The video and sound here are two different things. Look at his tremolo swings... he stops doing it while in the audio he is still doing it.

Notice how flat his picking hand stays during those sections too. He doesn't bend his wrists at all as he's going through the sweeps. Anyone who wants to learn Sweeps needs to mimic what he's doing. Perfect drag and drop technique at the correct tempo his left hand is moving.

@medved At least someone said it. Can't stand when you see a master of the craft compared to guitarists that, while good in their own right, are nowhere near that upper echelon. Plenty of lesser celebrated guitarists blow those guys out of the water.

What makes him the best, especially with Symphony X, is he knows when to "shut up". His rhythm riffs are just as delicious as his straight up shredding. He is definately in my top 5.

Everytime i listen to Michael Romeo, i'm wondering why he doesn't get the attention he really derserves. I mean yes, there are all those names like, Petrucci, Satriani, Henson, Abasi, Malmsteen ond so on, but Michael is at least in the same category and to me he even surpasses a lot of them names.

@@shredd5705 Yes he is. To me he is one of the most underated, talented guitarists of all time. I'm also very into jazz. Jazz guitarists got some crazy skills. But Michael is on a level like Guthrie Govan or Alex Hutchings

I've seen Symphony X 6 times, met the band twice, and got some picks from Michael Romeo! He uses those small jazz picks. Awesome musician.

3 decades yes, but he clearly also practices shitton, and never really stopped. Kinda like Paul Gilbert. Same can't be said about many shredders, many of them get lazier after they get fame

I once asked Bumblefoot if he admired Romeo's work, since they both strike me as being stand-out guitar wizards when it comes to blazing chops AND brilliant melodic ideas. Bumblefoot said they grew up near each other, have known each other for years, and have great admiration for each other.

Just unbelievable. Those partial to full sweeps are something else, and his economy picking and picking technique in general is superhuman. Romeo doesn't get 1/10 of the recognition that he deserves!

The sweep part feels like it defies what we interpret as Guitar playing. It sounds like a pre mapped synth run; like something only a computer could accomplish. The dude is a transcendent guitarist.

MR is absolutely incredible. He makes the trickiest, most technical guitar runs look easy - everything is so smooth and, seemingly, effortless. Sure hope Michael and the rest of Symphony X come back and play some shows in the UK sometime.
