035: Author, holistic orchardist, and fungal network devotee Michael Phillips shares his thoughts on promoting outrageous biodiversity to restore degraded lands and letting every part of nature play its intended role.

The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince.
The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce. It also identifies pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs as compared to products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations).

We believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be. But the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing small farms that follow the law. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but are still paying a premium price. The lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront.
If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Fans!

Dear Tree Michael, knowing you are out there somewhere in what to some of us looks like a God-forsaken (am not religious, but can't think of a better word) country makes me smile. I wish you were my neighbour. Loving the you and the setting too 😊 Yeah 'trust your intuition' has been side-swiped by 'trust the science'. The first requires taking responsibility and tuning in with Nature who knows best (at which point one can but have full respect and be in awe), the second requires that you hand over responsibility and believe whatever it is they tell you (at which point ..........). What a lovely cider community idea... Talking about sulphur: most folks would use sulphur to deal with peach leaf curl. Imagine my delight when i used wormcast liquid instead and found that just two applications sorted the problem! 🙃 Yup: plant vitality is vital!!! Hands off plant vitality!!! Btw loving your earthy hands!!! - just like mine. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 🌳🕊💚

Great interview, I’m just starting to grow fruit trees and berry bushes. I just realized I purchased the wrong ingredients from a big box store, to give my yard a healthy start.

Terribly sad to hear Michael has died. This podcast was a total classic. I've come back here because he used a great Steiner quote - very smart man. I'm going to find a copy of the Mycorrhizal Planet book.

Loved the organic doctors idea. Look to the part of the Asia where people have used ancient herbal remedies and the fact that they seem to have better genetics in terms of not aging so rapidly. Consider that knowledge from these doctors put into practice might literally benefit their children and grandchildren because of the knowledge of their mistakes and the ability to physically change what they do from that day forward. It's said many diseases are hereditary. Far as that gifted portion goes 19:00, pretty sure God gave me some decent thoughts on why Christmas (evergreen) trees were considered something to have "gifts" (understory food crops) underneath their protective canopy. I think some traditions had a valid source or they'd never have been so widespread. The phrase "bull" and "bull's eye" also come to mind; one to stop someone in their tracks for safety's purpose; the other because if Native Americans were living on the plains, they might not have wanted that mass amount of buffalo that was around to be fully uncontrollable

Great video and getting ready to start my orchard in Maine. So I am listening to every word. I would like to know how much of pest and fungus on a tree is just taking care of the week point of that particular plant. Granted you don't want to lose a tree but a few week leaves or even a limb or two isn't a bad thing if it is for the betterment of the tree overall is it.

Is the word co- opertive a bad word now? If farmers cooperate big things could be done.
