Mick Herron's Slough House novels have proved so popular that a TV adaptation is on its way with an all-star cast led by Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb. As we celebrate the latest book, Slough House, as our Thriller of the Month, we asked Mick about the character of Lamb and if he has a favourite amongst the 'slow horses'.

Incredible series, I just finished The Secret Hours, and I’m in awe. Also, very excited for JKC to appear in the show.

I have only recently come to Mick Herron's wonderful books. Brilliant dialogue, especially from Jackson Lamb. Great to come across a new and original author.

Same here. And to think he was an unassuming copy editor before revealing his true talent.

I got the feeling from the earlier books that they were meant to be the River Cartwright novels. They may have grown beyond that but I do still see him as the most fundamentally identifiable character in many ways

I am reading these at a blistering pace (unfortunately for me, I'll be done too soon). I love the writing, suspenseful and laugh out loud funny! Also, good job Apple TV, loved the show.

Herron is a master of language, and I wish that we could step aside aside terming him a spy or thriller writer. If nothing else, his descriptions of weather and things such as dusk and night can be offered as superior to any other writer's. I've just ordered 'Nobody Walks', which is not part of the Slough House series, but does include characters from the series, including the engimatic J D Coe and something about why he is (was) as he was once was. I gather the next book is 'Bad Actors' which will, apparently, appear in early 2022. I can't wait.

Yes agree, you get the impression any subject could be covered. Particularly loved the paragraph from the perspective of the dusk creeping into Slough House in one novel.

Thanks for this. Here's a writer who can also talk as intelligently as the characters he creates. A rare talent. And great books.

It always amazes me that novelists don't understand why their novels take off. I loved 'Slow Horses' because it was so beautifully written - so well crafted - like a dancer or an athlete, the prose was elegant and muscular, flexible and lyrical. As the series progressed, I found that literary standard seemed to dissolve, as if some publisher had urged Herron to write scenes for another 'shoot your problem' sort of boring movie/airport novel. I wish he'd ignore such advice for more 'action' and be as stubborn as Lamb in sticking to his own standards. Loyalty to your craft, I suppose.

How wonderful to stumble across this interview! I love the Slough House books and have both read them and listened to them on Audible where the books are narrated by the superb Sean Barrett. The characters are multi faceted and I feel I know them all personally so I am not sure if I will watch them on tv. I have such strong personal visualisations of each character - especially Jackson Lamb. If you haven’t yet discovered these books you are in for a rare treat. Read them slowly to savour Mr Herron’s brilliant writing skills.

I got the same impression from the first 10 mins of the first novel. Flawed heroes, gritty realism etc. Definitely more humour in Herron's work. I did find humour in Le Carre, but it was usually in the mannerisms of the characters rather than what they said. There are lots of clever one line answers in the Slough House series, but they don't seem as corny or unrealistic as a certain silver screen Intelligence Officer's.

Thoroughly addicted in two weeks' time. Jackson Lamb is the un-cancelable inner beast that galls our modern censorious culture. The inner dialog method of expositing each character's narrow slice of the story shows an astonishing understanding of the broken people who are characters in this enthralling dystopia. Who knew spying could be so funny while simultaneously being tragic and despicable.

The music track in this is horrible. Herron doesn’t think he’s revealed how Lamb turned into the grotesque that he is? I think he’s been very clear about what broke Lamb, albeit spread over multiple books, including the latest. Plus there’s the implication that Lamb keeps going because he’s disgusted at what MI5 became and is becoming. With the latest book we’ve got hints at a possible endgame. I hope book 9 continues the overall series improvement -b this was the best so far.

shirley. shirley is my very very VERY most favorite. while she is a ticking time bomb, thanks for giving her the opportunity to approach a bit of self awareness. the cartwright boy is my least favorite. difficulty in identifying a strong core. catherine, of course, is the mother. roddy. waiting on a tad more growth there. lamb. hmm. tough one. it would have to be an epic back story leading up to his current oral-explosive unfiltered manner of interacting with the world and everyone in it. perhaps best leave that alone. good to see catherine beginning to challenge his verbal cruelty a bit more. well. all in all, a grand dysfunctional family...not much superficial caring but underneath there is love of sorts, there is protectiveness, there is linked arms against the world.

Having now heard all the novels (Sean Barrett is as perfect for Slough House as Nigel Planer for Pratchett's novels), I think Lamb is like the fat kid at school who is really, really bright and has the heart of a Galahad, is desperately in love with the 'alpha' girl and knows that no matter how well he loves her no matter how clever or how honourable he is, she'll never see it. Not like Don Quixote...who was deluded. Lamb just learned it was never going to happen, and coped with that. Whether it's his country, or Catherine Standish - never love requited. How dos an honourable *and* highly intelligent person cope? Faces facts. All the facts. Everyone's facts. I think he's a positively Shakespearean - even Aeschylean (?) - character. Still hate the 'action' parts of every novel, though.
