Many small businesses manage to sustain themselves, despite lacking clear and distinct roles for ownership and management, timely and accurate accounting, and documented process and procedures. Worker-owned and worker-managed companies often attempt to replicate this practice, although find themselves quickly running into trouble.

Micheal fell in love with the potential of cooperatives while working at The Flaming Eggplant at the Evergreen State College. He has since been deeply involved with many co-ops, including the Olympia Food Co-op, New Moon Cooperative Cafe, the Northwest Construction Cooperative, and the Business Services Cooperative. Today, Micheal lives back in Spokane where he grew up, with his partner and daughter, and is a member-owner of the Spokane Workers Cooperative.
