Micrometer Screw Gauge - Zero Error | Introduction to Physics
A micrometer screw gauge is used to measure small lengths ranging between 0.10 mm and 25.00 mm.
This instrument can be used to measure diameters of wires and thickness of steel plates to an accuracy of 0.01 mm.
The accuracy of the micrometer screw gauge is also affected by zero errors.

at 2:30 i think reading should be 4.5 + 0.23=4.73 not 5.5!

2:31 how can a main scale show reading upto 0.1 mm? This main scale is supposed to be a metre scale right? And it can't show readings less than a mm

What if number is between 15 to 20? the line at 17... So zero error is +0.17?

Did you make a mistake on the correct reading? Isn't it 4.5 mm on the main scale? The reading us NOT EVEN at 5!!! Pls don't confuse the learners. Thank you.

In screw gauge least count = pitch/no of HSD Ur screw gauge head scale div is 50... So least count = 1mm/50 = 0.02mm

What if the reading on the thimble scale is exactly 25? Then how do we know whether its positive or negative zero error?

That can’t happen. If zero error is so much as even 15-20 then screw gauge is deemed useless. You won’t get question in exams saying this

Zero error is a systemic error, but not random error. Taking mean will not help to reduce the error.
