Changing a blown light bulb in a microwave. This microwave was fitted with a 20W SES Pygmy bulb. Microwave ovens have lethal voltages (even when unplugged). Observe all safety notices on your microwave oven before doing any work, and only carry out the work if you are qualified to do so. The microwave shown here was an Onn branded model.

Great stuff, that's good to hear. The workings of microwaves are quie generic. It's only the timer controls that vary significantly.

To those who aren't well-versed in electrical work: You shouldn't attempt to do this yourself if you do not know anything about electricity. As stated, capacitors in microwaves can hold very high-voltage when fully-charged. Unless you isolate yourself from ground and are careful not to touch both the + and - ends of a capacitor, you should probably leave the microwave unplugged for about 24 hours just to give those caps time to discharge. You could also bleed the caps safely by bridging the + and - terminals together (shorting them) with an item that introduces a certain amount of resistance (but not so much that electricity cannot travel between the terminals) while also isolating yourself from that item. In short: You shouldn't mess with high-voltage systems unless you have, at minimum, a basic understanding of electricity and can perform the repair safely. That said, we can all make our own choices :P

I'd estimate that most people, even those not well versed in electronics, can understand to unplug the unit first and avoid touching any electrical connections while working, wearing gloves if necessary. I'm hoping we haven't devolved so far as a species that that would be beyond most people's capabilities.

Well after watching your video, I think that I'll use the microwave with no bulb working as I don't feel like getting nuked. Plus I'm disabled, so removing the microwave cover is not an easy task for me. Would be so simple if the bulb was in it's own compartment at the side of the microwave......wonder why manufacturers don't do that.

Exactly.! I wonder why manufacturers always put stuff around important pieces you might have to work on, sometimes the actual items end up being more fucked up than when I touched them in the first place, that's why I don't Fuck with them either 🫤

Make sure that you don't handle the new bulb with bare hands, which will leave oil on the surface and may shorten the life of the bulb. If you DO handle the bulb with bare hands, make sure you use glass cleaner to carefully clean the bulb, prior to reassembly.

That is indeed a good thing to do with halogen bulbs, but it's unnecessary on these incandescent bulbs.

Ok, so ….. I had no idea that nukers can actually HOLD a charge in its capacitors. Had no idea that capacitors actually existed beyond Doc and Marty’s world. Bahahahahahaha. Thank you so much for that little nugget of info in your vid description or I may have bit the big one trying to replace the bulb in Mom’s nuker. Grandpa said electricity won’t leave home unless it knows it can come back, is the only thing I know about it. Argh!

The filter capacitor "ought" to be discharged by the magnetron itself if the appliance has been shut off while normally cooking (lamp or no lamp). This happens during a brief moment before the magnetron's cathode becomes too cool to emit electrons. But if you do not know if it really has been discharged, take no chances. And never plug in, let alone power on the appliance with the cover removed.

The "gummed in place" light fixture was probably done by food cooked in the microwave, my model had a film of sticky stuff all over inside the area of the light fixture. My guess is that vapors from cooking food pass through the perforations and gum up that area.

Melissa, so I take it that you have unscrewed the holder that the bulb is in and you can't get the bulb out of that? It may be a push-fit type of bulb in your microwave that pulls out. Wear gloves if you feel that you might break the glass.
@unlimitedcowboy
@unlimitedcowboy 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, in some microwaves the bulb is built or soldered into a plastic mold, so you can't unscrew. I called SunBeam Microwave to ask to buy the correct bulb and they said that they don't sell it because it is too dangerous to open the microwave, I told them that I had already opened it, but they told me to take it to an authorized dealer. I found the bulb in Amazon and changed it. Fortunately, I already had the correct screwdriver to unscrew the funky screws the company used. They used a screw called security hex or security hexlobe (Torx). The original bulb said that it was 250 volts, but there is a label on the microwave that says to use a bulb that is 125 volts. Well, the company didn't want to clarify my question about the difference in voltage, so I decided to buy the LED bulb in amazon and hope for the best, anyways, it wasn't expensive. Just like the original, the bulb I got says 250 volts, it is LED and is brighter. Now let's see how long it lasts. Here is an image of the kind of screw head used on my microwave : photo-suit.com/editor/? And here is the bulb I bought in Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F8TS3FK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

is this pretty standard on how to change the light bulb with any or most microwaves? I don't have this make/Brand in this video here but I have a Cookworks and ridiculously I've only had it for a few short months and the bulb has stopped working already but I don't like your comment "Microwave ovens have lethal voltages (even when unplugged)." that worries me but also doesn't make sense to me if it's switched off, how can it be lethal if it's not getting any power???
@TrystansWorkbench
@TrystansWorkbench 3 жыл бұрын
David, A microwave has a capacitor in it that builds up a charge at a lethal voltage. This charge is retained even when the microwave is turned off and unplugged. The charge dissipates though over many hours. Typically, yes, the bulb change is typical on most microwaves as the designs have not really changed in some forty years apart from the user controls (buttons, displays).
