i cried when she said "for all the boys and girls who look like us" because this kind of recognition means so much to asian people, southeast asian people especially. and i know that this award serves to acknowledge michelle's superb performance in the film but other people just don't realize how it opens a whole ton of opportunities for us - the kids that look like them. michelle yeoh is such a goddamn legend, she's my hero.

Sounds more like she expected to win the award due to her ethnicity. So absolutely tired of hearing abut race in this award season. If these actors and actresses in this (horrible) movie were white, it wouldn't have even been nominated and probably would be streaming on Pluto TV by now. So the awards aren't about "best right now", but much different criteria.

I feel emotional just like her, finally getting all the love and recognition she deserves for everything that she's done and represents, but still its not enough for all the talent and kindness she has. its a must that oscar goes to her and getting awards like this just become a routine for her every year from now as it should have been since the very start of her career.

I have loved Cate for 9 years and she continues to perform sublimely in Tar but come on, Michelle Yeoh has to win the Oscar this time! She brought everything in EEAAO, from comedy to drama to action... not even Cate Blanchett could do what she did. She deserves this win so bad. Let's face it, Cate is gonna win her third one a couple years later, so let Michelle have this one!

Not necessarily. Cate's last oscar nom was for Carol which came out in 2015. The award should go for the best performance only and CB performance was the best of the five nominated. Having said that it's a foregone conclusion now that Michelle yeoh will win next Sunday night.

@@ciaranosullivan9352 Deciding who's better than who objectively is impossible. To you, it might seems like CB performed the best out of the other 5, but to someone else it might be someone else. At the end of the day, these are all just opinions. No need to act like there's one actor performing better objectively in an art form. This isnt math, there's no one true way in acting.

@@rokale7418You can't really compare their performances. Cate's movie is a very serious drama whereas hers is more of a comedy/action movie with some dramatic moments sprinkled sporadically throughout the film. It's always easy to assume that it's easier to do comedy than drama, but the truth is it's much harder. That's not to say that Cate isn't deserving of the Oscar. She did some of her best work in this movie and she's truly one of the best actresses of our time. I'd be happy if either of them wins the Oscar.

This was the first year that the Independent Spirit Awards did gender neutral categories. Michelle Yeoh won Best Lead Performance here. There were 10 nominees total (2 were men). I sincerely hope Michelle will be winning an Oscar in a week!

Very HAPPY she finally gets all this recognition and awards for her work. I used to watch her in kung fu movies before she even had her first role in hollywood when I was a teenager and have been a fan since! :) Always looking forward to see her in more movies cause this woman can do it all and is awesome in in doing so!

Cate won BAFTA and critics choice awards. They both won in golden globes under different categories. It's gonna be a tough fight between them this year. I hope it goes to Michelle though. She deserves it so much. Besides, Cate Blanchett did go out of her way to show support for Michelle. I think she is rooting for her too. The Oscar would mean so much more for Michelle than for Cate. Let's hope the Oscars people aren't dumbs dumbs and give people what they actually wanted.

When it comes to the Oscars and predicting the winners, the various Guilds awards are more important than the critics awards. EEAAO won Best Film at the Producers Guild of America awards and Best Director at the DGA awards. Michelle won Best Actress at the Screen Actors Guild awards. Because of those Guild wins, both EEAAO and Michelle are now front runners to win Oscars.
