Stage Check Flight in the R22 Helicopter with 40hr Student

Summer 2013 - After many months of being out of the Robinson R22 helicopter I dusted off my R22 skills with a recurrency flight where I went out and practiced some emergency procedures and etc. The reason for doing this, to give some instruction.
This particular flight was in Western North Caronlina (RHP) near Murphy / Hayesville NC. Weather was decent except that we had a direct cross-wind which kept shifting to favoring different runways throughout the flight. The student I had the opportunity to fly with (every instruction flight is a privilege now that I never get to do it!) had approximately 40hrs of flight time, all of which were in the Robinson R22 helicopter.
I really wish I had documented me going through flight training, specifically my private license. I know for a fact if I went up for a flight with a new / different instructor, different aircraft, different flying area, and not having flown for 2 months I would have been more rusty then I wish to admit.
For any student in training. Anytime you break mold of what you are used to your performance is almost always going to not be as well.
Hope this video is helpful for those learning to fly.
Every student, and Every instructor learns / teaches different. Different flying techniques or preferences are ok, as long as safety is not compromised.

I feel like the student showed a lot of humility letting us watch a lesson after not flying for a while. Just don't give up, fly more, practice the hard stuff and keep plugging away. It will be worth it in the long run.

Well I wish I had a flight instructor like you .You at least are forgiving and give helpful tips. My flight instructor I had, we went out for a "checkride prep" (For a 172 Plane BTW) and after the first mistake I made, he just built on it. It was all I could think about and it kept going and going and going.. I basically stopped flying because of it haha. Frustrating, I bet this guy at least kept trying.

Mr. Miller, You were brave! I once was thinking of doing some introductory flight training (a one time shot to see if my RC helicopter skills would cut it) but after seeing how easy it is to get out of shape, I think I will just crash the models & stay alive at this time. I love your videos, don't stop!

Michael, I'm going to be in trouble when I do my next flight, it has been 6 months. Yaw control of your student was lacking, that is something I didn't have a problem with amazingly. But that T-Bar on the R22 has got to be a killer on your wrist. Nice real experience video, Thank-You for sharing!

Wow, that was very interesting. I know how the student is feeling, I have the tendency to do the same type of thing he was doing. The stress of the 'observation' is less than the stress of the actual activity itself. (Its the old "I can do it perfectly when no one is watching.) B-)

You're my second favorite CFI to watch on KZfaq...other than my CFI in my vids ;). You do a great job teaching your students. Is the DFE "Greg" you refer to out of KHBI? If so, he was my DFE...super guy and a heck of a pilot. Great vids BTW

Super patient instructor!! Student, to me, seemed to not be as "one" with the helicopter. Student was laughing alot. People that make mistakes, laugh, I know. But, this is serious. This isn't a time for giggling and laughing. Student needed to be more relaxed. He needed to be in "one" with the chopper, not fighting it. I liked this instructor. Super patient and a supreme expert! Thanks for this vid. I sure wished when I was younger, I took helicopter lessons. Darn it..

Instructor sounds a little nervous too. I haven't noticed any "Encouragement" or "Teaching"... Only Critiquing of the junior pilot. A little refresher would be better than just poking him and reminding him of what he doesn't know, or doesn't remember.

I thought it was going to be difficult to adjust to, but like most things in R22 it becomes pretty natural. Only thing I struggle with is getting used to the fact the throttle works in reverse of a motorcycle throttle, ie: twist toward you, power decreases and vice versa.

The fact that the student forgot to make the radio calls and therefore no radio call was made shows how incompetent this instructor is. A flight like this is high stress and people are likely to forget things. It is up to the instructor to make sure safety is maintained and that everything is done properly. If the student forgot to make the call then the instructor should have done it. Its like a student crashing the airplane and the instructor going "Well did you crash the airplane?" You should have stopped the student from crashing!

You are a very good instructor I don't know who this person was trained by but he is a licensed pilot and he forgot to announce his landing intentions??? Original trainer did a bad job, Check ride person issuing his license did a bad job. I understand a License is a License to learn but he is not there yet and needs more training. Just because you have an Instructor with you, you give up PIC you always fly as if you are the only one there.

kevin vt it's easy to look at a rusty student and think the people that trained them did a bad job, but often it's just not being current. If you haven't flown in months it's not easy to just pick back up again
@deliawong96

kevin vt first, its just a stage check, not a check ride for issuing the license, this pilot obviously is not a licensed pilot but just a student pilot.

kevin vt I'm on board with Andy. I learned very early on in my time as a Surfman that operating anything is a perishable skill. I saw one of the best Surfman I know mess up a basic tow in moderate weather because he had only clocked 40 hours in a 6 month period handling the boat. Unless you do it constantly your skills will not be as sharp as they can be at their highest. Keep in mind too that there are three types of operators. Naturals, those who can be taught, and those who can't.
