Can you use this technique to do a tank in a very dusty environment. Rather than a white wash , could you use a dust coloured paint layer and reduce it with water to get a severe dust effect?
@danielwcheng6381 Жыл бұрын
I'm new to this chipping and weathering...in this video the hairspray is added after basecoat but before the white. shouldn't the hairspray be added after the white wash?

Quick question, is it safe to airbrush without a facemask? I'm tempted to but worried of the potential risks
@hishamaziz32826 жыл бұрын
So, if the top coat of paint is Tamiya thinned with their lacquer thinner.. will the paint not come off at all, or will it just be a little more difficult to scratch off? Thank you.

Do you do the hairspray technique before or after the decals?
@herrlogan174 жыл бұрын
Just a question please. I use base (Mr. surfacer), hairsprey and tamiya acrylic. And it takes a while the water makes it through to make chips. On top of it I cannot do it with a brush, more with some harder stuff, like tooth pick etc. Maybe I waited too long before the actual chipping?
@xNevikKx6 жыл бұрын
After much apprehension I went ahead and decided to douse my model in hairspray. First I used the B/W preshade technique, then base coated with thin lightend layers of Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow until just enough of the preshade showed through. Then I applied the hairspray as suggested, lite thin coats arms length. I was really happy with the model up to this point, but got discouraged after applying the camo pattern in XF-71 Cockpit Green. It definitely had...the 'crew painted look'. But man after starting work on the chipping everything took on a whole new realistic dimension that I've never been able to achieve before, even with the unartistic camo. I think the bad camo might have actually helped when coupled with HS chipping! A soft brush took the camo off in very controllable amounts, changing the gradient halos around all the camo patterns into nice subtle chips and making raised detail look worn. I used a tooth pick for scratches. This is in 1/48th by the way...a Tiger. Also, any minor rough spots in the base coating got smoothed after the chipping was done! I was worried the HS would leave too much sheen, but that's not an issue when everything's finished. Thanks for the videos, and the knowledge! Right out of the gate with no practice this worked for me!

So we can put down tamiya XF paint over tamiya XF paint?? And chipped it with water?? I didn’t understand what he was talking about with water and tamiya paint. TIA
@xsamitt Жыл бұрын
@@jaimeleyva3745 Good point...anyone ?
@cfranko1860 Жыл бұрын
@@jaimeleyva3745he was talking about how if you were to spray the top coat (in this case the white) with Tamiya paint thinned with lacquer thinner, the paint would be too hard to remove again with the brush and water. If you thin Tamiya paints with water, they hold weaker, and can be chipped off easier

Is there a Matte Varnish on that tank? I’m still having problems with the paint just sliding off and not chipping..
@taco66583 жыл бұрын
I have a question. I’ve been working on a panzer 2 and airbrushed it a few days ago and did the hairspray too. When I went to chip at it the paint wasn’t chipping and when it did chip it went through my color underneath the hairspray. How do I fix that?
@stevejones90447 жыл бұрын
I can never get the chips to form without a stiff toothbrush. I do use lacquer thinned Tamiya paints so your comments regarding thinning with water makes sense. Also love your TA 1 book Michael!
@rs.p6 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, yes the thinner will make a difference in how strong the bond will be with the top layer of paint. Typically, the weaker the thinner choice (ie water vs lacquer thinner) the more controllable. Thanks!

Finally see the techniques in sm.03 in action thumbs up! Im just curious, isnt airbrushing without a mask bad?
@ottonichols34335 жыл бұрын
Not with these acrylics. Normally you only have to worry about chems with laquers or heavy solvents. However any particles that are foreign are not good to breathe in, toxic or not. So yes, it is wise to at least run some kind of ventilation or wear a light mask if you are really concerned.

QUESTION I am using enamel paint since acrylics seem not to stick to the plastic of my model kits. Using enamel paints for the silver base coating and later for the camouflage, how would the hairspray method be done in this case?

Only thing I am confused about. With the MMP products do you add the poly additive for your top coat that you will chip away? Or just use the paint and thinner option without the poly?

I know Steve Plaffy he's been using the hairspray technique for over 30 years he's got loads in Tamiyas HQ most model companies use his photos for there own photo sources he was saying to me last week when I was speaking to him he doesn't use the hairspray or chipping fluids these days as he discovered they never settle and he wants to keep his model's forever and these products either turn bad or reactivate through time! I now know what he means as I used AKs worn effects alot but I'm on my 4th new bottle as they do not keep longer than 6 months I think there a food product! Maybe a glycerin or something but they go crispy n get spider webs in bottle and start to stink like something turning bad! When on the model your paint then cracks like bad gloss coat and peels in flakes instead of the nice fine chips when it's brand new! So I'm going to test my new bottle by keeping it refrigerated and see if its the heat in the house model room causing it as soon as there opend and hit with the air but there is something weird going on with AKs chipping fluids!

I think it's made by the same company as Createx the thinner is the same and they have the same polyurethane mix additive. My works at the university of Michigan and they tested it and found it to be the same product so the Createx thinner and Polly is cheaper

So can you do this technique over a coat of future after you’ve placed your decals? Does spraying hairspray over the future effect the entire chipping process in a bad way?
@Cake_Doge4 жыл бұрын
Cptpaul12 do you mean varnish by future? If yes the layer of varnish doesn’t do anything, actually it protects the paint from getting chipped unintentionally.

Can anyone else comment on the irony of a bald dude teaching me about "hold strength" of hairspray?
@kellydodge66353 ай бұрын
Like most, I use Tamiya with reliable and predictable "chipping" success. However, if you don't put a gloss coat down over your base, before the hairspray, you can easily "chip" down to the bare plastic. Disastrous results. With Mission Models, I have had zero success with "chipping." What you get is the paint smearing and coming off. It is an interesting effect but not the true "chipping" you get with Tamiya.
