Did we FINALLY make it to Japan? (Taiwan to Okinawa on our DD462)

Welcome back to the boat series! We flew back to Taiwan to get our Diesel Duck 462 to Japan. We spent about 4 days in northern Taiwan to do a bunch of little things to the boat, and prepare for our journey to Japan. Steve's old Navy buddy (Dennis) joined us for this leg of the trip, making our crew count at 3 this time. There was a lot of work to be done before departure, but we made it happen within the timeline we set out for (yay!).
We initially planned to be at sea for 2 whole days, but it ended up being longer. Do we even make it Japan?
Hope you enjoy the video. 😊
My content this month while away is a little bit mixed up, so expect to see a video from home (Canada) in the next week, but I will also post as much current stuff as I can, as internet permits. I bought a data SIM card, but it doesn't work very well and I've run out of Telus data! 🤪
M💕

I was in the US Navy and did 6 years sea duty, 10 years total. I miss being at sea. Watching this brought back fond memories of being on the open ocean. My first ship, the USS Towers DDG-9 was home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us. We celebrated Veterans day here in the US. Thank you to all my brothers and sisters for your service and welcome home.

That’s a lovely sentiment. They’ve made the lives of so many animals better… some in great measure and some by just giving a quick hello and a little love. The bit where they give him a bath and a new blanket brought a tear to my eye.

The Las Vegas casino music at the end, ala 1960s, is great. My dad was in the Canadian navy (WW2 ) and he said guys would be sick for 2 weeks on convoy crossings, but still had to do their jobs all under the stress of U boats, icebergs and hunger. Great video.

The passive stabilizers on Pelagic are commonly known as "paravanes". The same system is also called "flopper stoppers" but that's only when the vessel is at anchor and you deploy them to lessen the roll. Hope this helps.

Nice as always. For the oil, you may want to look into a peristaltic pump. You can pick one up (relatively) cheaply. I use one for oil, coolant and (small scale) fuel transfers. As with anything though, you get what you pay for. Fair winds, following seas,

Oscillating multi-tool is the thing you needed for the rudder indicator. Far more of a precise and versatile cutting tool than a jig saw, angle grinder or dremel. It can make square cuts unlike the angle grinder or dremel, but it can also do plunge cuts unlike the jigsaw.
@aspees
@aspees 9 ай бұрын
It’s super common on a boat to have locations where you can’t get a tool(even a jig saw) into for cutting a simple hole. This is where a hacksaw blade is magic. Buy a high quality bimetal blade. Either wrap part of the blade with duct tape or make a handle out of wood. Use it on the pull stroke like a Japanese hand saw. Cuts thru composite like butter.

Also growing up in 2 different houses. My father lived in the Florida Keys, and with many different boats. The most memorable boat was a 52 footer, her name was the WestWind. And she too had flooper-Stoppers plus a crows nest. And I also had to have the graveyard/3rd shift on WATCH. What really helped me way back when, when out at sea for a month and half was my Sony Walkman, yes I'm showing my age. But Music, fresh air and watch the Horizon. It works.!!! Oh yeah, plenty of Freshwater. Love you videos

Hey Mich, Love these videos. I've been out on a 35' long fishing boat 5 or 6times in my life. I have always felt very much at home on the sea. The last time I was out fishing was 15 years ago. They day started off a little rainy with choppy seas. Everyone caught a fish or two. Later in the day it got very ruff. The bell in the wheel house was ringing up a storm. These bells are designed only to ring if the boat rolls so many degrees port or starboard. The ringing indicates the boat has roiled to dangerous degree, indicating the ship is in danger of foundering. That afternoon the bell was ringing like there was a celebration at the local Catholic Church. One our friends was leaning over the rails getting sick when the boat began to slide down the side of a large wave when the gunnel our friend leaning over smacked hard into an incoming way and he suddenly was going over the side. The waves were so large that other large boat that were fishing near by would disappear down in the trough and only reappear when they came out of the troughs and we would go down into the next trough. Must have been 15ft. swells. Anyway, my brother ran over to our friend who was going over the gunnel and grabbed him around the waist and saved his life. It was so rough that if the guy had gone overboard we would have lost sight of him in seconds. Anyway, I never got sick. I never felt afraid. I actually enjoyed the entire trip. It was that day I realized I must have been a sailor of the seven seas, in another life. The entire experience made me feel alive. Fair winds and calm seas Mich, Alan from NC
