This is a hype vs reality review of the Microtech Socom Elite manual with m390 steel. This is a comprehensive review with size specs and comparisons, and footage of me using the knife.

I've bought way too many knives just these past 6 weeks with my wife out of town! This is so hard to resist. I've been researching the 2019 Socom Elite for a couple weeks now. I think your presentation just put me over the edge-- thinking of getting the Tanto stonewashed blade with C204p. Thanks for the presentation. I mainly stick to EDC type folders ranging from Spydercos and Kershaws to Chris Reeves and Reates. I did buy a Microtech Hawk last month-- that is the only Microtech I own-- But I think I will add a Socom Elite tonight!!

12:18 "Just stick it in & go for it, & if it breaks, it breaks." Been my motto since I hit puberty...yesterday. LOL 😆 But serially, this is a great video & it makes me glad that I went out on a limb & just bought a black two-tone manual tanto combo edge. Especially since I generally don't like liner/frame locks, tip-down-only, or heavy knives. But I'd heard so many great things, & they're so hard to find (especially manuals) that I had to go for it. And if I don't like it, I can always give the next person a good deal on it even if it does mean I lose money. But I don't think that will happen. I've owned maybe 15 Microtechs, all OTFs, & I think there will be something special about this knife. I don't do anything particularly rough with my knives but I think it'll be good to know that I can if I need to. Maybe I'm wrong, but I guess I'll find out in a few days. But I think I made a good decision buying one while I had the chance. 😃

Great review - the Elite’s blade is a bit similar to the Chris Reeve Large Inkosi. I do the exact same thing when I sharpen my Inkosi, where the edge broadens towards the tip. This gives me much better slicing performances near that tip than if I were to match the tip bevel to the belly!

@@inthepocket7405 Hey man. I'm 55 years old. I used to live in L.A. back in the old days when there was no limit to open or conceal carry of knives and people weren't going around stabbing everyone. High Schools used to have competition shooting teams and meet at ranges and no one was shooting each other. We used to get teachers permission to have our parents drop our hunting rifles at metal shop class and do work on them and no one was shooting each other. You used to be allowed to have three rifles on your rifle rack on the inside rear shield of your truck and there were NO mass shootings. It's a specific group of people that California has become flooded with that are indoctrination people into thinking knives are for killing. The day I left and moved to South Carolina for 12 years, I never experienced that mentality. Now I moved to socialist Oregon to help take care of my Pops, and all of a sudden, I'm surrounded by the same group of people I left behind in California. Good luck with your socialist state. It used to be great out there, but not anymore.

Yeah, I’m 36, so I didn’t really get to see that California, by the time I was born, it already started to go that direction. I lived in Florida for my twenties, and it was the complete opposite there. I just wish we could all find a middle ground🤷🏽♂️ the mass shootings thing is just absurd, and if you don’t teach the youth how to deal with their issues, and coddle them, it will keep happening.

I've had exactly the same one before and sold it. Everything was great about this knife... except two things: that terrible matt black finish on the scales and tip-up only carry. I'm also agree about steel choice. It should be made out of something tougher than M390 like: Elmax, RWL34, SG2, Vanax, LC200N etc.
@barrybueler33564 жыл бұрын
Personally I like m390 better than elmax I always wanted to try RWL 34 but I don’t think it’s a super tough steel plus I don’t have much info on sg2 or vanax but I’d love to see more blades in LC200n great stain resistance and plenty tough. I have an ultratech OTF in elmax and I love it just a little hard to sharpen.Personally my 2 favorite stainless steels at the moment are cpm154 and and my favorite AEB-L the longest lasting edge that are tough that still can be sharpened easily especially in the field are my favorite that’s why I love carbon steels especially in fixed blades a little dood grade oil is all u need plus a little patina looks great to me especially on a scandi when u end up with a shine grind and a nice patina on the spine are and before the actual scandi grind it just looks great like a man working knife that doesn’t sit in a knife roll in a safe. You make a great point with the M390. It has been overdone without the optimal heat treat. I wouldn’t mind cru-wear neither. Just a steel that can be taken up to decently high hardness and still retain toughness. AEBL, BD1N, or 52100 at 63 HRC, wouldn’t been sexy choices, but are definitely tough.

I like this knife. The deal breaker for me, is the soft M390. I'm not sure why Microtech gets a pass on it, but every other maker does not. I know, it's softer for "hard use". If that's the case, use a steel that is better suited for the task. If they used Cruwear, I would probably buy one. Hinderer and CRK usually test decent for the steels they use. Microtech and Strider run those steels soft, but they always get a pass. I don't like that. 😉
@inthepocket74054 жыл бұрын
Of coarse you know I agree with you Kurt, and that why I talk about that at the end. Why don’t they use something else if that’s the thought behind it? I don't know why I am one of the only ones pointing things like this out and noticing things that nobody is mentioning? Everyone raves about this knife. I just got one. I cannot stand the deployment. It literally sucks and you have to practice. The handle has so little real estate, especially at the bottom where it needs more width, that you have to get used to really keeping your fingers away from the blade so you are not accidentally holding back deployment with an edge of your finger. I find the knife way too 'petite' for a 4" blade. This never happens on the Spyderco Para 2 or Military models, where opening is as smooth as butter and there is more real estate on the handles so you don't even think about where your fingers are. I find the handle on this knife to be way too small, too petite, and not beefy or wide enough, especially at the bottom. Sure it is well made. Once you get used to opening the knife the flipping action is great. All I know is after owning and handling Medfords, Hobacks, Microtech and other classics, I just keep going back to my Spyderco Military and Paramilitary 2 for EDC!

Thanks for the video I am trying to decide between the socom and the LUWDT. After the anti 2nd amendment moments from benchmade I will not be purchasing from them.
@inthepocket74054 жыл бұрын
Of course man. Awe, that’s a tough one, but I do think you could decide from your general use. The LUDT is a better slicer, just from the set up, and the Socom will be a better all around, and hard use.

Kenny, I enjoy youe videos but the run time is too long for my preferences, 20 minutes is preferable.
@inthepocket74054 жыл бұрын
Barry, I appreciate your input, but I have tried many times to try truncate my videos, but it seemed to be a frivolous endeavor. I shot this review twice trying to get the time down, and it came out nearly identical. It’s just the way I am... I am just thorough. Some of the knives are a 25 min video, but it just depends on the knife, and I never try to force it into a certain time limit, I just let the knife do the talking, so to speak. If you are looking for shorter reviews there are tons of reviewers(most of them actually) that do 20 min and under reviews, but the depth and thoroughness of my reviews is what makes them unique. I have thought of doing truncated reviews of the knives as well, but my time is short as it is, and I can’t see adding a whole new thing. I might try doing first impressions of each knife as well, and that would be in line with a lot of the other reviews. Then you can watch my hype vs reality if you’re looking for that.

I have 100 great blades so if u don’t like the socom I’m up for a trade can send pics maybe the ALmar sere 2000 camo g10 vg10 blade thick liner lock flicks open very smooth one handed operation literally mint condition sits in a pelican box specifically made for blades always wanted a socom but money has gotten tighter over the yrs I have fixed blades hatchets folders brass knuckles an antique iron claw works like new no rust a little wear because it was used by police in the 1950’s to control perps arms but it kept breaking wrists a 120 pound man can control someone 3 times his size with it and they haven’t been made for at least 60 yrs and will probably never be produced again so it can only go up in price I also have a brand new police issue baton I got from my brother who is a cop it’s not a $20 version u find on the Internet but a top of the line one in the $100 plus price range and is also in mint condition and I’ll throw in some knife stickers a mint condition ZT knife pouch that holds around 20 blades and at least 2 surprise blades nothing over $100 but some civivi’s kizers kershaws wtc or one knife of my choice worth over $100 either way the knives will be in great condition if not mint. I can also send my trade to u 1st so u don’t have to worry about the quality of what I’m trading if u have anything else in mind I have so many knives from spyderco ZT Benchmade and more and for fixed blades I have a BHK woodsman cold steel recon tops brothers of bushcraft knife some moras a few HK blades by Benchmade mint condition Vietnam edition kabar with a kydex sheath or a beat up leather sheath from my old kabar that spent 4 yrs in Iraq eastern cutlery and case slipjoint knives the RD Hawk 2 hatchet full tang good sheath 1095 steel a beast that can’t be broken without heavy equipment the Ontario sk-5 blackbird kephart style 154cm steel micarta handles Molle sheath sharp spine or the $200 plus hogue ex-05 flipper in mint condition flips great one hand operation and probably my favorite stainless steel cpm154 and more . PA I’d like that Hinderer also always wanted one but they’ve always been a little pricey for me I try not to spend over $300 on a blade but I can admit I have gone over a little a few times .

Man I'm Soooo pissed r.n.! Made a deal with a guy from a convo in a comment section of one of OCD4EDC's vids I believe... so We had a deal in place where I was getting from this guy an orange *MANUAL SOCOM ELITE* & he was getting 2 knives from me in mint condition which were a Para3 & BladeHQ exclusive Blackout Bugout, so basically a straight up even trade as far as price goes... so we made the deal & was discussed/put in place yesterdy for us to ship out to each other tomorrow morning! So I was literally just about to msg the guy to make sure everything was good to go for the a.m. went to grab my phone & saw he had msg'd me saying "Oh man I'm sorry, I feel like a dick & all but I have to pass on our deal. someone made me an offer I cant refuse" so I had explained to him that we had a deal man! & I too have been in that same position before where I had made a deal with someone & before shipping, was offered a way better deal but what I did on more than 1 occasion said "I'm sorry but I already made a deal with someone! But if for some reason that deal falls thru, you'll have 1st chance! But as MEN, our WORD is all we have! & I'm a man of my word so I have to honor the deal I already made!" Well apparently this guy doesn't feel the same way & isnt a man of his word, because I did NOT get all bitchy with him or anything... I just said what I just stated above, explaining to him that that's NOT cool we had made a DEAL/Had a DEAL in place already & I said "I cant lie to you, I'm a little pissed man" but he has yet to respond and that was over an hour ago so yeah.... SMFH! I know i can NOT be the only MAN who actually KEEPS HIS WORD if & when I make a DEAL with someone for whatever it may be right?!?!? So I'm still in search of a NEW or MINT *Manual SOCOM ELITE* preferably in O.D. green & Tanto blade but will settle for a different one as I was going to with this guy! I have them 2 knives I was going to trade him, but I also have other's and what I'm REALLY trying to sell or trade for the SOCOM I WANT is a MINT *L.E. Law Enforcement/Military Elite Edition O.D. Bll blade* Benchmade INFIDEL! I paid over $500 for it! Never carried outside my home! & Never made any cuts with it! Anyone interested or can help me out plz lmk! Can provide pics & contact info upon request! Sorry for the little rant but this just happened & I'm pissed man, ya know?!? Thanks Fella's!!!🤘

I agree a man should stick to his word but I don't trust people these days if I can't hold the product in hand I can't make a trade unless we go through a verified middle man . I've heard way to many horror stories of people being shipped a box of rocks or counterfeit goods . It's a shame but , it's the state of affairs these days 😥

@@OsamaBinDarrel yeah I've heard many stories like that as well my friend! And it's a SAD, SAD, FCKN' thing! What we did in the "Vape Community" was if someone did that or sent a clone/counterfeit etc, or any type of scumbag move, it really sucks for the person who got burned, but at least we'd spread the word far & wide across the world & "BlackList" that person! Is it REAL JUSTICE... Eh, maybe not! But @least wed do what we could ya know?!? And I e yet to meet someone like that in this community..... but what just happened to me with that... some would say it's not as bad or on the same level... but it kind of may as well be ya know what I mean?

@@larrymarsico4059 definitely but unfortunately people don't stand behind their word anymore . @@OsamaBinDarrel that's what I'm saying my dude! It's a Shame! And he contacted me and asked what I had, so I sent him some pic's & what not, he said he liked this & that, I said ok we can do that... we exchanged address' & set it up for us to ship out to each other Saturday *tomorrow* morning, then I get that msg of him breaking our deal tonight, smdh. Still have yet to hear anything back from him after I said I didnt think that was cool, that we had a deal & a MAN should stick by his word etc & that I've been in that position on a few occasions but had to stick to my word etc & just said "I cant lie man, I'm a little pissed" but no response at all since that! $300 for a knife with an aluminum handle and a liner lock. How do you think that is a good price? Bro you can get a cold steel sr1 for less then half that that will outperform that. I can't believe I watched 5 minutes of that. Shoot a benchmade adamas or contego are alot less $ then that and way better and you get the butterfly.
