its really easy to overlook the room you're recording in as well. especially with condenser mics. i've helped quite a few friends who had decent gear but just needed to turn off the AC and record later in the evening when theres less traffic outside or hang some heavy blankets behind the singer.

My band uses in ear monitors. we use mics aimed at the crowd so we can hear them and so we can hear each other.. Those IEMs isolated pretty well!!
@NicD5150
@NicD5150 4 жыл бұрын
Mics pointing at the crowd in live shows also often are for adding some ambiance and crowd noise in IEM mixes, which helps make IEM feel less "oppressive" and closed, and allows the performers to actually hear the crowd and interact with them without having to remove an earbud. In this day and age, with disk space being super cheap and getting a split of every sources is easy thanks to network audio and tools such as DVS (where you don't need a recording console, a splitter, additional pres and converters and all to get signal into your DAW), pretty much each and every show gets recorded anyway. Plus it allows engineers to use them for "virtual soundcheck" and don't really even need the artist to actually do a soundcheck anymore, especially with direct to desk solutions such as the AxeFX, Kemper and Helix being used A LOT for live shows these days. Recall the console, play back yesterday's performance (routing the DAW back into the console), and you're in business, the artist can rest, do PR or whatever else they want or have to.

LOL....my good buddy who is guitarist did an amazing take with a couple of 58's duct taped to the sweet spot in the room from the roof . Running into an old Ross board then into a 4 head VCR. Sounded better than the $3000 demo we played for months later. I've learned a ton from him and this channel...Thanks Warren. Merry Christmas 🎄

I recorded bands in a long and narrow room when I was a in my teens. I would place the one microphone at one end then place the instruments where they sounded best.

I gots me a question. When you track vocals through a compressor, what settings-ie ratio, attack and release times-do you typically use, and how much gain reduction do you typically aim for; especially since, in all likelihood, additional compression will be added later during the mixing phase? Whenever I track vocals through a compressor, I'm always wondering if I'm adding enough or too much gain reduction.

Hi Warren. I have a way of recording a live band in the one room that has zero spill. (Bare in mind this is in a studio with plenty of mics and preamps but only the one room with no booths) We set up everything in the room, get the amp sounds, mic and gain in everything. When we're ready to record, we switch the amps off and monitor the DI's with a simple sansamp plugin so it sounds a bit more amp-like. When we're have the takes and I've comped them, I simply reamp them back out to the amps that are already dialed in and record them and the room mics. This way not only do i get clean drum tracks, i can also have the room sound on every guitar track too so it sounds like everyone's in the same room.

Nicely done tribute to Aspen Warren. It is incredible the quality of audio gear to price ratio these days! I'm lucky to have a few nice mics, but amazed how good a standard Shure SM 57 is, even for vocals in the studio! I've still got mine purchased new in 1977! still being used today to mic my amp when playing live!

Nice mention of the Rode NT1! That's what I use for acoustic guitar and vocals. I wanted to upgrade and found a massive list of microphones with audio samples to compare. To my ears, the samples from the NT1 sounded better than - or as good as - microphones 10 times more expensive. Conclusion, I really don't have to spend any more money on another mic.

I replaced an old Delta1010 breakout box which i got sent here to Ireland from U.S. The old one had been under permanent power for pretty much 10 years (i replaced the caps about 6 years ago) and i am only issuing or for streaming. Super happy with the "new" 2nd hand one, Windows can use it for its stupid DirectX drivers and Cubase gets full reign over my Steinberg UR824.

I remember recording a 3 band show, two bands the singer was playing guitar so I could just put my mic on the stand with the mic for the PA. However, the middle band had a singer that wanted to move around, and I did not have a mic splitter, so I ended up putting a mic on his wedge that was mostly getting his voice. Was not totally terrible!

For rehearsal room recordings I would go with one large and 2 small dia condenser. The large diaphragm quite in the middle of the room, but slightly off centers towards bass and drums, probably knee high, faced by bass drum and bass cab from the same direction and distance would be awesome, the small diaphragms probably ear high but depends, just out of the way of any direct sound impact unless you want to. PA and guitar cabs need to be elevated, cabs also could be slightly facing upwards. Throw a bunch of blankets in the naked corners and hope for the best... ^^ Just be aware the more technical music gets the more technical the recording approach has to be. Have a nice weekend everyone..! ;)

In Jr High we recorded some jams in the basement with just one (probably Radio Shack, lol) mic at the other end of the small room pointed at the band. It somehow turned out reasonable balanced between the instruments, and because the basement was unfinished with concrete floors and walls, actually had a great sounding rich reverb. I guess I should have given up there!

It's like being at the coolest school, with the coolest teacher in the world! Awesome Warren! Yes, i've been recording my own bands live, in the jam room, garages etc..since the age of 15 ( in 1989 ) That natural compression on vintage ( 80's) boom boxe mics is awesome for raw punchy drums, bass and guitars! I've recorded 1 or 2 two mics in a jam room, an sm57 and an sm58 into 1998 cool edit pro many times !!!!!!! I've recently remixed some of it in presonus and it sounds real nice.... I should definetly get into recording live again! Never considered recording OTHER bands live!!! I still own plenty of recordings ( 4 years) of my high school cover band on cassettes and various formats of every other band i've played in. Rock on!

For me, I quite often use Sound Radix Pi to adjust the phase & keep the low end of my mixes tight - but I only ever put it on the kick mics. Generally works really nicely - but putting that sort of plugin on loads of things can absolutely destroy the energy of the mix! Used sparingly though, it can be ace :-) Another thing that's great for low end is a plugin called Mongoose....sums everything below a threshold into mono. So you can have huge, roomy drum rooms with the low end right down the middle.

I know the question of "what interface to get" has been asked probably thousands of times but I guess my question is: which brand offers the most in terms of included software bundling? I’m very sorry for your loss. I am wondering if a professional mic, preamps, amazing digital interface can survive the compression crunch of the still popular mp.3? I do my best to “analog” the crap out of my Cubase system but even on my best day using Eddie Kramer plug-ins I cannot capture the sound of being 4 years old and hearing Zeppelin 1 on vinyl or my first 2” tape sessions at Syncro Sound in Boston in the 90’s. How can we dial the digital even further back?

Interesting discussion. I have a Rode NT1 mic that has been moded by the incredible Michael Joly into a clone of a U87. It's an amazing mic, particularly with many of my clients, but I find it a bit too bright for my own voice & want different characters of mics for recording different instruments, so I've been looking at a Slate ML-1 VMS mic & the Mojave MA-200. Seems like the ML-1 is best option under $1500 for versatility and vocals. Would that be a sound choice, Warren? And thank you for all the awesome content you make for us! I can't keep up & have no idea how you do it all and create music!

Export tracks with automation, Not if you are exporting your tracks Bar1Beat1 style( all tracks start at the start of the song) to send to someone to mix, such as me who does not want your session, just the individual tracks. Just like consolidating tracks in PT. If someone wants the session with everything on it they ask for that. If I am asking for the tracks cause I am mixing your album, IF there is any automation on the tracks, specifically volume and PAN, I will end up fighting with it through out the processes. It can become a big hassle. So just zero the faders and pans and export out he tracks. Also ask whomever the tracks are going to, what they are expecting and wanting.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly Tim! As I was explaining if its for stems for live then, yes, create stems with all of the automation for live makes sense, however for mixing I leave everything on the tracks, plug ins etc consolidate the tracks to bar 0 and send away to the mixer! That;'s what every Professional Mixers requests these days!

I started recording in the early 2000's too. I used to run an analog mixer into my computers soundcard, ha ha! I miss the days where I had to be creative to make something good.

Warren, did you ever use the Vipre Aspen is talking about in the linked video? In the new UAD interfaces with variable impedence isn't this what they are doing (per model so it is not like you have control over it). I got an apollo x8 earlier this year and the unison pres blow my mind so I wonder if it is doing the impedence magic he is talking about

Referring to the first question, I wrote my BSc in Audio thesis on the topic of finding the best position for room microphones inside large reverberant spaces. I took about 30 impulse responses inside the space while moving the microphones and the sound source around the space. I was looking into C-80 (clarity index) for music and D-50 (definition index) to determine the clarity of the sound, (I was only recording decca tree). Looking at the EDT will determine how much Reverb you will have. Depending on the position you will have different reverberation and clarity in your room mics.

I know i want to get a Shure sm7b microphone to do my vocal recordings with, I've been using the Rode NT-USB for a while I'm now ready to go to the next level as I'm now putting together my EP. I notice that all of the professionals who are my contemporaries in the Soul Pop use this microphone usually with an Apollo twin audio interface but I have recently seen SSL have now reduced their own audio interface. I want an audio interface that is convenient for travel and to work where ever I travel to. What would you suggest?

Hi Gonzalo, I have two internal operating systems on my Mac, one has the latest that will work with Pro Tools 2019 and the other runs an older version of the OS for my Pro Tools HD system. Ultimately you should run the OS that works best with your DAW. I hope that helps?

Have you considered using a motorised MIDI controller for mixing in the box? From what I see on KZfaq, and not least on your channel, they seem to be rare. Yet people keep trying to sell them to me. Cheers, Ylan

Agree totally on mics and interfaces. It's almost impossible to buy anything bad these days. A great mic like a U87 makes it so easy to get great vocals, for instance, but I've also gotten great results with an MXL. Spend some time with mic placement, don't run into the red, and you can get great results with almost anything.

It's true, it seems like in Zeppelin, the guitars were pretty thin, the bass didn't have much high end, so the drums just took over, no wonder drummers say Bonham is great, lol!
@Producelikeapro

Indeed! I love Bonham's Drum Sound! However it's very naive to believe that it was just the sound that was what made it great! The Guitar ideas, parts and production made it work so well!
