Lol, check out the cold start videos on my own cars that I did, especially the Mazda 626 one :D In -25*C/-13*F my old crappy phone kept dying due to the cold and I had to walk around with a 10m/33ft long extension cord and a charger plugged into it hahahahah

To be honest, I have to agree with new diesels being extremely good at cold starts. I have a 1.6TDCi (HDI) 16 valve 109HP in my Focus mk2 and the lowest temperature I attempted to start it up was -17°C. Maybe not that extreme as -30°C but it didn't even hesitate, started just as normal. But I heated the plugs several times and also added an antigel additive to the fuel the day before, as I knew it was going to be cold. I also think it's the matter of oil used, because older cars tend to use 10W and newer tend to use 5W or even 0W.

Ideally a heater core in the oilpan too. Its common feature in Nordic countries. Starting car without this and thin enough oil at temps lower than -30 degrees is incredibly harmful even to petrol engines, diesel engines have even harder time with this. I seen many people try cold starts without having proper oil in and just tortured the engine that didnt sound healthy when it started. This diesel started really well and doesnt run too rough after it gets going.

11:37 I feel bad for that Mitsubishi having to try and pump a 10W-40 oil at -30C. Ouch! Give it some 0W-40 or at least 5W-40!
@Kacpa2 Жыл бұрын
Yeah 10W-40 at -30 is outright stupid, its already quite thick of an oil in temperatures above 0C. It really should have 0W-40.

And it is _trying_ to circulate it, but failing to do so. Takes like almost a minute for the low oil pressure light to go out.

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty/Cherokee with 2.8L diesel. The block heater quit working this season and it is a horribly hard thing to access. There is rust due to all the road salt. Dealer warned me a lot of things could get broken and would need to remove the engine to fix everything so now I'm starting it without the heater. I cringe at the sound it makes starting at 0 F/ -17 C. It sounds like a bunch of bolts in a metal can being shaken. It always starts but it sure sounds scary.

Avoid cold start. It puts a lot of wear and tear on the engine. When the oil is cold, the oil pump has great difficulty pumping the oil. This results in most components in the engine not being lubricated.

The BMW seems legit, since I have the 2008 320d with the same engine and at least at -20C with all glow plugs working it started like it was nothing. When they don't work, thats a different story but still with only 2 working at -18C it started easily enough

Just curious why is your exhaust really low to the ground why is it not higher up in the air I mean the higher it is the deeper You can go in mud and water just curious
@Sebb747 Жыл бұрын
The exhaust being under water is no problem, doubly so when the engine is running. Even at idle, the pressure will be sufficient to keep the exhaust clean. The problem is the intake - if that takes mud or water, you're in for a bad time.

In the meantime, electric powertrans are puzzled... "Wait, what is that with powertrains having difficulties to start at low temperatures? We have no such problems..."
@nthgth Жыл бұрын
And then the liquid fueled vehicles retort "What is this severely reduced range in low temperatures? We have no such problems.. and anyway, can't you restore back to full in 5 minutes like everyone else?"
@francisgaliegue6645 Жыл бұрын
@@nthgth and the liquid fueled vehicles would be wrong. I don't know how far back in time your knowledge is, but reduction in range for a well conceived powertrain _on a car_ is less than 10% now -- and given the amount of battery a train would have, make that less than 5%, if that. Plus, I am sorry to announce to you that it is perfectly possible to have batteries with charging powers in excess of 20 MW. A train is using around 2 MW to keep moving, which means you spend only a tenth of the time charging vs operating. And do show me a Diesel tank on a train being filled in 5 minutes... Ah, and yeah, the US are retards when it comes to train infrastructure anyway. Here in Europe, more than 70% of rail lines have overhang electricity (it's more than 90% in France). So you do not even need that large a battery here. Want it or not, even for trains, electric powertrains are the future.
