This was first song I ever remember remembering...lol...I was 5, my mom was pumping gas as the song played in the car...she got back in and was so worried because I was sitting in the seat bawling...she asked, "what's wrong?!" And I bellowed...."THE HORSE DIED" and proceeded to cry all the way home! I never had that kind of emotion to a song again, until, "Don't take the girl" years later.

This was a HUGE hit in the mid-70s when I was in my mid-teens , during my cowboy days. I even had horse named Wildfire! Michael had a few more hits like GERONIMO'S CADILLAC, CAROLINA IN THE PINES, WHAT'S FOREVER FOR. But in the 90s he returned to his first love, cowboy music, singing songs like THE STREETS OF LAREDO, I RIDE AN OLD PAINT, THE OLD CHISHOLM TRAIL, TYIN' KNOTS IN THE DEVIL'S TAIL. I sure do love his cowboy songs! And believe me when I tell you he looks totally different today. His hair is much shorter, he has a well-trimmed full beard and is usually wearing a cowboy hat and a wild rag around his neck.

You have to be kidding me.. right in my era.... 70's music (and 80's). I like another one called I Go Crazy by Paul Davis around the same time. I just found you after watching a collection of individuals reacting to Alan Jackson's "Remember When". I had a feeling about you and I was right. New sub here... going through your archives and Subscribed/notified for new.

MMM is still making music, he's been thru Rock, Country and lately Blue Grass. This was his only crossover hit to pop in 1975, that played on the radio for years. Check out the 1986 concert with the Rio Grand band. He explains the song and the piano intro and alto are more expressive.

There is a longer live version he did when he was older and another great version with Amy Grant.

I've been hearing this song since it came out (I was about 7), but never really listened to it until recently. It seems to me that all 3 pass away. She and Wildfire in the blizzard and he planted his crops, but an early snow killed them and the poor guy is starving. The hoot owl is a harbinger of a death in the house, superstitiously. On a brighter note he gets to leave the farming and ride off with her on Wildfire.

MMM is very well known and loved within the true Cowboy culture, as a poet and song writer, He has a few albums, including historic songs from the 1800's , authentic songs from Cowboy life from 1800's 30's , to present day. Real Cowboy folk songs are not Country/Western, A beautiful song he does was written by a working Cowboy Badger Clark ;around 1930, This song is known by every living working Cowboy today and MMM does a beautiful, classic rendention of it "Spanish Is a Lovin' Toung" If you go to a Cowboy gathering, and someone starts this song on stage, every Cowboy in the place will sing along. Check it out.

Yes, the horse Wildfire "busted down his stall, in a blizzard he was lost." And then she ran after him "calling Wildfire" So they both died in that blizzard. Then when the owl is outside his window (which in some native cultures is a symbol of death) HE knows that SHE and WILDFIRE are coming for him (when he dies) cos his crops froze in the snow, and he will ride with her on Wildfire....so the 3 are now ghosts.

You will love Michael Murphy's _"CAROLINA IN THE PINES"_ , he was a Nashville biggie with Wildfire & a couple of others..... friends & cowriters with Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg for the folksy-country stuff, also worked with old-Texas cowboy sound and some of Marty Robbins band. BIG FAVOR PLEASE, "BE THE REBEL", Not Follow Other Reactions....... Here are disco sound things, 1st: movie theme to "Mahogany", called *_"Do you know"_* by Diana Ross; 2nd: *_"DONT LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD"_* by group Santa Esmeralda (10:30 -ish, album cover of girl with rose is best version).....; a '90s "Miami Sound" of latin-dance club music by group *No Mercy* for songs *"Where Do You Go"* and *"Kiss You All Over"*

Wildfire and the girl died, becoming reprentarive of death. The farmers crop fails, signifying the impending doom of his livelihood. The owl outside the window is a harbinger of death in only Midwest superstition, or at least it was in my family. The protagonists is singing his death song and wildfire and the girl are now serving as a metaphor for Charon, ready to ferry the farmer across the river Styx.

This is one of those songs you could hear on both country and top 40 stations. While I didn't entirely steer you wrong on the singer's identity, I didn't know his last name was spelled "Murphey", though I know he had an album titled "Michael Martin Murphey", I'm guessing his full name.

If you're going down the country lane vibes....try Guy Clark song "True Love and Homegrown Tomatoes". John Denver covered that as well. There's a good YT video from Austin City Limits. Enjoy!
