So in a time when Linux is getting user friendlier than ever, Steam is making ever more games playable on Linux out of the box, when Intels new GPU lineup is about to launch with heavy official Linux support and has been demonstrated to perform vastly better on Linux, that's when they decide to crank up the anti-consumer sentiment? I don't see the plan here, but you do you Microsoft.

"The was experimental banner that was not intended to be published externally and was turned off." ie. "Due to public backlash, the plan was quickly canceled for the next release and we will be retooling it for later on the roadmap." Also, this isn't the first time MS did this. They've done One Drive ads in file explore as far back as 2016. MS has toyed and rolled out ads in lots of their shit over the years. The "News and weather" update for 10 was pretty much just an ad widget pretending to be a weather feed.

I can already see the massive amounts of pirated, hacked, and cracked copies of Windows 11 hitting the internet by week 1, and by week 2 someone will have made an adblocker. I don't understand Microsoft's game plan here. Ads have already become intrusive and asinine, but when even paying for a product can't give you an escape then there's no point in paying for it.

Honestly, Windows 11 is just not worth it. Since Windows 10 you can't really block auto updates and telemetry, even with the guides over the internet, it will always find a way to call home and re-put what you removed and remove what you put on it. Also clogging your internet for the above reason cutting performance, on CPU as well. And if they ever think about adding a miner like norton, they could drop your GPU performance too. Honestly, the best way rn is to download a clean version of 8.1 and clean it off from any bloatware and telemetry and then selectively add only the useful updates, then deactivate windows update for good, forever. And that system has no way to call home because it's pre-era.

Of course you can ditch windows and use linux but... ...does Linux run most games? Nope. And don't get me started on VMs. Low and mid end laptops barely run those games on min specs with an actual system, if you want to run a system on a machine running another system and another virtual machine. That game is going to lag, if not just crash literally when launched. Yeah no. ...do all windows software for utility have a working alternative in Linux? Yes but actually no. So there's still a reason to use Windows. And I say this very sadly...

5:30 Speaking as someone who attempted to be a programmer once, that's actually as simple as setting a tooltip to contain whatever text based on which folder is open of ones they could guarantee will exist (ie the generic documents, downloads, pictures, etc under the user folder) or otherwise based on the file types that the folder contains. None of that would allow anyone or anything to "see" or more accurately log your "every move", that would be a massive waste of resources for setting something as basic as a tooltip. There are genuine concerns with Windows and data privacy, this is not one. Still, I have no interest in Microsoft trying to sell me its own properties by cluttering up the file explorer, screw that.

Just looking at the number of different linux distros, versions, etc. on this comment section, you'd have a vague idea why linux on PC never really got serious marketshare even after all the b.s. that MS has pulled over the decades. If someone could make a single Linux-based OS for the PC that requires as much setup as Android on phones (basically none for the OS, play store for the apps) or like Windows on PC (requires a bit more effort compared to Android on phones), then they'd finally get major marketshare. I guess Google has the financial might and infrastructure to make that happen. Hell, even if Google just makes a dedicated gaming OS for the PC and collaborate with major game publishers and with Nvidia+AMD, they'd capture a sizeable marketshare since they already have online office productivity apps like sheets, docs, gmail, drive, etc. anyway. Instead, Google made Stadia ☠️

I clicked the "save" icon, you know the one that looks like a floppy, expecting it to pull up a file exploreresque save dialog to choose a location since it was a new file. But no, because of UI changes (sorry, I mean improvements of course), it took a full five clicks passing me from one pane or popup to the next before I got the dialog. To think that it worked brilliantly in windows xp when I was growing up, and then they spent money, and probably not nothing, to go and redesign the whole experience to make it harder to save a file where you want it.

Never was a fan of Steve Jobs but he was correct about Microsoft having zero taste. No matter what app they come up with, it always feels super uncanny. Cortana, Xbox game bar, the default MSN clickbait nonsense that was first the startpage in IE/edge but now also made it into the task bar, groove music, constant pushing of onedrive, the microsoft store and random shortcuts appearing in start for licensed apps you don't even have access to, Zune for the insiders and now even file explorer is getting weird. I still think Azure is cool but it is becoming bloated out of control with dozens of apps doing more or less the same thing.

It was pretty easy Linux is fast, it’s actually PRIVATE, yes that’s right, private. There are no spyware or ads anywhere Barely any viruses, built-in features. Valve is working with linux users For anyone that hates windows 11, I would use windows 10 for about maybe a year. Ads in file browser, ads in boot screen (preloaded ones), 10-second ads before a .exe file executes, ads on all close-buttons (even on the close-buttons of ads, rinse repeat), not having close-buttons on i-frames in html, injected i-frames with ads everywhere, ads on bsods. I thought all the claims from MS about loving/supporting Linux was just typical marketing drivel to push WSL. Knowing the delinquent robot MS is, this could all just be its twisted way of showing that love. While I think LSW (so, the other way around) would've been better than WSL, it's interesting hearing some veteran former employees speculating that Windows will just become a Linux distro eventually. @@themystic5935 Very true, I have no idea why people think so much about distributions, at least for surface-level reasons. There are only a couple of valid reasons to think about distributions, those being ease of installation/sensible defaults, and the init system and package manager. I suppose one might argue that default DEs fall under sensible defaults, but then one should recommend DEs so the user can go on to choose a distribution that has that desktop environment. Ease of installation/sensible defaults is highly subjective, and thus should be left to the user's own opinion. Of course, there are specialty distributions that are designed with specific functionality in mind, e.g. Puppy Linux, but I think that falls under ease of installation or set-up.

With Cloud applications you can run any application on Linux today, even MS Excel and Word. Don't give up, its hard at first, but do a little bit every day, in the morning, or at night before bed or work, an hour of study. In 6 weeks I have learned more than I did in college, just by applying myself every moment I have that is free, I watch coding videos, product seminars, etc., and just getting that habit started, and last, it gets really easy and you start to find it part of your day, like that first cup of coffee :)

If true, that's incredibly sad. I work with a charity that refurbishes old business laptops/desktops for low-income individuals and families. We're still putting Win10 on them because of compatibility issues, but this means we can't start using 11 anytime soon, as we preload the machines with OpenOffice etc and complete Windows setup with a local account (a solid 50% of the people we donate machines to have never used a computer in their lives, and Windows setup can prove to be rather challenging).

I strongly recommend typing in linux system administration and finding a few courses to study at the same time. It may seem like all these new capabilities coming to linux is a good thing but I fear it may be worse for us in the long run. The more proprietary software that reaches linux the closer it will become to being just like Windows and Mac. When and if that happens only the real tech savy people will be able to leave the digital sandbox that we've been put into. We are competing with A.I. at this point.

You'll be able to remove these via registry or local group policy editing - but it will probably not be there at all for Enterprise edition/s of Win11. I mean, to be fair, even if they do not have the ads you still can question whether Microsoft is recording your every move (through app launch logs, for example) and telement it back because, well, WinNT is closed source. Especially since "Recent Opened Files" is a thing in recent Windows 10 builds. And really anything that isn't open source or is written by you cannot be said to be truly secure. What if the company decide to throw tables out of the window? You can't prevent that. That doesn't mean I like the idea of having ads inside file explorer. I understand why it's there, but it's certainly not attractive and, probably won't earn much good for the company Which might be the reason they push to insiders (sort of like open beta), as anyone with windows running (and signs in to their account) can opt to be a insider and receive insider builds/updates
@monad_tcp
@monad_tcp 2 жыл бұрын
That's not exactly true, you can do security analysis on closed source software. And its not the kernel that's the problem. The software that runs the telemetry is a service and its very clean and not hidden at all, just with the SysInternals tools you can find it. They are not even trying to hide it, the rest of the system is probably clean, there are people decompiling code and looking for those things. Big companies can customize Windows and make it as bare minimum as they want, Windows is very modular, you can uninstall the telemetry very easily, I bet they don't give a fuck about consumers and their clients really are big corporations that use other methods of deployment. "whether Microsoft is recording your every move (through app launch logs, for example) " They definitively are recording some telemetry on app launching and even file search, because they say explicitly in the EULA if you agree and don't opt out of it, the question are them still collecting after you disable, I didn't find any evidence of that, nor did I find any analysis suggesting that.
@monad_tcp

I don't buy this idea that open source is magically secure, for a thing to be secure it needs much more than that. Heartbleed is a good example. Also, Having the source code isn't even required to find some bugs or those things like back doors, you can easily find them with a kernel debugger. For ex, the Explorer opening TCP connections would be so obvious. (it does indeed open a TCP connection, but that's for the OneDrive thing, if you uninstall that component, its gone and the only TCP connections are going to be if you open networked computers, I bet they removed that AD bullshit) The thing you guys don't realize is that Big Corporations and the US govt will use things from Microsoft because of being "certified", they care about security, and the software can be made secure if you know how to do it through their consulting channels , its just that they have other means to make Microsoft comply with what they want. In the end of the day, its only another way of making money. Use this Enterprise version without ADs and crappy that is more secure.

" What if the company decide to throw tables out of the window? " That's where the normal contracts and lawyers and laws come into, that would be a law suit. Ironically Cannonical pulled that, of all things, and its fucking open source. Its too say that the politics of those things matter more than just the ideology of open source magically turning things secure, are you even building your own binaries and reading all of the source code ? see how pointless it is from practical perspective.
@monad_tcp
@monad_tcp 2 жыл бұрын
That said, I do like open source, because I can modify it, not because its somehow magically secure if you don't do your proper Infosec job on top of it, I don't think for a moment its secure, it may be more secure if there are lots of people using it, and its patched, and updated, and hardened, and audited (
