I live in Shanghai and am using an NT1. It functioned well at the beginning and failed after several months. I guessed this was due to the humid weather here in Shanghai and blew the mic with my hairdryer. Magically it worked again. Given the summer heat here, I think the moisture/humidity is the only cause instead of the temperature.

So this video helped me so much after receiving my 3rd pair of pencil mics that seems to have so much popping and white noise and barely able to pick up the acoustic guitar. After a rainy day they stopped working, 2 hours of brainstorming i de humidified the room for a few hours and they worked again. Still sounded crap but they worked so much better than when the room was at 85% humidity. Time to tell UA

I've used the soft heat of a light bulb at distance, particularly with oktava 012 SD capsules, as well as other LD capsules.

Interesting to keep in mind. Been leaving the mics out on the mount - and humidity gets very high here in summer.

Microphone Boutique, my greetings, I have a 2006 mxl microphone that stops recording the voice, if I heat the capsule with a heat gun or blower, and connect it to the pc it works while it is hot, but when it cools down it stops sounding = record the voice, could it be that I have to replace the capsule or is it another problem with the microphone, thanks. ?? And if it was the capsule, which capsule should I buy to replace the old one ?

Unrelated question. Using Oktava 012 - each capsule has the cardioid pattern marked on a specific spot on the capsule. Is this specific to the pattern? In other words if the symbol is on top that pattern is as in the drawing. IF the mic is rotated does the cardioid pattern rotate with it, or does it stay as it was as in the drawing with symbol on top? Am I clear with this. We are streaming our Ru - Orthodox church service - the high domes - choir upstairs, priest below and in front - I have the Oktavas mounted side by each on a bar with the Rode arm. Mics are pointed forward towards the Altar and choir is about 15 ft behind. If one mic with symbol on top captures that upper dome range, the second mic rotated symbol down - would it capture the floor area? Any input would be appreciated. Igor

That position doesn't matter. The address side direction matters. Also there's not a big difference between the cardioid and supercardioid, it's actually how much of the back is filtered from the capsule. The capsules themselves are pretty identical, so even though they have different sounds the pickup patterns aren't that radically different, for example I like using the omnis in an XY pattern, even though you would think the cardioids would be better, there's a tonal difference, so if you have the three capsule set definitely try them. However I think you're right to use these mics in an XY pair.

@@microphoneboutique Thank you for the reply and this helps. We are using the cardioids for now and are getting very good results now that the area of capture has been found. A friend has omni capsules and that will be our next project.

Many thanks for this! I have a mic that makes no sound but a buzzing noise, then a few minutes after turning on the gain knob, it goes away... Weird. That could be humidity?

Can we use heat to dry one out?
@microphoneboutique2 жыл бұрын
You can try, I've had limited success. I wouldn't add heat as much as save every one of those dehumidifying pouches you get in a box, then throw the microphone in those pouches into a box together it may suck the moisture out. But oftentimes it's just trapped inside and there may be some damage.

Got the same mic, what I do is use a hair dryer at the softest, slightly warm setting, for like 5 seconds (I've been advised not to do it, but it works for me) and it becomes usable for a few hours. I'm guessing guess humidity has already taken its toll on them, and we need to get the capsule replaced? the same happened to an old AKG p420 I have, and it too works for a few hours after a few seconds of drying. my at2020 seems to be much more resistant to humidity, as I think the capsule is made of a slightly less sensitive material, but the sound of it is also slightly less detailed for my taste.
