This worked fine for me but I suggest getting a kit from the Auto parts store for doing door trim etc. They are plastic levers and pry bars usually in a kit of 4-6 different sizes. Plastic means you won't be as likely to puncture a battery and they are prybar shaped so you don't need the eraser for a fulcrum.

This works!! You don’t need to disassemble the entire MBP to get the battery out. It took me about 15 minutes to remove the battery and then about 5 minutes to clean up the existing sticky sections using a tweezer to peel it off. Remember to drain the battery until the computer shuts off abs DO NOT use metal tools around the battery. I recommend using a small amount of nail polish remover on the edge of a card to help soften the glue as you pry the battery out.

Thanks, this helped me a lot and saved a ton of time! I did what you suggested, stated with the battery right away and removed the 2nd piece first and then the rest. It worked out great and the the battery removal process (after I removed all the screws and the touchpad ribbon) took literally 10 minutes! Though I did use adhesive removal that came with the iFixit kit and some pretty wide (much wider than screwdriver) pryer. Also the fact that my battery was very swollen, strangely, helped because due to that swelling some of the adhesive, I guess, unstuck naturally over time. Thanks, Cheers!

Yes metal may not be ideal, just don't use anything small and sharp. I used a 2" flexible putty knife because it was thin and wide. It was super easy to get under the edge and pry the batteries out easily. My batteries were leaking one of the chemicals already. I could small it when I opened the case. Battery installed with no issues. Did remove trackpad cable from motherboard and trackpad to protect it. Easily removed and replaced. Thin and wide, regardless of what you use, works quick and fairly safely. My plastic tools were too thick especially for the batteries over the trackpad.

Thank you so much man, I watched your videos and went for it. If anyone has trackpad issues after just make sure that tape on top of the battery is fastened and plugged in correctly. I had to redo that step after turning the computer on to no avail.

What's wrong with that? You can frame it that way and it sounds pretty bad but I can only imagine that people who see things this way are viewing the world through a negative lens and/or get a kick out of slagging someone off. I see it like this. Someone tried to do something in a different way to save time and succeeded at his goal. There were some decisions made in the learning process that were wrong and the process could be improved further. He shared all the procedures including the procedures that turned out to be a mistake and openly admitted that warning not to repeat those. Now thousands of people have knowledge about exactly what he did, what worked and what didn't work so well. I think that's a net positive contribution to the world and thank him for expressing his experiences in the way that he did. I hope The Curiosity Collective will continue to do what he does the way he does it and share with us all the successes and failures without discouragement from people who just want to tell someone they are wrong.

I just replace my battery without removing every component. I made sure the battery is dead so it will have less energy if I punctured it. Also I used acetone to weaken the glue and then floss, and copper wire to get under the battery and cut through the glue with the wire until the glue was weak enough for the whole battery. Once the first battery to the right was up it was easy to just use a plastic card for the rest of the batteries by using the extra space. Don't use a screwdriver. If you use a screwdriver and the battery bends, or dents it will start to spark.

Great to know! I just bought a used 2015 retina with a good stock battery so I wouldnt have to do the tear apart task to replace a battery. I wondered if it could be done without tearing the machine apart. I see the nuances and cautions that need to be taken. I've read suggestions of using a putty knife - I have a set of plastic putty knives/spreaders - look for plastic ones they will be a safer tool to use.

You shouldnt use any metal tools near LiPo batteries unless youre sure what you are doing but i still wouldnt recommend it because if you want to remove the batterie its likely already broken so its even more unstable. Damaging the battery can cause fire and or explosion and is prevented by using plastic tools without sharp edges.

I'm going to do mine this way as well. I may go so far as to get pieces pried up just enough to get some acetone in there to weaken the bond, especially on the middle cells. I will also probably try and use a putty knife instead of a screwdriver to get things started because it will spread out the force on the cells.

I did use this technique. However, it is very risky. One time I moved my knife (I did it with a large knife, its top was broken so it was flat) and then it shot through my motherboard. Luckily nothing damaged, but be careful guys! Ah also, if you use a plastic small bag, or 2 to be sure, you can put some hot water in it and leave it on top of the battery part you want to remove. Then it is way easier to remove the battery. Good luck!

I would not have gotten through the process successfully just watching THIS vid, as there are important steps omitted (removing screws, tape, connectors and adhesives). On the other hand, I would not have gotten thru the process as quickly without THIS vid. Thanks again! Dude you honestly should delete this. You could probably be held liable for reccommending people use a sharp screwdriver for this, which is just absolutely moronic. This has 37k+ views at the moment and I can absolutely guarantee someone has started a fire as a result of your terrible advice. I recommend people watch Hamad Benaicha's method. He uses a metal spatula, which is still dangerous, but at least he's not applying pressure directly to the battery walls like in this video so much as into the seam between the laptop and the battery. I personally recommend you sub in blunt plastic spudgers for added gentleness. You can easily apply the necessary force without worrying about messing with the battery. I had a bit of turpentine and alcohol on hand to remove adhesive if necessary, but I wound up not feeling like I needed it. Apple Pie Tech's fishing line method was also helpful for getting started on each cell of the battery. But the spudgers were far more effective once you have a bit of lift on each cell and you're able to get them in there cleanly.

Do not reference the majority of this video. Take your laptop to a professional or purchase a kit that includes proper tools. Take precautions: Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Wear protective eye-wear, gloves and a heavy shirt. Keep a bottle of white vinegar nearby in case the battery leaks and a tin canister to dispose of the battery once removed. 1. Drain the battery to 0%. 2. Make sure all peripherals are unplugged. 3. Cover your retina display screen with aluminum foil. 4. Using a syringe, squeeze a couple drops or acetone below each cell, then use a plastic tool or dental floss to gently lift the battery. 5. Make sure to clean the surface and remove all adhesives from the laptop base before installing the new battery. One useful advice from this author, you can skip about 70 steps of the battery removal process by carefully removing the cells in the order mentioned.
