I followed Michael Spinks from his first pro fight. He was amazing! My favorite light heavy of all time. Before the first Holmes fight during an interview Michael told the reporter “I’m not exactly suffering from a power shortage”!! He was humble when asked if he was going to win. With a big happy smile on his face he said; I’m just going to do the best I can and see what happens. No talking bs, just keeping it real. Huge respect! Michael is the man!!

“They’ll beat one us but they won’t beat both of us..” The love those brothers must have and had is amazing and the ability to rely on someone like that is beautiful. The Spinks brothers will always be remembered for the olympics in my family. RIP World Chanpion Leon Spinks I had watched Michael Spinks fight so many times on HBO and became a fan as he moved up weight divisions. I had always hoped to see him fight my other favorite boxer, Marvin Hagler, but they were always too far apart in weight. I thought World Champion Michael Spinks had the boxing intelligence and skills to thwart & outlast World Champion Mike Tyson as it seemed like Ali vs. Foreman to me. At that time it was rare for Tyson to go deep into the later rounds and I had seen the stamina that Spinks had. Also, many felt like me that Tyson was a bully and a 'one trick pony' and had not really been tested by a good strategic fighter. What I didn't account for was the visceral fear that Mike Tyson struck into his opponents, and it was painfully apparent that this is the demon that haunted Michael Spinks in that fight. All-in all, Michael Spinks deserved to compete to be The World Heavyweight Champion, no question about it.

Mike was a great fighter and great champion. Olympic gold medal... with his brother... what a story that was. An absolute beast as a light heavy... all time great... moves up to challenge Larry Holmes for the heavyweight belt... probably didn't think he would win, but it was a chance to make the big money. But then he won the decision. Let Larry challenge again for the rematch... beat him again... then put it all on the line for Tyson. Then called it a career. It's just a perfect ending. Of course now, they say Butch Lewis stole all his money. That is a tragedy. I hope he can have a decent retirement.

Spinks was a great champion. In terms of actual boxing, he is right up there. Technically very good, no weak areas in his game and was and still is, a good role model for anyone learning how to box. Remember, the only person that can fight like Mike Tyson is Mike Tyson. There are just not that many people that can cram all that muscle and power into such a relatively small frame and be able to keep that power and speed. Combined with a perfect execution of the peek-a-boo style which only really suits shorter, powerful, quick and compact fighters, it would always be difficult to beat that. Had Tyson learned traditional orthodox or south paw, I do not believe he would have been anywhere near as successful.
