I’m 37 years old and after 10 years working in an office setting similar to this I can honestly say that having a boss like Michael Scott would be amazing. @mccarthy5825

That's why they wrote David Brent more sympathetic and caring, closer to what Michael was like actually, in the original UK version. Because he wasn't a bad guy. He was a bit silly, starry eyed and childish, but he wasn't 'the worst boss', something that the media really started to push after the first series. If you watch the UK one(I remember taping it on video when it was out first since we have BBC in Ireland) you will see a difference between the portrayals of him. I spent years in college working in call centres and offices and I have had some absolutely awful wankers for managers one or two genuine cunts. I'd love someone like Michael for sure. Kindness is sadly in short supply in this world. You could do worse than be nice towards your employees.
@JJ_5289

well said. I think most real world bosses learn pretty quickly that they cant be friendly with their employees and still be able to have some level of control over their department/ make their direct supervisors happy. If you are caring and kind towards a subordinate it makes it really tough when you have to inevitably be a strict manager. There has to be some level of respect/fear towards the person in charge or nobody will work. But its why I keep coming back to the show. Makes us all laugh about real worlld/everyday things

The last scene is one of the realest scenes in modern TV history. Anybody who's ever given everything to a job, organization, team, marriage, etc that you have loved just to be treated like you're a bum off the street knows exactly how this feels. The instant realization that it was all for nothing and you really don't matter.

The reason that Michael quits at the end is because David missed the whole point of why Michael was upset. It wasn't about the party, it was about the way he was being treated for which David never apologized.
@phan643

Michael quit because David wouldn't demote or fire Charles just because he didn't get along with him. He was acting like a spoiled child who wasn't getting his way , and likely expected David to try to stop him and beg him to come back. He's somewhat good at his job , yet he's also extremely unprofessional in many areas of his job...the way he treated Pam alone was classic sexual harrassment and pretty much everyone working with Michael had numerous complaints about how he treated them.

13:28 and at that exact moment, Michael realised that Wallace in fact did not get it. He still thinks the reason Michael was upset and why he drove all the way to New York is because he cancelled the party (and the figs) without telling him and not because he deserves to be treated with more respect after 15 years at DM. He felt that there's no point in talking sense into Wallace anymore because of Charles and the fact that he's constantly tried to avoid him for the entire day and he quits. Throughout the run of the show Michael was always portrayed as a goofball and immature. But when he got it right, goodness did he got it very right. And this is one of those moments. He's had it with being the butt of the joke and did the right thing.

I think these scenes are so important. The Office tends to kind of romanticize corporate and work culture; sure, it's boring, but there are good friends and memories, and you can make a living off it that is sufficient to pursue your happiness. These scenes are important to remind us that not every boss is a Michael Scott, who cares about us on a personal level, they are perfectly willing to fire you on a moment's notice, and will rarely acknowledge your contribution, if ever. No one is indispensable, everyone is expendable.
