"Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra," composed by Gioachino Rossini in 1815, is a "dramma per musica" with a libretto by Giovanni Schmidt. Set in the 16th century, it follows the fictionalized story of Queen Elizabeth I of England, exploring political intrigues and romantic entanglements at the royal court.
While not as widely known as some of Rossini's other works, the opera showcases his characteristic melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality, and dramatic flair. The part of Leicester exemplifies the baritenor vocal style. The music is adorned with intricate embellishments and serves as a flawless illustration of pre-romantic vocal dramatic expression.
