Who Are the Top 30 Rock Bands of All Time? 30 Top Rock Bands Represent the Many Sub-Genres of Rock!
Hey everyone!
In tonight’s video, I list the Top 3 greatest bands in Rock & Roll, each representing a sub-genre in Rock and Rock!
Is your favorite band on the list? And what are the criterion for choosing these monsters of Rock? Are these bands just the ones who outsold their competition? What makes these bands so special, that they found themselves on this Top 30 List of the Great Rock Bands in Rock & Roll?
Of course these and many more questions are answered in tonight’s video!
And as usual if you enjoy tonight;s video, please consider giving it a Thumbs-Up as that helps the KZfaq algorithm better identify the channel to a larger audience!
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel as of yet, just hit that subscribe to ‘The Tribe’ button, and then tap that Top-Bell Icon, and you’ll be notified of all my future videos!

Hi Michael, a bit off topic, but a recent survey says the top 5 bands of all time are Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Pink Floyd, all British bands. No American bands. How can that be? Can you explore this topic in a future video? Thanks

I have a theory about that. When you compare the size and population difference between The U.K. and America, it seems to me that good bands would get noticed more often in UK. And also how rural most of America is compared to England. I think it would be easier to be noticed in a small country compared to a massive nation like America. I've heard some great sounding acts here and been in a few great sounding bands myself. We'd play small shows but never were noticed. America may be over saturated is what I'm getting at.

Other than the Dead, is there an American band that kept its core together for more than a handful of albums or for 10 years? The Band, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, original Allman Bros, they all flamed out. The best bands have multi-talent plus production plus longevity.

A great solid list! I was happy that you mentioned Yes, the Moody Blues and Badfinger as often, rock scribes will exclude them. The musicianship on Yes' Fragile is spine-tinglingly great. I would add the Byrds for being pioneers of folk-rock, jazz-rock, psychedelia and country-rock. Likewise, Big Star for making 3 albums that are classic gems that are finally acclaimed over 20 years after being released.

Only 4 into the list, but thought I’d list my favorite. Blue Öyster Cult. Great albums chock full of melodic rock, with no songs sounding like the next, with 4 vocalists and all 5 members writing. And they played live better than the studio albums, which you don’t hear much.

I'm with you on BOC. They're not a popular band. They're known for Don't Fear the Reaper; Godzilla dn Burnin' For You. Evbery album sounded different. The thinking man's rock. Cryptic; cynical; omnious and beautiful lyrics and music. They went downhill after Al was fired. He was a pivitol member of taht band. Finally there is a book on them by the famed Martin Popoff.

@@flexiblestrategist9922 100% agree about Albert. He was a good drummer with a cool sound, but they missed his writing and producing most when he was gone. The main reason The Symbol Remains is such a good album, IMHO, is due to Richie Castellano and his producing/writing talents. Otherwise we’d have another Curse of the Hidden Mirror or Heaven Forbid. Which are good albums, but not quite the caliber of pre-Revolution by Night records.

Hello Michael. Awesome list. I loved hearing the mention of the band Badfinger. Very inspired. One that I was late to was Steely Dan. I only knew them from some of their singles, but a buddy told me to listen to their albums as complete entities. He said you will love this band forever. He was 100% correct. Thank you for the Terry Kath shout-out. He was simply amazing! Total agreement on U2. Yes, they belong on the list. Yes, their best is among the best rock ever. And yes, they can go off on tangents. As for the Eagles, it sure seems as if it's much better to be a fan of their music than to be in a band with them. Well documented that Don Henley and the late great Glenn Frey certainly made things interesting for some of the other band members. Last one I will comment on is the Police. Always getting better in their short time as a unit. The 1985 Sting solo album had the same energy. I think he was in the middle of a divorce from which probably he was able to draw musical inspiration. The players were a great jazz ensemble. After that the solo Sting catalog is hit and miss but that takes nothing away from the power of the Police. Thanks again from the TRIBE.

On Ringo's drumming...I'm a rightie that could never play as a leftie. He's so unique. Only found out he's a left hander on a right hand kit a few years ago. Now I know why he's so unique. He's no Neil Peart , but good Lord he sounds great. My old drum teacher told me a drummer is supposed to play for the music and make it sound as good as it can. Ringo did that for sure.

I am also a guitar player so music is my true passion in life & that includes both listening to & playing it. I agreed with a major portion of your choices. Rush would have been in my top spot or at least my top 3 with both Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd being the other 2 bands in my top three. I would have excluded Lynyrd Skynyrd and there are a few others I would have on my personal list such as, Todd Rundgren & even with Zeppelin in my top 3 I would still have Robert Plant's solo career on my list as he covers many different styles/genres and has been putting out excellent releases over the course of many, many decades & is still doing it currently with no signs of slowing down. Here are a few other honorable mentions of groups/artists I would have fit onto my list in no specific order: Tom Waits, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Frank Zappa, Primus, Chris Whitley, Prince, King Crimson & The Foo Fighters. Thanks for including Jethro Tull in there! People don't seem to realize just how great they were (especially their 70-80s lineup). They were also the first band to sell out the Garden in two consecutive years (and beat their previous attendance record)!! Zeppelin never did that! LOL (and nothing against them). I would love for you to do a deep dive on that band (if you haven't already) and in particular of the drummer Barriemore Barlow! Who, in my opinion is the most underrated rock drummer. The late great Bonham called Barry the "greatest rock drummer England ever produced!" Great video and keep on rockin'!!

Hey Michael, always respect for your opinions - well almost always! I have always got the feeling that you don't quite "get" The Who, maybe it's an American disconnect. Four phenomenal individuals doesn't tell the whole picture, even when you add a genius composer/lyricist. Two groundbreaking "rock operas" (first of the genre), an album which could have spawned seven great singles (Who's Next), and the social/political commentary that was at the heart of their purple patch of albums was never equalled in that generation. Love the channel as it sets out CRITERIA and CONTEXT for comment and discussion.

Great list. Better than Rolling Stone lists :D A few points I wanna add: - I'd have chosen Simple Minds rather than U2. - Instead of Badfinger and Klaatu, I'd have chosen Tom Petty and Sex Pistols (for their influence) - Nirvana was a huge *NEGATIVE* influence on popular rock music. The state of post-1992 Mainstream American Rock is self-explanatory. - I'd have added Muse to represent post-2000 rock bands - Alice in Chains was a great pick. They were the bridge between 80s Hard Rock and 90s Rock.

Here are some bands I would include on such a list: King Crimson - might not have sold nearly as many albums as "Yes" but the no 1 prog rock band if you ask me. Blue Öyster Cult - Great American band playing melodic hard rock - their early albums very influential i would guess - "Tyranny and mutation" & "Secret Treaties" being my favourites. Moreover, Buck Dharma is one of my favourite guitar players. Pretenders - i just love them, especially the three first albums. Roxy Music - love their first albums, very original band UFO - one of the best hard rock bands Judas Priest - one of the best metal bands Depeche Mode - Don't care much for the genre they represent but I actually like them. I make an exception for the following two bands since they don't have a huge catalog: Mountain - there is a lot more to this band than their signature track "Mississippi Queen". The first two albums were outstanding. When asked "what happened?" in an interview, Leslie West replied: "drugs happened" Jimi Hendrix Experience - Even smaller catalog than that of Mountain but has to be included on my list. I probably agree on the top three

What a list! Can't argue with these choices. As you know Michael, we share a similar Top 3, though our order is slightly different and this would make for a great debate in the future. While I would never argue against the many virtues and sheer power of Led Zeppelin, I have always ranked Pink Floyd a notch higher due to a more original sonic approach in my opinion (and far better lyrics). But it's such a close call, as Zeppelin's catalogue is more consistent and definitely rocks more. Zep was also more virtuosic all around, but it was all in service of a more openly derivative approach (though they did create magic from their primary influences). You also know I rank The Police as one of the all-time greats. Like Zep, every album was a winner and every player one of the very best on their respective instruments. Sting was untouchable as a writer during this period, being able to blend Beatlesque melody with incisive, introspective lyrics. Andy ushered in a new, more textured and chordal approach to guitar that contrasted with the obsessive shredding in vogue at the time. And Stewart was so good, he stole so much of my attention in a live setting (no small feat when your front man is Sting). Such a charismatic band that could also deliver in concert. Had they lasted a bit longer, they'd surely be in everyone's Top 5 of all time. Great work here Michael! Awesome list. ❤

Going by your list, I agree with most as I View this ,I am composing this as I watch the video so I will list alternate bands for the ones I disagree with cat the end Ok let's do this Allman Bros - Great pick, again thier early stuff was just Innovative creating the genre southern Rock opening a door bands like Marshall Tucker Skynyrd. Mollyhatchet, 38 specials walked through U2 Great Puick their early stuff was more consistent and showed depth and Growth while their mid era showed experimental elements achtung baby , Zooropa, pop albums were U2s revolver pepers MMT. & the last 5 or 7 albums really left me flat. Uriah Heep hmmm not enough commercial success. Outside of Sweet Liraine & The Way That it is nothing stuck really I don't know one person who has seen them Live, I lump them I with Wishbone Ash & Barkley James Harvest who presevere with large catalogs and Some critical success, but commercially fall short. I disagree with this pick ELO wow one of the top 15 bands that ever existed and Jeff still periodically gracing us with a new Album Great pick I'd put them much higher but you did say outside of top 3 no particular order bext.next...... The Moody Blues Great pick, just on the strength the core 7 albums is incredible if you include The Denny Laine era as well thatsca nicevbonys had a 3rd life in the 80s but I found the Patrick Moraz era blehh but from the beginning with Denby through the core 7 they are as great as Great can be CSNY hmmmm they are fantastic but too spotty to down right crappy after "Deja vu" I have don't think I have them in my top 30 ,I mean they had great music after just knowing who comprises this band immediately sets any new album up to fail, just on the strength of their pre CSNY bands Byrds Hollies Buffalo Springfield, crazy to have even had two albums that brilliant is miraculous, only other "Supergroup" who besides CSNY was the wilburys and only their 1st album is truly brilliant, Grand Funk hmmmmm I love them I need to see who else ends up on this list but I'm too in the middle with them they were great live, the first part of their career was just mind blowing, But when they went to go popping (American Band, Loco Motion, Bad Time (For being in love) lost me But Heartbreaker, Mean Mistreater , Aimless Lady, I'm your Captain/Closer To Home , Foot Stompin' Music just incredible I may agree depending on who else is on this list WINGS incredible I like Paul better with Wings than with the Fabs. His music was more Gutsy John prob wished Paul wrote his wings songs for the Beatles AGREE 100% BADFINGER The Greatest Band Not named The Beatles in my book, Straight up is a perfect Album & may not even be their best Album Wish You Were Here holds that distinction Agreed Fleetwood Mac great band in all their incarnations The Who great pick Rock Illuminaries KLATTU ???? Really??? Dude come on man Alice in chains nice pick somewhat deserving I wish they had more of a catalog I'm on the fence with this pick basically a 3 album band (facelift, dirt, tripod, plus 2 eps) You kept Nirvana off this list but also a 3 album band (Bleach Nevermind , In Utero,....but no EPs but a 4th album of B sides called Insesticide So I'm balking at this one Doobies ehhhh disagree Chicago great pick in spite of the David Foster Era Sabbath HELL YEA Alice Cooper I don't know man, The early stuff yea but overall No Credence Clearwater Revival F**k Yea America's hit machine on par with the Beatles Eagles yea They Belong but I never liked them (Felt they owed their style to Mike Nesmith Id rather list him) but Eagles Belong Deep Purple yea I Agree totally Mach 2 is brilliant The Stones with Jones or with Taylor great great great, the rest of the way hmmmmm still great just not as ...... Tull yea deff Belong don't have the hits like they did in the 70s but they still make killer music Steely Dan Just Wow brilliant music The Police what a consistently great band each album gers better one by one Yes - Agree , deff more consistent than ELP but not nearly as progressive as Crimson Queen well one of the greatest Bands ever 3rd fave.....Pink Floyd yea agreed 2nd Led Zep can't argue this pick 1st The Beatles just the yard stick every band that has ever existed are measured against So now to replace the bands on this list that I disagreed with with suitable replacement groups. Uriah Heep I'm replacing that with Todd Rundgren with or without Utopia & Nazz Grand Funk Railroad I'll replace with Cheap Trick CSNY I will Replace with R.E.M. Kkattu I am replacing with XTC only one band has progressed more From their First album to their last than XTC that other band was The Beatles Alice In Chains I will Replace with Nirvana Doogie Brothers I will replace with The Kinks How many bands had hit records in every Decade 60s 70s 80s & last hit "Do it Again" 1990 Alice Cooper I will replace with Stone Temple Pilots HONORABLE MENTIONS: The Cure, Bon Jovi, The Raspberries, The Byrds, The Hollies, The Zombies The Monkees , Big Star

Good video; a few of your picks would not be on my top 100. But a few I really were floored by (and totally agree with)...Moody Blues for certain, and maybe ELO. I love Badfinger (have since the early 70's, still remember loving their music as a 3rd grader back in the early 70's); but unsure if they had the long term presence. You started mentioning a Canadian Band...and I thought that Triumph would get a nod from you. Rik Emmett is in my opinion, not only one of the greatest rock guitarists, but add in his double duty as lead vocals; and few compare. And speaking of Canada (no I'm not from Canada; but close by growing up near Buffalo); what is it that kept Rush out of the top 30? Not saying I place Triumph in top 30; but yes to Rush. A lot of great bands; you could easily replace 20 of the 30 from your list and not get a whole lot of kick-back. That would be a good video..."Who might I sideline and replace with".

Love this show. For me, a band that would be on my list is influenced by Jethro Tull, UFO, and Deep purple. But also from the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, the horror comics of the 1950 like “Vault Of Horror” and “Tales From The Crypt”. In fact a few of their earlier album covers even looked like the comic books. Grim stories like “Murder in the Rue Morgue” and “The Phantom of the Opera”. Great Heavy Metal based stories. I’m talking about the Mighty Iron Maiden. Here's a topic for future consideration: bands who had all members make solo records. So far, my incomplete list is Beatles, who, police and CSNY. There are probably a few more. Might be a fun topic to explore

Eagles? Some come so close, with three out of four etc. like Zeppelin. Queen And many members did projects with other bands but not @solo” projects per se. Most of the drummers would not do solo projects IMO. Interesting concept though

AC/DC are second on my list, only exceeded by mighty ZEP! The band that so many others have tried to duplicate, never coming close.....total magic and so rocking, rhythmic and FUN! RIP Malcolm Young, God of rhythm guitar, riff after riff after riff after riff......

Grand Funk Railroad...YES 🎉 Brewer was a good vocalist and drummer but Farner is absolutely the frontman for GFR. The strutting, running around the stage, great lead vocals and the fact that he wrote 90% of the material. There would never be a Grand Funk Railroad without everything Farner offered.
