After letting the hydro system sit dormant all winter its time to get it up and running. This micro hydro turbine uses 150 feet of head pressure down 1100 feet of 2" pipe. The pressure at the PMA is around 65psi. Depending on the amount of water going to the system there is 100w to 500w of power being made. This power feeds two grid tie limiter inverters at my house to reduce the power bill to the grid.

Seth, Maybe install a "winter bypass"? To help you startup in the spring snd to flush all the debris/snail shells out of the line? I can envision a Y or a T just above your shutoff, and a smaller shutoff to divert the sludge on your first startup of the season perhaps before your pressure gauge or just after.

I do have a 3/4" ball valve right before the pma. I could connect a short hose there to help flush debris. Perhaps a future video.

@3:39 As I have told others, you don't need to lose any head at the drum near the water intake. You need to fit an air stand. The air stand is a vertical pipe that goes straight up from the drum, it has an open top end. The top end needs to be as high as the water intake filter. Of course, you will need to seal up the overflow and all other fittings will need to be watertight. All the air from the turbulent water rises up out the top of the air stand. This will keep air out of the penstock while allowing you to utilize all of the head available at the site.

Thanks for sharing your system setup. I have been considering using a 2 inch poly pipe but all the other videos I have seen use 4 inch pipe. It is much easier to use poly pipe and 2 inch is the largest I van find. I don't know how much fall I will have but will try to use the GPS on my phone to find out. I would like to figure out a simpler electrical setup since all that gear you have must have cost a pretty penny.

Happy to see your Micro-Hydro up and running again. Your Unistrut braces for the barb connectors would be an easy place to attach a rebar anchor to minimize how much the penstock slides downhill each year. You might also consider adding 10-20ft extra penstock at the top, and a flat 'S' curve on the ground near the barrel, that would take up the slack of winter contraction of the plastic pipe.
@LandtoHouse

The wires coming out of the PVC LB should have a dripping loop which goes lower than the opening so that water doesn't enter the LB and fill the conduit underneath.

If you don't wnat to break the handles on PVC ball valves, make a tool that turns BOTH handles from a piece of PVC that will fit over the top of the valve you want to turn. Make it about a foot or two long and cross drill it at the top so a piece of rebar or EMT conduit will fit making a handle that will give you better leverage than the PVC handles. Cheap as they are you can make one for every location you have a PVC ball valve. Also next time you clean out a a nozzle, be sure and flush the supply line!!! Otherwise it will just clog up again. Hopefully you took the other comments to heart and replaced the bearings in that turbine. As for your water exit problem, you need to open up the bottom of the box and let the water get away from the wheel. I haven't seen any other turbines that are set up to contain all the water and try to force it into a drain pipe right at the turbine wheel. Give it a foot or so and then try to pipe it off.

Joey, I was in Corwynn back in the early 80's. Stayed at the Owain Gwyndlar hotel, which at the time was run by an absolute gentleman by the name of Corrie Williams. I'll guarantee I've misspelled all the names except Mr. Williams', so I hope you'll forgive me for that. A buddy and I had come up from the American air base in Suffolk to fish, but owing to some bad info from the base Rod and Gun Club, we missed the trout season by a week. We stayed for a couple of days in spite of that, and had a wonderful time. We hitchhiked up to Bala Lake and camped over night. What a beautiful place. Mr. Williams treated us like family when we returned. Here in my home state of North Carolina, you'll find a lot of Welsh names like Morgan , Davis, and Jones, mostly concentrated in the mountainous western end of the state where I am from. I often wonder if perhaps the immigrants from North Wales pushed inland, found our mountains reminded them of home, and just settled there. All speculation of course, but you never know. I'll never forget my trip to North Wales and the hospitality we were shown. All the best to you and yours, sir.

I know the round about cost of everything up to the "turbine generator", and I also do not know how much each one of those produces. But we all know that every little amp helps.

You need to use some unscented Aqua Net Hairspray. Lol I realize how that sounds but I bet you'll have little to no problem with that pipe coming off. It doesn't take much just a little spray on the fitting let it sit for 30 seconds put the clamp pipe back together and it'll be glued. But it's still comes apart if you loosen the clamp.

Hey Seth, I'm thinking about purchasing a ram pump. Im going to run a siphon over my dam for my pond and have it fill a bucket that will have more pipe come out the bottom (just about 9 feet of drop) to feed the pump, I will run it back up the dam and feed a barrel like the kne in this video. Do you think it will work if not i would like some tips please and thank you.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 10 ай бұрын
Hello. If you are siphoning water out I would make sure there is plenty of water going into the pond from the source. Siphoning can pull lots of water out. Once you know the pond will stay full you should be good to go. It is wise to siphon to a bucket then use pipe from the bucket. This results in a stronger pressure wave.
@TylerHVAC
@TylerHVAC 10 ай бұрын
@@LandtoHousealso to help the pond out I will have and over flow pipe go into an overflow pipe, luckily it is only used when the main is clogged. Any idea how to conserve some of the water coming out the waste valve?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 10 ай бұрын
The waste valve is pretty much gonna use a consistent amount of water period you can tilt the valve so that the pump closes with less pressure and that will use less water. But not much can be done to reduce the waste water output.

Way cheaper than connecting to grid in semi remote areas, let alone no-grid areas. Friend of mine was quoted $60K to connect to grid in 1982. They went off grid for about $5K then (mixed solar and mini-hydro, with a marine wind turbine (one of the ones you see on 30-50” yachts). They have been saving a couple of grand every year since then, let alone the $55 THOUSAND dollars (or so) they saved up front. The only upgrades have been new batteries and inverter in the early 90s and new batteries again about 5years ago.
