One of the great questions in all of science is where consciousness comes from. When it comes to consciousness, Kaku believes different species have different levels of consciousness, based on their feedback loops needed to survive in space, society, and time. According to the theoretical physicist, human beings' ability to use past experiences, memories, to predict the future makes us distinct among animals - and even robots (they're currently unable to understand, or operate within, a social hierarchy).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHIO KAKU:
Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as well as New York University (NYU).

TRANSCRIPT:
MICHIO KAKU: In the entire universe, there are two great unsolved problems. The two greatest problems in all of science, first of all, is about the very big. It's about the origin of the universe. Why did it bang? Why do we have an expanding universe? And I personally work on something called the multiverse, which we think is the dominant source of theories that gives us the universe before creation itself-- the multiverse. But there is also the mystery of inner space, not outer space.
And that's the human mind. Where does consciousness come from? And I think that in my book, The Future of the Mind, I try to make a stab at what is consciousness? First of all, let me explain my theory. I have my own theory of consciousness. I think consciousness is the sum total of all feedback loops necessary to create a model of yourself in space, in society, and in time. Now, I'm a physicist. We like to measure things and quantify things. I think there is a unit of consciousness. If consciousness is a sum total of all feedback loops necessary to create a picture of yourself in space, in society, and in time, then the unit of consciousness is a thermostat.
A thermostat has one unit of consciousness, because it has one feedback loop-- measures temperature. Now, a plant has maybe five units of consciousness, because plants have to regulate temperature. They have to regulate humidity, the direction of gravity, when to sprout. So there are maybe five or so feedback loops in a plant. Then we go to alligators. The alligators are masters of the back part of the brain. And then you have maybe several hundred feedback loops that govern space. That's what alligators are very good at.
Their brain, if you look at the parts of the back of the brain, we, too, have the reptilian brain that governs our understanding of space, where we are in space. And then, going forward in time, evolution gave us the monkey brain, the center of the brain, the limbic system. And the limbic system, in turn, governs society. It governs where we are with respect to our elders, our children, other human beings. Pack mentality, wolves, all of them have a developed central part of the brain, the monkey brain. And then the front part of the brain is what distinguishes us from the animals. It is the temporal brain that constantly simulates the future.
Animals don't do that. In fact, animals don't even have much of a memory. When you look at a brain scan of what is the brain doing when it's thinking, thinking hard? What is the brain doing? You find out that the prefrontal cortex is active, and it is accessing memories of the past. You see, animals don't do that. Animals have not much of a memory. They don't see the future, because there's no necessity to see the future. There's no necessity to have much of a memory. In fact, the purpose of memory could be to simulate the future. Animals don't need it.
Why didn't the dinosaurs become intelligent? Well, they didn't need to become intelligent, because we humans sometimes overexaggerate the importance of intelligence. Intelligence is not necessary to live in the forest, but we are maladapted to live in the forest. We don't run very fast. We can't fly. Our skin...

Considering that the VAST majority of dreams are NOT remembered (you have tons of dreams every night but you only usually remember the last one) these future dream-recording devices are gonna be a huge source of very creative entertainment! I mean, can you imagine getting 30 mins of generated footage every time you wake up? I wanna see people upload that to the future KZfaq. I bet there'll be a whole industry of people who create movies by thinking them and then recording them. It could put hollywood out of business. that's something to think about!

I read that they do not need chips and electrodes. There's an article about Dr Jose Delgado and him being able to control another person by sending electric signals to the brain. Dr Allen Frey (Frey Effect) could send speech/verbal communication to another person's brain. If a person with particular skills does not like you this is what they use to harrass you. I am a victim.

Being able to pick up signals from the brain in regards to motor skills is completely different than being able to interpret abstract thoughts or dreams. The parts of the brain that control movement and the more basic stimuli (hunger, sex, etc.) are much simpler than the frontal lobe where actual thoughts and personality happen.

I was able to see your last few minutes of the lecture you gave at the Science & Engineering Festival in D.C. this past weekend. Thank you so much for your dedication and enthusiasm in your field of expertise. I am rather perplexed as to what the point is in recording someone's dreams. I myself have had nightmares for half of my life. Last year, it took a turn where it involved demons and zombies. Recording dreams and thoughts is either "Knowledge is Power" or "Be careful with what you wish for." Avoiding horror movies and video games do not seem to be of much help. The antidepressants work, but not always.

This same practice for creating visual objects in the mind could also be applied, to the speaking part for the brain, and if it is decoded and translated into basic computer code, we could have in essence an instant perfect way of eliminating the language barrier. You would be able to with a computer, talk to a person who does not speak your language, but with the computational settings applied you would understand them as simple as if you already where fluent in said language. This practice could also be applied to when we Finally find another sentient to talk and share ideas with, and eliminate one of the first major problems of meeting a new intelligent life form, Language. Cool huh :D

They should put lucid dreamers in an mri scanner, make them walk around in an environment that already exists, and use virtual reality recording technologies to get even more accurate renderings. Example: First use a vr headset to record and experience something (simultaniously?), then watch said recording and scan brain. Link the mri scan and video recording frame by frame. do this several times until all possible environment interactions are linked to scanned results. Finally get the lucid dreamer in an mri scan and have them dream the scenery. Generate the images using the computer program. I think the perfect environment would be a simple room with a piano in the center. they should limit factors that could elicit emotional responses so the scan is clearer though... I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about. different responses that reside near similar regions of the brain could cause interference, right?? Intellectual reputation insurance: This prediction is based on my ghetto youtube/wikipedia research loosely gathered during my free time so please dont lynch me for my potentially ignorant fantasy.

I'm a few years late to this vide but YES!!! I've always thought it would be cool if we somehow eventually develop the technology to record dreams. I imagine it being like a beanie of sorts that you wear when you sleep and through sensors and wizardy and whatnot, it can record brain stuff and turn it into Audio and Visuals. That beanie is connected to a DVR of sorts so, as Michio says at @05:45, you can then wake up and head to a TV and press play so you can watch your dreams! This would be GREAT for people like me who sometimes have a tough time remembering dreams or perhaps just want to rewatch that crazy dream we had.

This is an awesome video by a fantastic physicist. I absolutely love it because I believe I'm an empath. And of I've saved peoples lives because of overwhelming feeling someone is about to hurt themselves or Die. Ghost I had this feeling about a girl one day when I was in town. At night people watching. She was standing on the corner crying. And she walked across the roads and I had this overwhelming feeling which I could not ignore. That she was about to herself. I ran across the bridge and I was right. She was about to crawl of a 75 foot drop train tracks. I honestly don't know how I do it. And the other day one of my favourite actors of my mum died. And I had this intense feeling that something was wrong with her. So I called her and she was crying. And I told her that let it out cry. I think I get my empathic ability of my mother. She is also one. Thank you so much for disagreeing with neurology and psychology. I really appreciate it. I am ridiculously antidepressive resistant. All they have done is caused me problems. And my country has the highest rates of youth suicide in the world. I am an ex psychologist and music therapist. So I tried my best to help. But some, not all, psychiatrists can be so cold and removed. I made an effort to change that. And I've actually told off several visiting psychiatrist, saying incredibly rude right in front of my client. I said I'm sorry when I'm in here I'm in charge. My studio. One of them after I showed some of the work I was doing with one of my clients. Sitting right in front of him, didn't know someone like that could do something like this. I politely but firmly kicked her out. Yeah I was thinking I don't know what why someone like you has a job like this. If your skin isn't in the game stay out of the business. That comment about seeing the dreams is amazing. But I'm already ridiculously lucid in my dreams. They're like movies, and I have waking dreams. Which are always terrifying. Something that a lot of people might not know. Is a lot of autistic people are actually empaths. Believe this has something related to the sensory overload. I woke up almost completely paralysed once. All I could move was my head in my left arm slightly. Sorry had to use Carl Jungs technique of psychologically manipulating yourself. Otherwise I would have died. And I don't understand and neither do I. I was originally in a coma for a day or 2. Then I could walk Friday 3 with a walking stick. They told me I should have had to be in hospital for up to a year to have rehabilitation like when you have a stroke. Thank you for helping me feel this crazy lol

You do know that it was less then 100 years after the first power flight we had a human walking on the moon right? Now go back in time and say to the Wright brothers that their efforts will have help the US to have a man walking on the moon in 64 years, then ask them if they think that will be possible or not. The speed of the advancement of technology to the extent its just ridiculous. My grandparent parents lived in a world without a refrigerator or cars, imagine that. There is a mistake on what Kaku says about the presence of pain receptors in the skull: the skull, the skin that covers it and the meninges (between the skull and the brain) they all have pain receptors but the brain itself does not. So when operating in the brain a local anesthetic must be used but the patient can be awake during the process, because the brain does not have the nociceptors needed to detect the pain stimulus.

Linguistic mathematics: Figure A & figure B.. contact and interact.. figure x is there as a constant when there are relative two or more figures at bulk.. so any configurations are predefined at.. at least with a number one less than the overall uniting given/concrete figures into the configutation and plus one and more virtual x, n figures or configurations.. plus: all virtuals eternally can have beed added to any virtual configuration(s). That is how timings are preconfigured at basic concrete terms and are of possiblities potentially. .. Lest timing is not the overall or ultimate time concept.. because of pulse dynamics in every living being is what we know as will and movement.. so pulse is wehen predefined configuration .. this it is a consent or intention.. multiple timings can be preconfigured and can be applicable related to interactiblities where the end formality or course is the contract.. and this contract in end is a result of the consent/intention within pulse. .. NEVERTHELESS: The first and the second experiments say the same result as with what is matching up with the Superman insidance has as conditions and results: an A>Z car's and Z>A car's speeds make a total timing difference when their speeds are added to eachother aswith how they approach eacother.. aswith how they'd interact or reach eachother.. .. Laser beams let us say one pure blue and the other is mere yellow.. if due to different arguing points bring out a varied types of greens.. that is what the two cars would do already.. and in both experiments and the superman issue what we find is (we already know that radiation of photons, electrons, positrons etc. already different speeds from eachother and they differ due to lots of reasons in speed especially when their types of spinnings are added and we say these are types of lights in deed and at all!! ) degrees and spins change trillions of things all of a sudden.. be it on a peripherial global surface of an atom or resonating bowing spectral area of an atom.. or atoms contracting eachother: contacting and intracting.. formulas are contracting patterns.. so the contact and interact parts must always be in the pulse and mass theoratization of what is of a light beam. .. The results of interactions does not mean the contract always.. how about the any real contact? Is light a pulse or particle? How do these make up the compound? _I think pulse changes the speed of every particle. Because it is what can divide or compact space, pace and speed_ . .. .. Had superman spin arround all atoms of the globe and of theirs of the very centrillions of electrons' backwards.. and himself's.. and what ever more the recepie could've ever have more of..: Ookkayy! That could've been a well configured and powered a time travel.. because you just like RE!turn you RE!pulse everything but must be configured exactly as that you'd play your record backwards.. so you need pure pulse and preconfiguration! .. PULSAR! PULSAR! PULSAR! .. CDs versus Records! Bringme my black analog records or make an ultimately black CD.. Per-fects blackholes needed! .. PULSAR! PULSAR! PULSAR! .. Timing is preconfigured a thing.. local time travels could've been possible.. as least of possiblity as that people of 70-80 years ago could have made CDs because we in our personalities endure a time travel from yesterday to today from today to tomorrow: at least informative time travels are possible for we cannot particularize pulse! .. LASTLY: Repetitionally: we already know that radiation of photons, electrons, positrons etc. already different speeds from eachother and they differ due to lots of reasons in speed especially when their types of spinnings are added and we say these are types of lights in deed and at all!!... _And.. This is time travel contract in every living being!_ .. But more we have is pulse that we are pre/pro-vided and can have it gained regulatedly and even regularly: 5 times a prayer! Yearly and weekly special days and nights.. Take your time everyone! In being a person of yesterdays, tomorrows and todays.. we witness the roots of and initials of time travel in ourselves but are hopeless of growing it just like a mom about to give birth is hopeless of eating and the baby is missing utmostly too.. of lots of things.. and even cannot get born and even the mummy dies due to low movement and malnutrition. Salaat is an existencial feed, update and recorrection and is an utmost CONTRACT predefined for a real existencial task and its achievement. Take your time. Have it well.."overall time DÉHR" is The only God doing, willing, making, ruling judging severely really as these all. And does whatever he wishes. TV: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b76ahpd6mdW1dI0.html

This dream scanner/player could definitely prove if OBE (out of body experiences) are real or just another dream, and also it would be so interesting linking this to NDE (near death experiences) when people "dream" of walking in a tunnel of light, i can think of many good used of this "player"

Well, my dreams often have nonsensical plots, sudden cutting between unrelated scenes, bizarre dialogue, pointless characters, and boobs. Unfortunately, they only occasionally have explosions. I was so close.

Amazing! Exciting! How many things I wanted to know apart from spiritual answers are now being answered by science, yet not necessarily denying the fact of the reality of the spirit. Actually I feel confident that with so many things being proved or theorized, like the string theory, for example, would lead to the understanding that behind matter, subtle or gross, there is something else that gives it life, intelligence, etc., and that works through the brain, according to the degree of conditioning that the spirit has in this world.

Ah cool to think that some day you could watch your own dreams would be great! Dreaming of loved ones that have gone on or lost loves rekindled would be wonderful. Hopefully you would be able to pick and choose those dreams that are pleasant to review unless there was a need to recall a nightmare. At any rate this dream catcher idea is really amazing.

This is all very interesting. The big question is "Why" would we want to be able to do these things. I suppose being able to fix and cure "problems" with a push of the button is always a seductive goal, and brings us closer to our Creator in a way. I just hope we do not lose our humanity in this process.

I would fuckin love to be able to watch my dreams again. Would I want anyone else to see them? That depends. A lot of people couldn't stomach some of the shit I dream about. It fascinates me, how my brain even comes up with the shit. I've had some badass dreams. I also think the whole, curing depression part of this video, is remarkable.

We could get to the point where we can record our dreams right? I wonder if later we could imagine movies, cartoons etc, and record it. Basically we would be creating any kind of movie without the required budget for a movie today. It may be stupid, but i wonder.

When I was a kid I use to always think that it would be cool to have some type of technology that we put on our heads in order to watch dreams or what someone was thinking about on a screen and watch it like tv. Seems like it may actually be possible one day. It’s crazy to think about how I kinda “saw into the future”. haha! Technology is awesome.

... and never do something else in my life again, as what I dream in a few minutes of sleep might be hours and days full of details. It often takes me longer to write down what I have dreamt than it took me to dream it. I have got an immense collection of dreams (and will grow and grow) but I would not want to sit and watch them all the time, I life to do other things.
