In this tutorial we will learn about Mid Side processing with Ableton's EQ Eight. Clean up your mixes especially in the low end. Use headphones or full range speakers to really hear the details in this video. While there are many EQ plugins with more functionality, EQ Eight does offer Mid Side processing and we go over it in depth here.

Brilliant tutorial, thank you!! A quick question, say if you have 3 synth tracks, 1 bass & 2 leads, would you mid/side process them individually or best to keep it simple and just keep on the master only? I guess I got slightly confused as you dropped it into the master..

Awesome tutorial! I am trying to work on my mastering chain at the moment so this is super helpful. Would it be common practice to add quite a few EQ Eights on the master chain, with more surgical mid side processing? What other simple stock effects would you recommend for mastering? Thanks!

As a mastering engineer myself, I kind of cringe at the notion of a "one size fits all" effect chain for mastering. In some circumstances, I only use one EQ and a limiter. Other times, I use a chain of over 5 or 6 effects with parallel processing and multiple limiters in a series. Mastering should be more about fixing problems with the right tools. Essentially a well mixed/produced track shouldn't need multiband compression or saturation processing to achieve the right sound. That said, I do find that at least one EQ and a limiter at the end is pretty essential. I personally use mid/side processing all the time. Its REALLY important to listen closely to what the side channel is doing as removing too much low end can remove a lot of width from the track if youre not careful.

Great Tutorial! But i got a huge problem since a few months which i was not able to fix yet. when i go to m/s in eq, the mids are activated but the sides are not and i dont know how to activate them. would be really cool if someone could tell me how to fix it.

What about the bass? Like I thought it was to ser the bass (low) part to mono? I dont get it.. I only understood u cleaned it up but I csnt understand how you made the low go to mono?

hi! do you suggest also doing this with individual tracks before it goes to master or only during master processing? i have a pad/synth that has mud on its track and i don't like it. don't want to wait until mastering tho to eq it out, but i also think i am compromising sound of the pad/synth before it goes to master. hope that makes sense. thanks in advance seeds to stage. truly appreciate your videos =)

Thanks for this great tutorial. Just wondering why you put the M/S eq on the master channel, rather than say on the choir pad channel to remove the low end stereo information and boost the high end stereo information on that? Was this just to demonstrate it easily over the whole mix or would you actually tend to use this on the master rather than individual tracks? Or is it because were you trying to remove all the low end stereo information in general because that stuff usually works better in mono, and vice versa for high end?

I had the same question. also was wondering how that drastic low cut would affect the overall song, especially for the subs, kick and bass. seems like a weird thing to cut out that much low end information on the master. hope someone can clear this up

@@DaveyReynolds You don't need sub in sides, in fact you should remove them all the time, making your kick drums and basses mono under 50-200hz (your ears will tell you)

when cutting out the low end from of the sides, why didn't you just high pass it instead of low shelf to guarantee the low end has gone

Its a concept that you can apply on anything from solo instruments , group busses or even at mastering stage... So in other words in any of these processes: sound design, mixing and mastering...

at 6:00 u reduce the lower frequencies of the sound with a low shelf, why didn't u take them out completely with a cut? is this just because that sound has relevant information on those frequencies of because its better to reduce instead of cutting like this?

music production might not be for you then, or you aren't using monitors. If you're on headphones then how would you hear a difference xD

Jayo Caine could also be an experience thing. It’s not very just to immediately say this isn’t right for someone. These sound changes aren’t recognizable to the majority of people unless your ears are trained and fine tuned to “slight” frequency changes. About a month ago when i first listened to this i was really just getting into these finer details of production. I didn’t really hear anything either. But now after rewatching i can definitely hear it. Just takes some training, it’s rare for anybody to be naturally gifted with frequency analyzing skills
