How does fluid get into the middle ear? Why can't middle ear fluid be left alone? This is a video explanation of the causes of middle ear fluid, what happens to that fluid over time, and the damage it can cause to the ear and the health of the patient. This video is for educational purposes only. If you are experiencing health problems, see your local ENT specialist. More videos and information available on my channel or at drkeith.net

heydude76 You hit it right on the head. Doctors do not get into the medical business to help people--they like big money. And the only money bigger than meds is surgery. ENT doctors will bend over backwards to convince you to have surgery. There was a time when people had so much respect and admiration for doctors. Now, people like you just see them for what they really are.

Dr. Forwith, I absolutely love the way you teach! I have been a critical care NICU nurse for 30 yrs. I got pretty good at looking in ears as my son had ear infections ( and he is now 40 yrs old and still gets them) so I learned how to see infections early and he was put on antibiotics. Now: I have a ton of fluid rolling around in my head and have hearing loss. It sounds like the ocean waves inside my ear with any movement. I cannot look inside my own ear, so I looked on youtube as a reference again and was blessed to find your wonderful video. Just had to fly tonight, and it is worse than in the last 2 weeks all compounded at once! I will call my GP tomorrow. Thanks for a wonderful review for this old nurse! God Bless you!

Thank you for explaining this in a way that I as a mom can understand. My 9-year old has had the ear tubes put in 2x and both times because of chronic ear infections. Two months ago we noticed that he was asking us to repeat simple sentences and we realized that it was because he couldn't hear. No ear infection, no cold and allergies; he simply couldn't hear us. I took him to his ENT and he's about to have the tubes inserted for the 3rd time. We were told that the fluid was extremely thick. He didn't really give us an explanation as to how the fluid got there and why it was so thick. Again, thank you for the this video.

This is called chronic otitis media with effusion. I have it m, I am 37 and have had a tube in my ear since 2019. Whatever goes awry with making the mucous membrane in the middle ear think there is something invading, it seems to sometime misprogram the response. The myringotomy also let's air in, and that means pollen/dust/pathogens/pollution can irritate the membrane that excretes the serum as the mucous as the lining of the middle ear. Diet is also a huge and unfortunate contributor to the chronic effusion, and I have personally noticed that eliminating sugar and processed foods helps resolve the episodes. Sometimes the episodes go on for months and the effusion fluid becomes glue within a few hours of air freely reaching the tube. Blocking my ear off with sterile earplugs helps resolve that issue, as the smell can get pretty bad as the mucous becomes glue and oxidizes. Sterile ear plug also lowers airborne irritants from making it randomly start effusing again. There is no permanent solution it seems to me thus far, 4 years into this. There is only management of the frustrations.

i have always have ear fluids for most of my life, too. i had ear tubes inserted into both my ears when i was a teen, which helped a lot to prevent hearing loss on my right ear. however, just 5 years ago i accidentally poked a Q-tip too far and it either damaged or pushed my ear tube out, which caused fluids to build up again. now, to the main point, what helps me drain some of the fluids out from my good ear (right ear with fluids) is that i would use my pointing finger's tip and push into my ear's opening, push in slightly, then quickly retracts my finger tip which would create a vacuum (suction) to drain out the stuck fluids. you should give it a try. it works for me, while i'm saving up to get another ear tube inserted. also, another point to keep in mind is that, if you're like me, try to avoid fermented food at all cause to prevent ear fluid build-up's. i'm not too sure why, but every time i eat fermented food (hot dogs, beef jerkies, etc) i would get ear fluid build-up's. that and use an effective eardrop and get a ear tube inserted if you need one. good luck and stay safe.

Thank you for this detailed explanation of the importance of having one's ear checked due to fluid in the middle ear. You have re-affirmed my decision to see an ENT specialist for my left ear. After ten days of antibiotics, my left ear has cleared a little; however, the tinnitus remains loud and my hearing is still somewhat muffled. I've had issues in the past with this problem. I had to fly for business reasons and that made my ear problem much worse. I hope that I don't have permanent damage. Thanks again for posting your video!

Now on antibiotics again after two years no problems. Just sick of it. I read this treatment off the internet and it works for me everytime. 1. Highest daily dose possible of Guafenisin spread through out the day (I use Mucinex-D extra strenght). 2. Highest daily dose possible of Ibuprofen spread through out the day. 3. Flonase nasal spray (After spraying I pinch my nose and blow softly so it reaches the eustatian tubes. Look for videos on youtube on how to spray properly). After doing this protocol I start getting relief anywhere between 3 - 7 days. I know how frustrating this is and I hope this is helpful to someone. Consult with your doctor to make sure this is safe for you and theres no bad interations with other medicines. Nowadays I don't wait for my ears to become clogged. I start the protocol as soon as I feel a cold or congestion or scratchy throat as a preventive mesure.

Years? I'm just really worried about how long that fluid has been stuck in my son's ears because the ENT said it's been there awhile but of course he can't pinpoint how long. Not always, this may be a first, and this is a warning about using the NeilMed sinuflow, rather than the gentle application of a traditional neti pot, dangerously introduces human error in its application. After suffering from an allergic reaction to poor air filtration from a standard hotel room a/c unit, I decided to make a solution from garlic, ginger, and a saline packet, with the goal of reducing any inflammation in my sinus cavity. I used this solution in the NeilMed product, and applied too much pressure, and boom, itchy inner ear, followed by a clogged sensation in both of my ears which, at a week and a half now, is still an issue. I’ve tried all of the methods with plugging my nose, swallowing, using the NeilMed empty for air so I could do this, yawning, pressure point stimulation, sinus steaming with Vicks, Olbas oil, etc, steroid spray, nothing…so I guess I’m left to keep trying the steam and steroid spray and working with the pressure to manipulate my inner ear to release the finite debris or fluid trapped in there. The VA audiologist said it didn’t make sense that I would have a blocked Eustachian tube, that when I blow out with my nose plugged, my ear drums are moving, yet in the testing, my right ear drum wasn’t moving at all. Very frustrating, but lesson learned. Also, if you’re a smoker, it’s important to know that smoking can cause eustachian dysfunction.

To all you asking how to get the fluid out, it depends on how long you've had the condition. If you have the glue like fluid in the middle ear or fluid too thick to be drained through the Eustachian tube, you have to get a myringotomy. It's a very simple procedure where a small incision is made into the eardrum, and the fluid is suctioned out. There are small myringotomy tubes placed into the eardrum, which eventually grow into the eardrum. They stay for a few months to help drain fluid and regulate pressure. They fall out on their own after a few months. Myringotomy's are extremely simple and they usually do it under local anesthesia. It takes about 15 minutes for the procedure, and it really helps. Most doctor offices do it, but your best bet is a local ENT clinic.

Now I understand. This doctor knows more on this topic than any of the 3 ENT doctors that I have visited. I had an ear infection, fluid discharged, took months to clear with antibiotics, but was left with tinnitus, this changed to pulsatile tinnitus, CT scan shows thinning of the inner ear bone. Scans showed no fluid (I now know that this was likely absorbed by my middle ear bones and led to the thinning and pulsatile tinnitus). Now how to fix it.

Dear Keith, I had stapedectomy in 2007. I have !!significant!! (10% right, ear & 1% in left) hearing loss for one week due fluid in my middle ear. I am on a steroid & a decongestant starting today. I am worried about my stapes bone. Would that be ideal to wait it out for the meds to treat it vs. immediately having the surgical drainage?

Fluid just drained today. I was eight days following a mild cold, no pain but was an annoyance, hearing was muffled in left ear and could physically feel the fluid move when I shook my head side to side. Tried peroxide in the ear could hear it fizzing, also used a blow dryer, banging my head on a pillow none of those techniques appeared to work. I wasn't sure if it was swimmers ear I dove off a dock several weeks prior and thought it might of been the result of that. I'm thinking it was just a blocked Eustachian tube I woke up to a clear ear this morning and what a relief.

would be beneficial to explain what the treatment will be if it goes to the thick type i seen it getting vacuumed out via a slit in the ear drum and the result is almost an immediate hearing gain? i need this done as i have had this inner ear fluid now over 8 weeks its getting me down so much i can't deal with crowds and feel paranoia : (

interesting to hear/watch this information. My son, 11, has some water drops behind the ear drum. The Bangkok Hospital in Rayong already wanted to perform a Myringotomy by pursing the ear drum. I refused to do that. He took now some Beconase spray and some antibiotic, but sill some water left in the inner ear. But it's not infected yet. However, I wish not to wait for infection but want to avoid a surgery. Thanks to share this video - Daniel, Thailand

Thank you for the video, however you kind of have me in a panic. I've had ear fluid in my ear for a week now and it will not drain. Do you have any suggestions on how I can drain this fluid before it turns to a glue like consistency? Thank you!

@@NeoMK a video by Heather Wibbels on lymphatic drainage massage saved me. I did it five times a day and it helped me tremendously. I do it to this day when I have issues and have recommended her video to ppl who have also been helped by it.
