The complicity of mainstream media is the real disappointment. Governments have always dabbled in this. In South Africa, during most of the apartheid period, it was no secret that conservative newspapers were on the government “payroll”. The lesson was that one should read all news stories as opinion.

When I first came to Africa back in 1983, I met an older Scottish guy who came from Southern Rhodesia, who told me that in SR, he listened to ALL the world service radio broadcasts from ALL the 'leading' countries on the right . . . on the left . . . and in the centre, and afterwards he would make up his OWN mind. I've pondered on this matter all these years and this decade has made me realise what sage advice this was, and I chose to follow it! If only people today could realise what real opportunities they have in life, rather than be slaves to the nonsense they chose to follow without making up their own minds! Ernie . . . RIP

Kudos to Michael Shellenberger, Matt Taibbi and their colleagues who have the courage to speak up despite having their motives impugned and their characters besmirched by the organizations who are behind these efforts to stifle free speech and silence dissenting voices. The interviewer did an excellent job of asking probing questions and then letting his guest speak without interruption. Very well done!

Yet history has proven to us over and over again that totalitarianism comes from the left side of the political and philosophical spectrum. Communism, Nazism, Maoism, Fascism, etc. are all ideologically left-wing political movements. Yesterday as today the leftists have always had an ideological vision of the New Human, and to arrive at this New Human they have always been ready for all inhuman monstrosities. These psychopaths are convinced that they are on the side of good, so they have no qualms about eradicating, even physically, any challenge to good. In short, as long as the left has control over the narrative, and as long as you agree with the leftists they are for freedom of expression or freedom and Democracy, otherwise it is at best the gulag or the reform camps, at worst the execution post and the extermination camps. This is the sad reality that history teaches us.

I would like to point out that a Soviet operative highly placed in the U.S. State Dept., Algier Hiss, was exposed by Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisc.). He wasn't the only USSR spy working in the U.S. government either. McCarthy is frequently associated with the HUAC hearings but the Senator never served in the House of Representatives. The NYT led the charge, however, in affiliating the House Un-American Activities Committee with Sen. McCarthy. In fact, the New York Times fielded quite the contingent of Russia-friendly reporters. After all, the Long March Through the Institutions had to begin somewhere!

Like many innocents, I suppose, I find that the World is increasingly becoming a very scary place. More positively, I was pleased to hear Michael Shellenberger advocate the benefits of nuclear energy. Regarding censorship, it has even found its way into the behaviour of teachers in schools. I really welcome Michael's comments about the encroachment on free speech.
@MrVvulf
@MrVvulf Жыл бұрын
When he was ignorant of the reality that nuclear power is safe and the MOST "green" energy source...he became an advocate. In his early days of journalism, he was a typical progressive, opposing it while willfully ignoring the shortcomings of wind, hydro, and solar power. But as you say, it does speak to his level of integrity that once he delved deeper and learned the facts, his stance changed. On the topic of censorship, and more dangerous still, self-censorship, it's immediately apparent when observing the behavior of people under 25. Most are terrified of having "wrong opinions" or saying something that will get them ostracized. The media and schools are creating generations of conformist sheep. Thankfully, some rebel against that. The courageous ones.
@ChollieD
@ChollieD Жыл бұрын
I think it's an old power structure that is running scared. Elite control over the flow of information used to be so much more absolute. Now they're trying to turn every public-facing job into propaganda in a panic, because so many of us can just bathe in more complex conversations about the state of the world than we ever could before. We're growing up, becoming MORE sophisticated. So they've tried to purge dissidents (Greenwald, Weiss, Carlson, Taibbi, etc etc) who've been made freakin' RICH by support by folks like us. Anyway, I like our chances and am very optimistic long-term that the stories which don't calibrate to reality will eventually be known as false.

There is potential for words to lead to real harm, eg with rumour spreading, fear mongering, lying. But we have libel laws to address those
@NeurobrookeMD
@NeurobrookeMD Жыл бұрын
@@jayjaydubful The harms created by censoring speech far outweigh protecting freedom of speech. People have been lying and saying nasty things since the beginning of time. It's only now the people are so weak and fragile that adults can't handle hurt feelings. We each have a personal responsibility to think about what we're hearing, vet the message and the source. Those who get whipped up into emotional outrage or become fear-stricken and reactive do so because they are allowing their emotions to lead rather than thinking critically. This is what it means to be emotionally unstable. Toddlers are led by emotions and we're living in an age where capable and healthy adults are choosing to live as toddlers. That's far more harmful than free speech, no matter how grotesque or misguided that speech may be. In a perfect world nobody would lie or say mean things but we don't live in a perfect world. We live in reality. In reality, censoring speech and attempts at thought-control are a far greater harm than allowing people to say ugly things.

Human beings should be free to hate whomever they want. Anything less is mind control and prohibiting hate will only breed frustration and worsening hostility. @NeurobrookeMD
@NeurobrookeMD Жыл бұрын
@@AndyJarman I disagree that hatred is good. In fact, I think it's dangerous, which is why Christians were warned against it and are called to love their enemies. But hate is a feeling and people are entitled to work out their own feelings in their own time and in their own way and they cannot do that if they're forced into silence. Those on the side of truth are not afraid of lies, which is why we're against censorship. It is only those who depend on lies that demand censorship because lies cannot stand up to scrutiny. Truth and goodness will always prevail--in time. But I agree that this idea of tolerating everything and everyone is total BS. They're trying to guilt us into immorality. If you don't like our obscene vulgar conduct then you're a bigot. Total nonsense.

They love that buzzword. Somebody pointed out that it's "woke dog culture." I can verify the censorship because I joined a group in support of people unalived by these dogs (up by over 700 percent since 2009) and I was relentlessly harassed, too. Thank you Winston, for having Michael Shellenberger on the podcast. He has reminded me of how invigorated I felt as a teenager when I felt outrage at an injustice. It wasn't the kind of outrage that wanted to cancel someone. Instead it was an outrage that wanted to create in the form of poetry or art that 'said' something. I know as a person who has gone through higher education now that art produced to communicate a message isn't as 'pure' as art for art's sake (sigh!). But we must admit we are humans in this place, in this time that has certain demands of us all. And how we choose to respond to such demands makes all the difference in how make meaning of our world. My point is while we may feel a certain way, what we do with it can have lasting effects. I found by paying closer attention, being mindful of what I felt, I could discern layers of feeling that wanted different things. The one I most valued was one that compelled me to produce art. Mr. Shellenberger reminded me of the first times I felt that and alive it made me feel and connected to my world.

James Madison’s influence crafting the Bill of Rights to the US Constitution cannot go without mentioning how important he felt the first amendment was in terms of freedom of thought. If one cannot say what one thinks, worship God as one sees fit, petition the government for redress and assemble with like-minded people, then one is not a free citizen. It is a shame that most of the press is an arm of the DNC instead of holding government elected and unelected officials accountable to the citizens.

A minor slip. Winston got mixed up between John Stuart Mill (author of 'On Liberty') and John Milton, the author of "Areopagitica", and came up with "John Mill". The iconic defense of free speech, "On Liberty" by Johyn Stuart Mill, is what lept to my mind. Great conversation.

I honestly don't think Trump is that moral of a person, but he does have two things going for him which I like. 1) The Left (and Soros) hates his guts. 2) He loves America. My experience with social media tells me that 'terms of servicw' are anyhing they choose to say they are, so videos and comments are cancelled capriciously and on a whim if a censor suspects the author is not singing from the right hymn sheet. Even life saving information will be cancelled if ths censors dont like it, Dr John Campbell's videos for example. No reason is given.

When someone says something, you have to line the words up along with their meaning to understand what they are saying. You have to believe them before you can disbelieve them. If you're tired, honest, distracted, or they're talking fast, the disbelief, the reasoning, never happens.

It wasn't just the UK and US governments flagging content. We now know the Australian anti-terrorism unit in the department of Home Affairs was doing it too. I find it remarkable that they all used exactly the same methods for censoring their citizens and the same justification - they were only drawing attention to the platform's own terms of service. I begin to wonder how much help the social media platforms have had in drafting their community guidelines (which are also suspiciously similar to one another).

Thank you for standing up for freedom of speech, this has been one of the cornerstones of progress in western civilisation. Interesting that Jacinda Ardern has found a job doing censorship for Harvard University, Im just glad she is no longer here in New Zealand. We were all sick of her lies and manipulation. She was really good at leading the country in a few instances but she became corrupted by power far to quickly. She oversaw the worst government NZ has ever had.

When a country is taken over by another, the first things to go are freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. USA never experienced an invasion and UK had one almost a thousands of years ago. This is why, I suspect, people on these two countries do not fully realize the danger of being depraved of these rights.
