The bourbon wine. Just bought both and tried neck to neck. The bourbon is more fuller and smooth in the mouth. More delicate and has been my go to gift bottle to my family. Finally i bought one myself after many years and am glad to drink it at home instead of at a random bar.

Sour mash feels so feathery light, yet full of flavor, and dangerously drinkable. It was a pleasant departure from chasing just bourbon.

Michter's US-1 Bourbon is really great and approachable bottle, with all the good classic bourbon nose and flavor notes, and one that I recommend often to anyone who wants to get into bourbon. I won a bottle of the Sour Mash but haven't cracked it yet, so something to look forward to!

I agree with you Chad. The bourbon is my preference as it has more flavor and depth to me. The higher proof helps as well.

I was very impressed by US-1 when I had it as part of the tasting at Michters. IMO very rarely do core bourbons taste like their barrel proof counterparts. Like to me, regular Elijah Craig has almost no resemblance to Barrel Proof, but Michters regular bourbon and Barrel Strength bourbon were both similar. You could tell that regular is just Barrel Strength watered down.

You guys should try the Leopold Bros BIB bourbon. It has a higher malt content than most bourbons. Fantastic bottle. 64% corn, 21% malted barley, 15% Abruzzi rye

2:17 A good while back - a year? more? - I had a bottle of Buffalo Trace White Dog, mash bill #1. Of course being unaged it only had the flavors of the grain (it was good, though, and it's the closest thing I've ever had to genuwine corn likker 🙂). I mention that because I was wondering how being grain forward would indicate youth - and then the memory of that White Dog answered the question for me. 🙂

I like all the Michter's core line up but man o' man I wish they would release a bottled in bond. I know their low barrel entry proof gives them more flavor at a lower proof point but having tasted some of their barrel proof products (at stupid price points) leaves me pining for more. Seems like they could make an awesome BiB at a fair price (not 1924 pricing).

I’ve only tried the Michter’s Sour Mash, and it wasn’t for me at all, had a very grainy astringent taste. I almost drain poured it. Their standard lineup is priced pretty high for some low proof small batch whiskeys. Based on my experience with the Sour Mash, I’d try others at a bar, but buying another Michter’s bottle just to try something else in the lineup…unlikely. For $40-50, a lot better options out there

i had always heard the sour mash used 2nd fill barrels and thats why it cant be called bourbon, but you hear everything...

It doesn’t have a dominant grain. It’s neither 51% corn or 51% rye. That’s why it can’t be called Bourbon or Rye. It’s kind of equal parts of both with some malted barley.

In general, yes, we are. The wide-eyed freshness of it does wear off after a while, like the first excitement of waiting in line to get an L.E. for example, does seem to leave you after a while.
