In this video, Jeremy Cioara covers the BGP questions you should find answers to before you call the carrier. He’ll also discuss how BGP works in a real-world environment. You’ll find answers to many of the common questions and decision points people have when dealing with BGP.
Jeremy discusses some of the most crucial questions you should find answers to when dealing with BGP before calling the carrier. Some of these include whether you should use a private, autonomous system or whether you should receive full, partial, or default routes.
He’ll discuss factors you should consider when dealing with authentication between BGP neighbors, then delve into source interfaces and blackhole servers. Jeremy will wrap up the video by talking about what information you want listed under your point of contact data for the Arin record. You’ll typically want to create a service account that isn’t tied to any one employee to provide maximum organizational stability and continuity.

I’d just like to add to the list. Have your AS Set and what IRR you are registered with ready to provide. Also, make sure to get community lists from your upstream Provider. Also, if you are going to use LAG, pre agree on protocols to use. Also, decide before hand if you want to use BDF. Oh yeah, use HE (Hurricane Electric) religiously as a resource so you know what upstream carriers your provider is using and what IXs they are using. Don’t buy from HE though… they will tempt you with really low pricing but their peering is highly contended and you will experience packet drops to some or many of their upstream transits and peers. Oh no… I can keep going… OK I’ll leave it there.
