Microwave Poached Eggs in 2 Minutes Flat

Allow us to introduce you to your new favourite food hack - microwave poached eggs in two minutes. For quick weekday breakfasts or easy weekend brunches, microwave eggs couldn't be easier. And the best bit is, all you need is an egg in a cup, a bit of water and you're well on your way to perfect poached eggs.
The only question is, what will you have with them?

How to poach an egg in the microwave:
1. Break an egg into a microwavable mug or cup
2. Add 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of water (if in doubt, add less and top up later)
3. Add a tiny splash of white wine vinegar (helps bind the egg together)
4. Put in microwave and cover with a microwave safe plate
5. Cook on half power for 45 seconds
6. Remove from mug with a slotted spoon (or a table spoon)

The reason people love Delia, Nigella, Jamie, Mary B etc. is they give indisputably clear and tested instructions. This one seems simple enough but for many people this will go wrong. My constructive criticism - meant positively. The presenter says 'cup' but uses a mug. So when she says 'a third of a cup' does she mean the official UK measure or fill the mug a third full? What temperature is the water? What size is the egg? What sort of vinegar? What wattage is the microwave - I can't believe half power would cook an egg in a thick mug with a heavy plate on top. And she got the egg out with no water, most beginners would find that nigh on impossible and put a soaking wet egg straight onto toast instead of blotting it first. And my last comment: many people will not be breakfasting alone or may want two eggs, so what are the timing rules for multiple eggs?

Never attempt to poach an egg in a Microwave unless you want to spend the rest of your day in agony in A&E and then come home to clean your microwave. The egg will explode like a hand grenade I kid you not

No need to add vinegar,unless you like the taste. I can’t believe she overlooked it with 50% power. My machine at 100% and 60 sec. does it about right. 2 eggs takes 90 sec.

CAUTION eggs done in the microwave can explode. I burnt my lip really badly on one.I've seen some hacks to use boiling water not cold but I wouldn't try to eat it until it has cooled down!

Yeah, had a friend who was sent to the hospital after using this same method (egg exploded when removing the plate from on top of the mug) Severe burns and lasting scars. Extremely irresponsible and dangerous to suggest this method of cooking - especially without any meaningful safety warnings. Shameful.

Sorry to hear... Different power microwaves produce different results. Try zapping it for 15 seconds at a time?

@@kristicallnc Pierce the yolk with a sharp knife before cooking..that will stop the 'explosion'. Don't worry, the yolk will stay in tact.

You don't have the yolk just right, that is the UGLIEST poached egg I have ever seen. Not to mention, you add the water, salt and vinegar first. Sorry, out of all the microwave poached egg videos on YT this one rated on technique, and end dish is basically a 5/10.

What the heck is half power? There is no worldwide standard. It's a good video otherwise. You are one of many who don't give power in terms of watts. These KZfaqrs may as well saysomething equally useless like "set the power to what my mother does".

It's true... We did debate discussing power settings in depth but we thought we'd bore people to death! For most microwaves, it's 50-80% of full power. The key thing is not doing at full or you nuke the egg! If you have any power suggestions for this recipe let us know

@@MumsnetI tried 800w for 50 seconds (as I'd seen another video that used 1250w) but my egg exploded :) Dropped it to 600w. It was better (nothing exploded) but still needed a few extra seconds. Thank goodness eggs are cheap and taste good even when they don't come out as expected. In the end I just mashed them up and spread them on toast :) I WILL get it right soon.

How can she say absolutely spot on when the poached egg was overcooked? She doesn't know how to cook it and the person who did the video obviously hid the overcooked egg and put in a different angle. Duh!

Sorry...but the yolk should run. 45 seconds should do the trick. You can pre-boil the water too and add more vinegar. And salt.

Did not show end result of the yoke. But from what little I could see. The yoked looked too solid and the egg white was rubbery. Why not do the vid until you get it right. Why post this? Other wise, there are other good qualities of your vid production. Good luck.
