2021 Follow Up of a Middle Age Skate Dad's Skateboard set up and review of my two Anti-Hero 9.0" Orange Set Ups.
I preface this description and video by stating that the views expressed in this video are of my own, and from the perspective of a middle aged parent who started skateboarding at the age of 42 so he could teach skateboarding to his then 5 year old how to skate.
These set ups are in my opinion, perfect for the 40+ parent that wants to ride with their child at the skatepark while having the right set up to ride everything from the smallest mini-bowl to some of the biggest and deepest bowls up to 12-13 ft. at the skateparks.
I know that it might be tempting to set up the same board you rode as a teenager, such as a Caballero Dragon with old school Rat Bones or Cubics out of nostalgia. However, most dads that show up with that set up end up struggling to ride the skatepark and some even eat it pretty bad because they're trying to ride a modern skatepark on technology that's 40 years old.
Over the last 8 years, I first relearned how to skateboard on flatground and began skatepark riding at the age of 42 so that I could figure out how to teach my son how to ride the skatepark as part of his alternative occupational therapy.
These two Anti Hero boards have allowed me to progress a little at a time in skateboarding while providing a safe and stable riding experience. These set ups allow me to do basic skatepark and bowl tricks on a solid, stable and fast skateboard. These board set ups have allowed me to cruise fast to film my son or catch up to him quickly if he is getting into mischief, and do simple tricks like front and backside grinds, and board slides at the skatepark.

One recommendation I have for older skaters or Dads riding the skatepark. If you wish to ride bigger bowls, I would recommend a board with a wheelbase larger than 14.5" or longer. It will give you the stability and speed in the bigger bowls and the board will not feel as twitchy as a board that is sized 8X32" w/ a 14" wheelbase.
One last word of advice to parents, especially if you are in your late 30s, 40s and 50s...If you are just starting out or coming back after a hiatus of XX years and that you were a talented skater in your teens...keep in mind your age and physical conditioning. The goal is not necessarily reaching a high level or reach the same level you were at before...The goal is to be able to keep doing this with your child(ren) as a family. I've seen Dads who you can tell used to be good but don't realize that it it's been 15-20 years since they last rode, but they are now 20-50 lbs. heavier, their muscles are not as elastic anymore and a slam takes a long time to recover...
I've seen so many try tricks they did when they were teens, only to slam really bad, tear a muscle or ligament, or snap their achilles. I've never seen any of them come back. It sucks for the kids because they were starting to love skateboarding and coming to the skatepark with a parent

You know really bugs me is the fact people had to try talk down on someone else for the skill/choice of tricks....does it really matter if people are or aren't throwing themselves down stair sets? All that should matter to people is that fact we all skate and we do it for the fun of it. Weather your doing hand rails or curbs all that matters in my eye is the fun your having. Great video mate very informative! Really enjoyed the watch mate!

Thanks for checking the video out. Glad you enjoyed it as I wasn't sure if anyone would even watch. Unfortunately, comments like that are the nature of the internet. Some people have even commented about the color markings on our son's board that allow us to communicate to him. They don't realize that it's akin to making fun of someone who has modified and implemented improvements to their child's wheelchair.

Thanks for checking out the vid! I tried creating something different and provide a real-world review after riding them at the skatepark. There's so many people posting board reviews that are unboxing videos and they're sharing the specs and a review for a board they haven't ridden yet.

@@skating4satori672 I am skating the Anti Hero 8.62 with 14.75 wheelbase.. what difference do you think I would notice skating the 9.0 Anti Hero. I am 5'8 160 30inch inseam,, I was not sure if the length of this board would be too much different??? I cruise fast through the parks.. no tricks,,

My Son rides the 8.38 which is similar in size to the 8.62 and when I ride his, it feels small and twitchy because of the length and wheelbase. The 8.75 w/ 14.75 wb now feels short and twitchy too. Once you start riding the bigger board, it should be alright.We were talking yesterday during a bowl session that you can always adjust up, but it's hard to adjust down.

Thanks for this! As a 46 year old skater I'm on the lookout for a board with a wider wheelbase. I went from a Tired 9.25 with a 14.5" base to a Polar Dane Brady shape 9.75" that has a 14.125" wheelbase and I keep having difficulties with that shorter base. This Anti-Hero may be just what I've been looking for. Time to get one and transfer those Indy 169's.

I’m 6,3 size 13 shoe this board is built for me. Mellow concave I have like 4 of them. I ride 58,$ on them and sometimes 56. I have 2 set up with wheels wells. I like dragons because ,y knees are old. Love the 15 in wheel base ! I get wheels that I can rotate and I never get problems with them going uneven. I love this board. I have ace trucks on them but I had to put small risers on them. I didn’t need the big ones with my Indy’s. Love the North Shore reference ! 😂😂😂😂. This board is built for speed ! Love it in bowls. I ride 166 trucks ace and it fits perfect. I can do a lot on this board. 56 was good but 58 is better. I ride loose trucks a had to change out the bushings but that’s just me. I love this board so much. I’m not changing for anything. Fits me perfect. John Cardiel is one of the first ATV skaters before the likes of Grant Taylor and Tom Schaars. Thanks for sharing this review.

Nice man I want to build an antihero like this but maybe the 8.06 or 8.25 with semi soft wheels. Just got back into skating after almost a decade and just built a zigzagger on 56mm oj 87a’s. Feels great to be back on a board

Great setups! I ride an almost identical setup except I downsized a bit to 56mm wheels so I wouldn't wheel bite so much. I've never heard much about the clear spf formula. Interesting to hear it has a slightly softer feel than the regular spf formula. I like spfs on smooth concrete and they last forever but on street asphalt they feel so harsh and chattery. I might try the spf clear formula as something between the formula 4s and regular spfs. Thanks for sharing!

I love this board! I've told our crew that we ride with that this is probably the board I'll ride into the sunset...Lately, I've been riding the older one and it's getting to the end as the board is getting chipped up, the Hosoi wheels were 60mm new & now down to 54mm, and the grind groove is literally a few 50-50s to hit the axle...

Enjoyable and honest review. Forgot to ask. Do you think your lifetime of martial arts and physical fitness helped you with picking up skateboarding later in life? Did the balance from martial arts translate to skateboarding?
@skating4satori672
@skating4satori672 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video! I would say my advantage over other parents was being active in fitness and martial arts into my 40s and also that I was able to already ride a skateboard. The struggle really resided in the steep learning curve of how to figure out how to ride the skatepark. That was from ground zero.

As someone who has been through multiple surgeries from skating, I’ve stopped trying to “push” myself (no pun intended). Instead, when I DO skate, I’m focusing on carving and having fun. If I can pull off a few slash grinds I’m fine with that.

Ty for this. Seems to me the Ace 55’s are almost equivalent to the Indy 159’s? If so, that means my 159s would work on a 9”?
@skating4satori672
@skating4satori672 Жыл бұрын
The Ace 55 Classics are 9" axle to axle. The sizing is in between the 159 (8.75") and 169 (9.2"). The pro that I mentioned in the video rides this with 159s and 56mm SF-F4s.

I like 15" bolts because of my stance although I don't really need that wide of a wheelbase. I use Independent trucks because I can knock the kingpins out to put longer ones in for better bushings but wouldn't mind a shorter wheelbase truck if I could set the trucks up the same way. It does push the nut too high though, so no grinds. I'm getting the same orange eagle deck and was wondering where I could get skid plates that I wouldn't have to modify to fit. I've checked all the sites like Mode and Decomposed etc. But not sure which ones to get for the nose and tail.
@skating4satori672
@skating4satori672 Жыл бұрын
Try the Antihero Orange with the Ace Trucks. They have a tendency to shorten the wheelbase and make the board more responsive. Not sure where to buy the skid plates. Don't use them so wouldn't know what brand would be a good fit.
