Lyrics (by Frank Loesser)
You have the cool, clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth
Yet there's that upturned chin
And the grin of impetuous youth
Oh, I believe in you
I believe in you
I hear the sound of good, solid judgment whenever you talk
Yet there's the bold, brave, spring of the tiger that quickens your walk
Oh I believe in you
I believe in you
And when my faith in my fellow man
All but falls apart
I've but to feel your hand grasping mine
And I take heart
I take heart
To see the cool, clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth
Yet with the slam! bang! tang! reminiscent of gin and vermouth
Oh, I believe in you
I believe in you

I occasionally watch the washroom scene where Finch sings it to himself. I would be struck by the irony that a conniver like him would see the eyes of a seeker of "wisdom and truth." I just now realized that she saw that in him, and told him very powerfully, and in his hour of crisis he looked deep into his soul and saw that, too. A great lesson in how to positively impact people.

so I was reading an excerpt from the book: Once upon a Secret, by Mimi Alford. She wrote that when JFK played this song and listened to the words "You have the cool, clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth" "seemed to light up some pleasure center deep inside his brain"

Michele Lee was the second or third (I forget which, exactly) replacement for the role of "Rosemary" in the original B'way production, and yet she was the one selected for the film. Lucky for her, and we, the audience.

you can tell , Morse's great acting here. He stays VERY understated or whatever the word is. He lets her sing and makes us the audience really believe.. He DOES NOT upstage. God i want to see in TRU. Has that been filmed? His Tony award stage one-act thingy of Truman Capote?? God I would LOVE to see thAT

Michele was lip-synching to her own pre-recorded voice. Miming to a playback is the way musical numbers have usually been done in movies.

Actually, this did not happen in the original Broadway concept and production of the show. It was added for the movie and, I think, really ruins the impact of the number when Finch later sings it to himself. It makes it look like he is remembering what Rosemary previously told him instead of expressing his own narcissism and egotism. It makes him seem like much less of a conniving, self-promoting (though loveable) ass than he really is.

Yeah? This was an "added-to-the-movie" song?! i never knew that ! I was reading everybody's comments and agreeing that i love it as a ballad, i love Her as-Rosemary, and then i read yours and sort of agree -him singing it later to himself... I was....18-20 when i saw the movie, never having seen the stage origins, and... I guess i thought it was-showing how love Can-transform and empower a person.. Him singing-the-song to-himself, paired with the businessmen (gotta stop that man!...cold! Or he'll stop me).. I took it like that grain of her-love, that song through his-voice _was_ the only thing that protected him from their take-down. Right ?... Like he ends the movie a less conniving ass, yes?

@tigibus7 then they were successful because it was their intent in making Finch sing it as a reprise to tone down his egotism and narcissism. Thanks for confirming their intended result

@chinzebo I agree. You know, in terms of really understanding the day to day human condition and needs I wonder if there has ever been a greater songwriter than Frank Loesser. I am in eternal awe at his lyrics, both humorous and romantic, coupled with his incredible melodies and harmonies...My Time Of Day would have made Ravel or Debussy proud and My Heart Is So Full Of You is the joint greatest love duet alonside Bess You Is My Woman Now.
