Shannon Sharpe and Michael Vick discuss his highly publicized prison stint in 2007. Shannon asked Vick why he financed a dogfighting ring and Vick shares his thoughts: “I had $13M in the bank at 25 years old and I didn’t know what to do with it….I was taking steps to invest my money properly and as I started turning the corner it was a little too late.”

Mike Vick was sent to prison under a brand new federal law (at the time). The law was written by a veterinarian in the US senate; a dog surgeon. The law makes transporting animals or animal fighting devices across state lines a federal crime. I worked in that senator's Capitol Hill office when it was passed and signed. Mike Vick was one of the very first people to be caught breaking that law and to be sentenced to prison for it. That's why he'd never seen anyone go to prison for dogfighting before. That's also why he went to Leavenworth, a federal penitentiary, and had to serve his full sentence. In it's early form, the bill was actually about rooster fighting but it was expanded to include dogs and every other animal bred for fighting purposes after discussion. Had the term "cockfighting" not made a few senate staffers giggle, Mike Vick wouldn't have served Fed time.

My aunt stole a couple of their bait dogs before they got busted one was blind one was deaf and when you knocked on their door you would hear the dogs run into the door. Very poor conditions those dogs were in. His homeboys would go around Newport News stealing people’s pets and throwing them to their pit bulls to chew on. The way someone could be ok with this is twisted.

There’s a book (and documentary) about what happened to the dog afterwards. I think only like 2 of them had to be destroyed the rest ended up being rehabilitated and some were eventually able to be adopted and went on to live full lives and others went to be therapy dogs. I think the last one died in like 2019? Super feel good story.

Considering a similar dog fighting ring in Norfolk was found very soon after this and the people involved were sentenced to 15 years. I’d say he got off really easy being able to serve his whole time in a level 1 federal prison (that had tennis courts and a cafe) having to only do two years. He even got out and went back to the NFL to make millions of dollars for his family. He’s extremely lucky and should consider himself blessed.
