Apochromatic and Semi-Apochromatic (Fluorite) microscope objectives are expensive. How do they compare to the cheaper Achromatic objectives?

Quite a lot to lenses also exhibit "longitudinal" chromatic aberration, meaning that things that are in front of the focal plane may exhibit a slight color shift to magenta, while things that are behind the focal plane may appear with a green cast. Just like chromatic aberration this is not as visible when looking with the naked eye but on a photo it's much more apparent and that too can mess with images of crystals or other subjects with hard contrasts and a lot of depth.

The side by side comparison was very helpful. And working distance remains an important consideration. Hoping to start getting behind the microscope soon! Great instructional video.

Great video. I wonder since chromatic aberration is caused by different wavelengths of light, can you increase any objective's resolution by using a monochrome light source? Or a filtered source to cut off some of the wavelengths?

Yes, this can be done.

Thank you very much! I really learn a lot from your videos. How do plan-achromatic objectives compare here? By the way: You can reduce or completely eliminate chromatic aberration from images in tools like Photoshop with basically a touch on a slider. There are probably less expensive or even free image editing applications which can do this, too.

Wow, thank you for the side by side comparison. I've never considered apochromatic objectives because I never felt that it is worth it. It's nice to see the difference, now I know that I'm not losing that much quality. Do you know if apochromatics in profesional environment (lab/research) are expected/default or just niche?
@MicrobehunterMicroscopy
@MicrobehunterMicroscopy Жыл бұрын
It depends entirely on the application. In routine observation (also in the lab) for fast quality checks, they might not be needed (eg checking if a sample contains contaminants etc). But for photography apochromats produce (slighty) better results.

I just found your channel! Thanks for sharing and sub! One question, I am planning to buy a microscope where I can attach my Sony mirrorless camera to. My priority is videography. If I want sharp videos, other than looking out for a good objective lens, what else do I have to pay attention to? Thanks in advance!

hello I am a new subscriber to your channel and I never had a microscope before and I just purchase olympus ch2 are there any upgrades you would suggest my plan is to use it to inspect my birds droppings mainly to make shure they stay healthy and ofcourse to look at other stuff . But sence I never had one I don't know if it was a good purchase or if I will find out in the future that its not what I will benefit from.

What software do you use on your computer for viewing through the microscope camera
@MicrobehunterMicroscopy

Depends on the camera. For the USB camera I use ToupView, for my DSLR I use the built-in Windoes camera software and/or OBSStudio (for live streams).

Thank you for your reply. Do you advise me to invest to change my achromatic plans for semi apo or apochromatic? Is it worth it?
@DP-qb1zw
@DP-qb1zw Жыл бұрын
@@ericd2215 depends on how much money you have and how much you care about a small improvement. If you are happy now, then you don't need. You can buy just one , like a 20x if you don't have a 20x, and see how much better it is. You might lose some working distance with higher quality objectives especially plan APOs. That's important if you mainly look at pond samples in well slides.

It certainly is a cheap price, about 120$. Don't expect good, higher power views since there is no substage condenser . I don't even see a diaphragm either. You might have fair views up to 200x . You really can't expect that much for such a cheap price. For that price, you could get a used, sturdy, high quality, basic student microscope like an American Optical 150 that would work well with the objectives provided.
