We went down to the picket at Euston station to speak to RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch.
He chats to us about the independents and Greens challenging Labour at the election, Nigel Farage's bid to get a seat in the Commons, and the impending destruction of the Conservative party.

@@heathercooper6043I lived in the 1970s If there were union bully boys that because members were lazy about turning up to meetings and voting them out. My dad organised fellow workers and hustled them along to a meeting and voted out the bullies by the time he retired all was great. After he left the bullies came back because nobody turned up to keep them out. Don’t blame unions blame lazy workers who don’t service democracy.

@@heathercooper6043without the unions of old, people would still be worked to death, abused, exploited and grovelling for bits of cake. Now the unions are weakened we're going back to that with sanctions on poorer people, zero hours contracts, fire and rehire, lack of decent housing and disintegration of public services.

There is absolutely NO reason why nationlising the railways would lead to a worse service. Instead of money flooding out of the rail system and into the hands of investors it would be put back into the rail service, lowering prices and improving the service. I'm all for it.

In theory yes but in reality? I would include all transport under one umbrella. The cost of transport should be free to all, subsidised by tax.
@archvaldor

I think people miss the point with rail nationalization. It is happening whether any one likes it or not. The private companies running rail are folding and the government has to take it over-then it becomes apparent this is less costly than private subsidy so even the Tories don't want to put it for tender. You cannot stop rail nationalization any more than you can stop the tide.

@@williamsulman2646 Possibly in some places. My personal belief is that FPTP encourages a toxic political environment where parties are encouraged to undermine and trash talk each other, whereas PR more encourages the positive formulation of policy. This is because with a winner takes all system all you have to do to win is make people scared of your opponents whereas with PR they can still pick up second or third preference votes. I think PR encourages politicians to work harder to come up with real solutions because they instead have to attract us more with things we actually want. I personally won't vote for a candidate who isn't local or whose party doesn't support PR. I don't know where Farage stands on PR but, regardless of his views, if I lived in Clacton I wouldn't vote for him because he's not local and has publicly said that he doesn't really like being there. I would question his commitment to the local area and his sincerity.

The Scottish Government took Scotrail, which covers all of Scotland, back into public hands. It’s not at all complicated. The service is being improved. Peak fares have been abolished, for an experimental period. New rail stations have been opened, some the closed over 50 years ago. The opposition always bite back with, how much will it cost ? Really what has happened in Scotland is that the people are back in charge and the profit element has been removed.

They dont have to spend, they can just decline to renew contracts with the companies. They can alos refuse to subsidise them anymore. Without subsidies the rail companies wont be abel to pay dividends and their share prices will quickly fall off a cliff.
