I was praying this guy was going to be there for Seattle but I think Atlanta made a great move. You can trade Cousins easily for some help after this year if Penix starts showing out in practice. Cousins has a no-trade clause in the first 2 years of his Falcons contract, meaning Michael Penix will have to sit behind Cousins in his first 2 seasons in the NFL. No issue with Penix Jr, he could be good, and maybe better than Cousins. The issue is they have 100 million guaranteed to Cousins. I think it's a disrespectful move to Cousins, a confusing move to the rest of the team, and they don't have a Super Bowl roster so why they wouldn't get a top 10 D or Offensive talent outside of QB makes little sense. I think this is a dumb, disrespectful, and desperate move by the Falcons.

I read like 5 different videos and look like half of the comments hated and the other half loved. The most complaints I read is the amount of money Kirk was paid just to have another QB. Instead of looking for a defensive player. The ones that like the pick are saying is better to have a potential second option in case K.C. get hurt and if nothing happens then will be a solid future QB. I like the second opinion better, at the beginning of 2023 the defense show very good on the first few games but went bad as the offense didn't proof his value. Just saying 😅

Here's something you might want to consider. All of the success that Penix had in college came when he was being coached by Kalen DeBoer. Toss the true freshman 2018 season where he did mop up duty for a few passes & look only at his game from 2019-2023.Deboer coached him in 2019. He jumped to Fresno State in 2020. Penix was good in 2019 with DeBoer, but he was pretty average in 2020 & 2021 without him. Considering the fact that a QB should be getting better year by year in college but he got worse...that's a pretty significant red flag. His stat lines across the board dropped drastically for those 2 years. So he jumped through the portal in 2022 to Washington where Deboer had landed. Back with him, he was great. Why is this important? Because Kalen DeBoer is a true QB whisperer. He made some guy named Patrick Ramsey look like a possible NFL draft pick for a while before Penix arrived at Indiana. If you dig into his background, you'll be impressed with what QBs do with him. He's got Jalen Milroe next year at Alabama. I'll go ahead right now & predict that Milroe will win the Heisman & be a #1 draft pick. The question now is, can he do it in the NFL without DeBoer & without the spread offense he was in? Ironically, he might have landed in the best spot for him. He can sit for two years behind Cousins, & that is how long he probably needs to sit. He's not ready for the NFL now despite what a lot of people think. Meanwhile, the Falcons will need to find themselves a RT who is a great pass protector, and that definitely isn't Kaleb McGary. Penix' injury situation with the shoulder injures is the worrisome part. The ACL are not as much so but he had serious issues with his shoulder problems. If you can't keep this dude upright he could have a short NFl career.

@@armanr8641 Actually he is. But if you don't think DeBoer is capable of getting him into the Tua/Young category, I suggest you look at what he did with Penix at Indiana in 2019, then again at Oregon in 2022 & 2023. Milroe is already miles better than Penix was without DeBoer. But compare Penix season in 2019 with DeBoer to the 2020 & 2021 seasons without him. It's a huge drop off without him. Then when he goes to Oregon & has him again, his numbers skyrocketed. DeBoer might have the most QB friendly system in the country.Milroe put up very solid numbers last year which was his first a starter. He'll crush it with DeBoer, & he can use his legs too, something neither Penix nor Tua or Young could do. Don't be surprised if Milroe goes in the top 5 of the 2025 draft. He's fast & athletic, he's got a big time arm, he's built like a running back & he's got all the tools to put up huge numbers in a DeBoer offense.

2 HUGE things to think about before trashing this pick: 1) I'd like to throw in a wrinkle to this pick: -Falcons are banking on having winning season (meaning bottom of 1st round picks the upcoming seasons) and wouldn't get to draft another franchise QB from that spot unless they made a Trey Lance type of trade up - The Falcons are about to be hit hard with the rulebook and are going to have picks taken away bc of tampering, so I doubt they will be able to make that type of Trey Lance package of draft picks Just trying to reason the pick, if they really like the QB, it's not bad because I doubt they will have anyone after Cousins 2) Only 9/32 teams (28% has their QB play every game of the season...meaninf 72% of NFL teams were forced to use their backup at some point. Having a good backup QB isn't necessary a bad thing, and believing a 35-37 yeae old Kirko will play eveey game for the next 2 seasons is a far reach.

Quarterbacks are the most valuable commodity in today's NFL , plus Kirk Cousins is an older quarterback that's just come off a serious injury.. Penix is an insurance policy and worst case scenario could be a tradable asset since so many teams are starved for quarterbacks !

That Jordan Love pick is still stupid to this day even if he turns out to be a great qb (which it looks like he will). Aaron Rodgers and that packers team may have won a Super Bowl if they take a top WR or DB in that draft. That team was literally one piece away.

Normally I would agree that this pick is strange and unexpected. But Penix is the best thrower in this draft. It's not even close. And I believe the Falcons know already they are going to be docked next year's number 1 for tampering to get Cousins. So if you look at if from that perspective, they couldn't draft a first round QB again til 2026 and it would cost them a ton of additional draft capital to move up (Assuming Cousins plays well and they are fighting for playoffs each year). There was zero chance Penix was falling below the Raiders at 13, so to have waited would have netted them no chance to draft him. Course on the flip side, it is the Falcons and nothing much ever seems to work out for them.

I'm Redskins fan! Since Caleb was going #1 for 2 years now! I wanted the Skins to take MPJr., but the injuries early at IU and the West Coast bias that's always there! I knew they're taking JD's(who think will be good) because of how well he reads/processes from within the pocket. But I wanted MPJr., and I think he'll end up the best Qb from this in this draft! In saying that! Nobody, and I mean nobody just walks into this league and just dominates! The very best didn't and never have! Come in rookie year and win a Super Bowl, MVP, lead all passing statistics, best record, and I repeat win a championship! Peyton Manning(the mentally m9st prepared Qb going into any game struggled and took his lumps. Brady had even mote to prove! They all had adversity at some point in this league before the ascended! MPJr. fans??? Pump the breaks!

It’s a perfect pick. Kirk is under a two year guarantee deal and he’s a dog. Let Penix learn from Kirk and the Shannahan system and build his body so don’t have any injuries no time soon. Penix has flaws rn that can be fixed and develop. By year 2 he’s going to be a legit dog to be the future of the franchise. This is Kirk’s last contract so he’s giving these next two years his all and won’t mind riding off into retirement while helping Penix lead the falcons.

The idea is not to compete for 1-4 years optimistically, but to compete for years to come. This move could ensure they aren't also-rans for years like they have been. But I can absolutely understand the fans frustration of how does this help us win NOW. Because unless it lights a fire under Kirk, it doesn't next to some of the prospects they passed on.
