In this video, I unbox the latest sword in my collection, and this time it's the hand forged 1045 carbon steel katana as used by Michonne in The Walking Dead! This one has all the detail you would expect to see on the official TV version of the sword.
Join me as I compare my first Michonne sword to this latest addition to my memorabilia collection.
The official licensed AMC version costs around £300
The unofficial hand forged carbon steel sharp version as featured in this video retails between £79 and £99. REMEMBER.. There are other blunt versions out there at similar prices, this is the sharp version and must be handled with care!
The budget blunt straight one retails from only £20.
UNFORTUNATELY... The retailer I bought these swords from has gone out of business.
Sharp version:
Excellent replica with full symbols & design
Hand Forged 1045 carbon steel blade
Curved blade
Leather finish to scabbard/sheath/strap
Total length sheathed: 1040mm
Total length unsheathed: 1020mm
Blade length : 678mm
Very sharp
Unfortunately the online retailer I purchased this sword from, is no longer in business.
PLEASE NOTE: With the exception of this live blade katana and a few others, most of the other sword memorabilia on my channel are non live blades (blunt, not sharp) and are legal to own. They are purely for memorabilia display purposes.
This Heroes Katana is also legal to buy and own from retailers, however, you need to be at least 18 years of age to purchase one, and you would have to produce official identification to retailers, who will carry out checks on your I.D. in order to sell you any sword, live blades or not. (Applies to UK retailers).
THE LAW in general in the UK regarding a Sword/Katana:
ANY sword with a curved blade over 50cm is now banned from sale, import, trade or transfer in the UK. This includes Persian Talwars, Military Cavalry swords, some Fantasy swords, Katanas and many other types of swords unless specifically exempted.
EXEMPTIONS:
•Members of historical re-enactment groups which hold a Public Liability Certificate.
•Members of a Martial Arts club which hold a Public Liability Certificate.
•Use for authorised Theatrical / Film use.
•All Swords over 100 years old.
•Samurai Swords made before 1954.
•Samurai Swords made in Japan at any time using the traditional forging technique. HAND FORGED SWORDS! Just like the one in this video.
As of 1st August 2008 a 2nd amendment was made to this legislation adding the following exemptions:
•Where only swords made using ‘the traditional technique’ in Japan were exempt, this has now been widened to cover swords made anywhere in the world “according to traditional methods of making swords by hand” namely.. HAND FORGED SWORDS! Just like the one in this video.
