+Deirdre de la Rosa Because in america anything dio de los muertos has become a chance for white hipsters to have a party 15 days before the holiday where they dress up as sugar skulls get drunk and have coffin races. Its become second Halloween to them. And everyone I've talked to about it who, "has a deep spiritual connection to it," is also severely anti-religion and in particular any catholic. Which shows just how deeply connected to it, and how much research they've done on it.

So many people are hurt by this "cultural appropriation" but most of the people who are hurt aren't even Mexican -_- ya need to chill. Michelle clearly knows her history on what she's doing, she's not trying to steal anything and she gave credit where credit is due. Everybody is always trying to find fault in everything.

The reason why this is not appropriation is because, cultural appropriation occurs when you borrow something from another culture *and* you are ignorant on the subject. It's not like is she said "try this new trendy cool pretty skull" then that's cultural appropriation. But Michelle shows that she is quite knowledgeable on the Day of the Dead and uses information and educates the viewers about its significance. Therefore shes not appropriating

+Nyah Alexis Exactly, I mean this tutorial will be great for Book of Life cosplayers. The character, La Muerte is designed after sugar skulls and the whole movie revolves around the Day of the Dead. So in a nutshell, a majority of cosplayers who try to do La Muerte's look for their costumes are not appropriating Mexican culture, because the movie fully informed them about the holiday so they know about the holiday.

Fainora nope go do you. Just know how take care of them. It's a protective style for black hair. Like if you wear box braids just because they're pretty and not know what you're doing you're gonna take them out to find that your edges have fallen out. Also don't try to call it something different. They're dread locks and the come from Africa and the Middle East. Not "hair knot twists" that Miley Cyrus created at the VMAs. If you respect my culture then we're all good :)

I am part Mexican. My great grandfather was born and raised in Mexico. Sugar skulls are meant to be shared and celebrated. That's the whole point of Dia de Muertos is to celebrate together in memory of our deceased loved ones.

For the ignorant people who think this is disrespectful or racist, you should just stop the hate already. As a Hispanic myself, I'm proud that this culture is "out there" and that people are appreciating the beauty of it. It doesn't matter what race you are. I think it's more disrespectful for Mexicans and other Hispanics to say that you can't be a sugar skull if you aren't one of them.

Para todos los mexicanos que de alguna manera se ofenden de esto, o que piensan que no es apropiado, ¿no creen que deberían de sentirse orgullosos de que personas de otros países se interesen en nuestra cultura? Tenemos cosas horribles en este momento en México y nuestras tradiciones son las cosas que nos hacen sentirnos orgullosos pase lo que pase. A mi me parece que este maquillaje se ve hermoso y es increíble que alguien no mexicano haya querido hacer esto, en vez de verle lo "malo", porque no mejor disfrutas del vídeo y te sientes orgulloso de ser lo que eres.

as a Mexican, I don't mind people painting themselves as Sugar Skulls, I think it's awesome that people acknowledge them. I don't like that people wear them as "costumes" for Halloween, because that's not what they are. They're for celebrating The Day of the Dead and honoring those who have passed.

As a mexican, I don’t mind this video. Her intro was very informative and somewhat accurate (DDLM has nothing to do with the Spanish. It’s derived 100% from the Aztecs) Overall, I love how she was respectful enough to title this beautiful look in Spanish. Just please be respectful to our people and culture if you are going to recreate a calavera look. 😊

I personally don't care if people that aren't of Mexican descent do makeup like this. It's just when they use it for Halloween that makes me upset because Dia De Los Muertos is not supposed to be a Scary thing. It's mostly for celebrating the life of a loved one that has passed.😕

+Devan Jones The thing is that my culture is not just "a beautiful Halloween costume" that you can wear one day and wash it away the next one. That's what I find offensive. I don't mind non mexican people celebrating Día de Los Muertos and painting their faces as the girl in the video, but when you just do it because "it looks pretty" it's just not right, it's offensive. Daniela Gzz I was just saying that it's not scary. I never said that it was only pretty and that's all that it signifies. I was just saying that Dia de Los Muertos isn't scary at all, and in fact it's a beautiful celebration. You shouldn't act as if you are quoting me, because you aren't. If I offended you, it was never my intention. I truly respect your culture, and all cultures, and nothing I said was stating otherwise. Please stop assuming that I don't because that isn't and will never be true.

***** I would never wear this as a costume, myself. I, as I said earlier, was just telling the original commenter that this isn't scary. Again, if you're offended, I didn't mean to offend you. I, myself, didn't take this makeup as a costume, I know about Dia le Los Muertos and if I wanted to do this makeup look, I would do it then instead of halloween. To everyone getting mad at Michelle for appropriating the Mexican culture: Halloween is the end of the Celtic year and marks the beginning of a triduum by the name of Allhallowtide. It is the Christian equivalent of Day Of the Dead, essentially, where they remember the dead of all departed Christians, including saints and martyrs and such. So to everyone getting butthurt over this video: grasp your ears and firmly pull your head out of your ass. If you're gonna complain about this then maybe you should educate yourselves complain about all those who aren't of said pagan or Gaelic or Celtic roots who celebrate Halloween. Celebrating Halloween as an American holiday is cultural appropriation in itself.

I feel so sad reading all these comments here. Do most people actually know what racism is? You are bashing a girl on the Internet for appreciating and sharing a look that came from another culture, and you guys are shouting RACISM! I believe that racism is still an issue nowadays but if you shout racism everywhere people won't be able to distinguish between what real racism is and not. And thus people won't care anymore about the real issues.

This isn't the most intricate, perfected sugar skull on YT but it's my favorite, hands down. Maybe it's the production value of the video itself, but it's just captivating nonetheless. Love the yin/yang combo of the cross above and the lotus below. Very deep meaning from 2 different spiritual traditions. Beautiful.

This is such a beautiful look! And for people who are offended - Michelle never said that this was for Halloween, and that it was for a Halloween costume. She simply was showing a tutorial on how to do a sugar skull look. She even mentioned the Day of the Dead, so she obviously understands and has respect for the celebration. :) Other tutorials might be more clueless and be using it for a Halloween costume, but this one isn't. I think it captures the beauty of the holiday and it makes me proud, not offended.

I was asked to host a dia de muertos party for my school, so I'm making a traditional outfit and I'm going to use this as inspiration. My color scheme is going to be purple, teal and black since those are my favorite colors.

it's amazing how much of a difference those light blue lines made. As soon as she started adding them they made the eye sockets looks so much more hollow as if she were really a skeleton. :)

patricia soto if you ever do crazy makeup like this again, smear petroleum jelly/vaseline all over your face. Let it sit for about 3 minutes then wipe it off. If it is really hardcore go back in with make up remover or baby oil. The baby oil should work better than the makeup remover, but it is an oil so it will clog up your pores. If you are unlucky you might get a breakout from the baby oil. Only use the baby oil if nothing will come off, or around the eye area where tricky mascaras and eyeliners may be!

I believe that she had explained clearly in one of her old video from 2011, where she did the makeup inspired by the Day of Dead, that this day supposed to a day to remember your loved ones and not supposed to be scary. That means she understands the meaning of the day. I mean, she's done this makeup before, and she's just doing it again with a different design. stop judging her butthurt people ._. i'm from Asia, i don't really understand the meaning of the day, but Michelle had explained it before. So what's more to complain? and sorry for my freaking bad English. I'm from Vietnam and English is not my first language.

im not mexican but im filipino and i still celebrate this. however, i live in singapore and my grandparents are buried in philippines, instead i dress as a sugar skull, put their pictures on my table, place candle and dance as if they were really watching. i miss dancing for them. i look like an idiot doing it, but i love it. :)

"You're not Mexican" - I guessed she probably has no Mexican heritage, therefore having no real fondness of Dia De Los Muertos. "No clue of cultural appropriation" - Please point to where I said that exclusively Mexicans are the only ones who have a culture. Admit it, Mexico is probably the most unimportant country in the world. It's nice to see her own people standing up for themselves when they have the opportunity instead of being shot to death. Just as trying to look like a Geisha is cultural appropriation, why isn't this cultural appropriation? There isn't much of a difference.

It’s Not Spanish heritage as it is not from Spain or inspired by anything Spanish babes. It’s mexica (proper way to pronounce) heritage. As old as the Aztecs. You did great though. The colors were beautiful and I’m glad you found our culture intriguing enough to try it yourself. The way you paint it is unique to you and that’s what makes it even more beautiful.

Get a powder puff and buff it out in light circular motions ^.^ it also depends if it's a dry or moist base in the pancake makeup!-buy from Mehron, Ben Nye, and Makeup Forever if you want nice quality body paint :)

I remember watching this as a 5 year old girl. Last year I watched the movie Coco and immediately started breaking down at the sight of the spirits. At that time Michelle was gone, and I missed her so badly. And also I cried because of the sad story😭

No but the reason we're "butthurt" is because it's not supposed to be scary or used for Halloween. El dia de los muertos is a day to remember your loved ones. But you're right at least it isn't some white girl using it cuz she doesn't have any time to make a costume and she does it cuz it's "cute"
