employees is step one. RCR won championship with less than 30 employees. So did Junior Johnson and Associates , Petty Enterprises etc. Cut out the big jets etc. Bring the sport back to the average racer can show up and race. Small tracks and other forms Racing are doing just fine. Look at Bowman Gray.

So the sponsors want more power. I think that is what MJ is saying. He's a relative newcomer to the sport and he wants to make the rules. How about the teams run their own team. The sponsors run their ad campaign and Nascar makes the rules. This is a perfect example of the big sanctioning bodies selling out control to the sponsors. Why doesn't nascar do something for the fans. The sponsors are there for advertising. They are not supposed to control the sport. The sponsors should have no say in the rules. If you want to know why you're losing fans, here it is.

Jeff Gordon said he doesn’t know of any team that has made a profit the past several years. If the current trend keeps up, there will be less cars on the track. Less cars, less sponsors, less fans - then the tracks start losing money, and you have less events on the schedule, causing even more loss of fans and sponsors, then less TV coverage - resulting in more loss of fans and sponsors. Until NASCAR starts feeling the pinch of their bad management, nothing will change, and likely by the time they do, it will be too late.

When I was a kid, the sport was called "Stock car racing", the cars were driven by former moonshine runners at funky tracks, and you could buy one of said cars or at least a close approximation at a dealer. Now it's NASCAR, the cars and most of the tracks look exactly the same, they're driven by former go-karters who live in lux motor homes and talk like corporate shills, and you can't afford the fake front bumper of one of these formula racing vehicles. It used to be a sport of the people, now it's just "product", and not a very good one.
