In this rather subjective video, I show how removing distracting frequency ranges (low bass and high treble or brillance) can help you focus on the most vital part of the mix: the midrange. Which frequencies comprise of the midrange of the music is a matter of opinion, and in my opinion, it depends on the content of the music you are mixing when it comes to choosing the "midrange". Regardless of which exact frequencies you choose to listen to, if you can get the midrange of your music to sound good, then the rest is very easy to dial in.
00:00 - Intro
0:45 - Critical Listening
1:24 - Why Midrange is Vital
4:20 - EQ just the Midrange
10:30 - EQ the Full Range

I cannot recommend his mixing and mastering course enough. I've finally got my first freelance job for creating a radio advert and my knowledge of mixing helped tremendously. The discord community was super helpful as well. I've also managed to buy ableton live with the educational discount and basically got a course and ableton for just the price of ableton. Thanks Anthony ❤

Nice work antony. A good thing to note that helps your case is the effect of masking, not just masking of sounds at the same time and in the same range, but spectral masking which happens over a longer period of time and masks from the bottom up… so if your low end is too loud, its masks the low mid range, if the low mid range is too loud it masks the top mids, if the top mids are too loud it masks the highs. So by focusing on the mids, then balancing your lows against that perhaps can help people with lesser listening environments as they focus on what they can hear reliably first. The issues I hear more than anything with beginner/intermediate mixes is too much bass, so the mids are not mixed well, or too much mids, so the highs are not detailed enough. My 2c 🤘🏼

LOL. Best way to focus on the mids is to get old and loose all the high frequency in your hearing. At 2.45 I hear no highs. Just the Bass. @ 71 I still like messing with music though.

Interested in your view on "mix cubes". One question re mixing in general. Seems to me that the sounds you are removing in low mids would be coming from Kick or sub bass instruments. Wouldn't it be better to EQ at instrument rather than mix? Reason being to avoid removing lows from other instruments. Also as to high frequency hearing loss, mine starts to reduce at about 1.5k and is gone totally above about 3-4k.

I think this could be a useful tip for identifying potential problems you might not be hearing as is. But I also think it's worth pointing out that this technique feels like it's coming more from a mastering perspective. It's good for finding a little more balance, but overall I think the issues could have been addressed more in the/ a mixing phase, and leaving a little less work for the/ a mastering phase. It's still a good point to make though; focusing more on the midrange than the low bass or upper highs. That said, I think the specific examples you gave in adjusting the EQ were all things that could have been solved ahead of time, potentially. With the exception of adjusting the highs at the very end.

Hello! Is this EQ Midrange approach useful for mixing of each separate track (stem) or better only for mastering of whole track (on Main)?
@SeedtoStage
@SeedtoStage 2 ай бұрын
It could be used whenever but I’d say it’s better for when your tracks are all separated because when you’re mastering youre listening for the cohesiveness of the entire track in full range. I just used a single track for simplicities sake.

This sentiment is why Mahogany is usually my go to tonewood - it acts as a natural EQ to round off highs and lows. You can really dig in and play loud without distorted overtones of highs/lows that diminish Polyphony, as well as also play delicately and still have full definition.
