Eustachian Tube Dysfunction causes hearing loss, crackling, popping ears, tinnitus and glue ear. Here I test devices that are meant to help this condition. These are devices you can buy from amazon (see below), and try and help sort out your condition before ever needing to see a doctor. I would say however seeing a doctor would be prudent in all cases. I mention in the video that there are some conditions that cause eustachian tube disorder and they ought to be diagnosed as soon as possible (especially if you have nasal symptoms as well).
Anyway I hope you find the video useful.

Dear Vik My name is Tom, from Hong Kong. I don’t normally write comments but I must do that to express how much I am appreciated your input and the professional morality. I myself had been suffering from Eustachian tube issue for years. I do appreciated so much that you don’t put an operation / antibiotic prescription (real money for a doctor) as the first choice like any other doctor that I’ve came across in Hong Kong. Instead, you put yourself into a patient’s shoe to show us a wide range of suggestions. Thank you for doing that, I do hope that will be more doctor like you, putting the patient’s benefit, acknowledgement and feeling as priority. Good job Doctor Vik, you’ve earned my respect. May god bless you and your family.

I've always had ear problems. About 15 years ago, I had both ear drums rupture. The ENT did an inpatient procedure where they inserted tubes after chemically blanching my ear drum. It was nothing short of barbaric. Also, in the process of blanching my ear drum, they hit a nerve so all I could taste for 45 days was this zinc-metallic taste. The tubes they used then messed up and caused me more hearing problems and difficulties that led to another surgical procedure where they sedated me, removed the tubes, and inserted a different kind. My hearing was never the same. Fast forward, I spent the better part of last year in agony with my ears. I had perforated ear drums and drainage. When they did a hearing test, the only way I could hear was with a bone conductivity device. Finally, due to the marked hearing loss, they decided to do a eustacian tube dialation. The entire procedure cost $40k and did nothing to help. Now, they are saying my only option it to get tubes again...which they admit probably won't work. It is so frustrating.

About 6 years I got an ear infection and was nearly deaf for 6 weeks. I tried everything - decongestants, expectorants, steroid sprays, Valsalva, overcoming my gag reflex and massaging my throat. I literally could not hear people across the table from me and it played a role in losing a job. The wife suggested the Eustachi. I spent the $63 and popped my ears open in under 5 seconds. I've been using it ever since. My only complaint - the bottom battery contact has a bad habit of losing contact. I have to remove the batteries and use some small tools to bend it back inward again. This happens every few weeks.

One ear became suddenly half deaf when a snow storm moved in yesterday. This is the second time I've noticed this over two Winters. Got congestion too, instantly. I could "pop" my eardrums by pinching nose but that didn't help. Stayed like this for 20 hours. Today, I drank plenty of water, stuck my index finger in my weakened ear, grabbed my earlobe with my thumb and other fingers, and firmly pushed inward and pulled outwards in all directions (against and away from head) for 5 minutes as I spoke on the phone. Occasionally, I opened my mouth and strectched the pie hole. Hearing was back to normal at the end of the "therapy." And my ear and my face was happy I didn't have to keep on man handling it! Can't say I made it up entirely. I put three different KZfaq natural care doctors' advice together. Heat pack was also suggested by one of them, but not necessary for mine. Try it next time you get ear or sinus congestion. It's my ear bully technique! 😆

Basically when you have nasal infection using this can lead to transferring the infection to middle ear thru eustachian tube. This should be used once the initial infection is over but still there is non infective fluid in middle ear and residual edema/swelling in eustachian tube that needs improvement

Important note for those struggling with the Otovent. Try blowing up the balloon with your mouth and then hold the neck closed with your fingers and transfer to your nostril. Also, don't forget to swallow. You can put water in your mouth to remind you to swallow and get a good swallow. Swallowing is key. You can swallow while doing a valsalva, but it's much more difficult than using a device that provides the pressure for you. I tried for an hour to get my ear to unblock before I realized I wasn't swallowing and it cleared almost immediately after I added the swallowing step.

Actually, I just watched another video that crushed all of my hope because I've had plugged middle ears for years now and the guy said that by then it's glue ear and that won't drain without some intervention. Also, because liquid/glue has been stuck in their so long that some bones inside the ear soften and that causes of permanant hearing loss. My comment on that video was something to the effect of "so basically I'm fu*ked?" as a rhetorical question

Thank you doctor for the informative video. I have been suffering blocked ear and tinnitus since end of March this year. Managed to get an ENT appointment, who advised me to use Avamys and Sterimar for my ETD. I wasn’t aware of the term ETD previously. Since then, I have been using following: 1. Steroid spray - Nasonex and Avamys 2. Saline Nasal rinse 3. Sterimar spray (sea water) 4. Eustachi ear pressure relief device 5. Otovent (blow balloon through nose) 6. Steam inhalations with menthol and Abcus oils 7. Taking antihistamines Blocked/full ear, pain in ear, headache, pressure in ear and also tinnitus, I have to tolerate every second for last 3 months. Nothing seems to work. I came to a point that it is seriously affecting my mental health.

Thank-you so much for this informative video!! I didnt know if it was Ok or not to be popping my ears all the time including if it was bad for me or not. Im a nurse and my focus and attention on this issue has been increasing to the point of worry. Im so relieved now. I actually have tinnitus symptoms. I have always wondered why as I havent really been exposed to sudden or long term loud noises. Frequently I can't understand what's being said to me or in a group of people. The micro-brief relief from ear popping is frustrating & ear drops havent helped with anything as you said. Again, thanknyou for this valuable and relieving video. I have started the frequent ear popping. Optimistically looking forward to a long term positive outcome! Thank you, Sir.

Going to give these devices a try! I’ve ended up deaf in one/both ears after flying for most of my life - been trying to prevent that with Sudafed but TBH it’s never worked terribly well. I’ve tried special “equalising” ear plugs, otex, otrovine, you name it. The pain is *something else* - more than once I’ve felt like my ear drums were about to burst. I had glue ear as a kid and had my adenoids out (but didn’t have grommets thankfully), but no one has even given me helpful advice on how to manage this long term. Thank you!

I have etd symptoms in my left ear for 3 years now, without hearing loss. Got a tube 8 months ago, but seems my ear fullness remained, although the popping is less. Got etd symptoms inf right ear 9 months ago, after forcefully trying to pop my ear with the Valsalva maneuver. I have done so much research including TMD research, CT scans, MRI-scans, jaw physio, etc. None can see what is wrong. I am almost never able to pop my right ear, and don't want to overdo it as it may worsen the problems potentially. I really don't know what to do about it anymore.

@cheerbeerification
@cheerbeerification Жыл бұрын
If anything your tinnitus will get worse from the constant negative pressure in your middle ear. If you go slow and carefully you should be okay. The devices are designed to offer a pressure that is not enough to damage your eardrum. The Valsalva maneuver is the least safe as you can absolutely blow hard enough to rupture an eardrum. If both ears are blocked badly blowing hard enough to open your eustachian tubes could be enough force to rupture an eardrum. If only one ear is blocked, you should be able to gauge the right amount of safe pressure on the unblocked side as you will feel the pressure start to get uncomfortable.

Thanks for the video. I’ve had ETD for two years. My left ear drum has a hole in it that won’t heal and so unblocking my tubes by plugging my nose and blowing just pushes air through the hole. An ENT put a tube in that ear which gave me Hyperacusis. After two months of hell, he took the tube out. That was 8 months ago. The pressure is so great sometimes, my head feels like it’s going to explode. I can’t find that questionnaire your description but I think I need surgery.

All you need to do is hold your nose and blow pressure into your ear, just like you do when freediving to equalize the pressure... No need to buy special devices to do this, I have been doing it for 2 weeks now after 3 months of being almost deaf and the hearing immediately got tiny bit better but after doing it every day many times a day my hearing improved drastically. And all I did was hold my nose and blow pressure into the ears.

HI @Vik Veer - ENT Surgeon - I've had this issue for three weeks following an ear infection which cleared in less than a week. My hearing was muffled but has since returned to normal. But the following symptoms persist Tinnitus (I don't have a history of Tinnitus), sticky/Glued ear which I can feel when opening my jaw (feels less and less sticky every day) and cackling noise when I eat/drink/swallow (these symptoms are worse in the morning but gradually disappears through the day). Would you suggest I need to see an ENT specialist at this stage? I have been using Ototvent for seven days now on the advice of a doctor and initially used a decongestant spray when the symptoms of hearing loss were significantly worse. Keep up the great work!

If you ever get this problem, which I’ve had recently, do not go to doctor. I went completely deaf. 4 doctors, 2 private, 2 NHS didn’t even attempt to diagnose my problem. Sent me way with loads of steroids. Since I was close to get blind by steroids, I didn’t take any. Got better by consulting utube doctors. There is a lot better technique than balloons, shut both sides of the nose and blow hard for 5 seconds X 5, couple of times a day. I am now close to my hearing to before it all started.

I have a couple of questions about using otovent.... Can you use it too often (ie more than 3 times a day)? When I inflate it and swallow water, the balloon does not deflate. This is no matter which side. Is there still value in using it? Could I be making things worse? Thank you so much for your videos. They are brilliant and super super helpful! It's useful to know what is happening and why, especially these days when you feel like you are working through things on your own. My background: I woke up early June with a blocked ear, tinnitus and falling to the right. The audiologist said I have mild sensorineural hearing loss in that ear. MRI ruled out acoustic neuroma. I've been to a vestibular physio and I'm working on the dizziness. Can't pop my ears and the GP I saw in August said there's fluid behind the eardrum, and that I should ask the ENT surgeon about grommets when I see him (in late Sept).

Hi there Jacqueline. My right ear blocked up last week after a very short cold. My Otovent device came yesterday and I have used it both yesterday and today on a few occasions with no difference at all. I was thinking about making an appointment with my local hearing clinic tomorrow. Have you got any advice?

Hello Mr Veer, just want to be straightforward, currently my 25th day after septoplasty and turbinoplasty and the symptoms are unique and alarming, I don’t know why I feel like I need to assure myself to let someone know how I feel like if I was crazy, nobody has taken me serious yet, not my surgeon either.. I present ENS with ¡no sensation of the action of breathing!, in addition to atrophic rhinitis, and that’s only in the nose.. On my ears I present failure in my Eustachian tube my ears are always full and popping for hours during different times of the day and it also doesn’t fully drain the sinus rinses water properly, I give props to myself and idc who doesn’t believe me for staying positive for my own brain’s sake. I wish you could consider a random patient venting like myself on a serious note. I’ve always been an athlete before the surgery, and I remember NOT REMEMBERING that I had to breathe all of the time, like my brain tells me to breathe 24/7 ¡breathing being an automatic and involuntary action! When I had a deviated septum, it’s was always only constant allergies but I never had to focus on breathe to not suffocate 😡🥺 But with ENS ¡ I’m aware of every single breath I take making it the weirdest change my brain has aggressively had, I feel like air suffocates me like if as if my nose doesn’t realize how to breathe involuntarily and automatically anymore 😓😓 I’m from Colombia 🇨🇴 and can 100% assure you I’m weaker as time passes by, so I know it’s a serious urgency… NO ONE TAKES ME SERIOUS DOCTOR, I’M TERRIFIED… 😓

Every time I get sick I experience Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. It is particularly bad this time around. My wife was over the same illness in less than 2 weeks and never had any ear problems. I have been sick for over a month and have had severe ear pain on and off. I lay on the opposite side of the ear that is worse while sleeping in order to drain it but the other side gets blocked by the time one side gets better. I am genuinely questioning if I need to get the balloon operation to prevent these issues in the future. I feel like the slow drainage makes me stay sick longer.

Hi dr I have had this condition for many years and I was doing the exercise of pinching my nose and blowing. When I did this, I got a tingling sensation along my left side of nose and my eye on the same side began to water. Is this because of the fluid stuck there? I have chronic rhinosinusitis non allergy . Thanks

FYI - you don't use during ear infection. When infection clears up. The otovent works, my ENT recommended it. In your video you used it wrong. You connect the balloon to the end of device. You blow up balloon by putting your mouth on the ball with hole of the other end of device. You immediately pinch the end of balloon so as not to lose the air . You out water in your mouth hold it there. Now you you out the round end of device in your nose while still pinching balloon. Your pinch off your other nostril . Now stop pinching balloon. As the air from balloon enters nose, start swallowing the water at same time This will cause the estachian tube to open and start draining. I did this for two days I got all my hearing back after three weeks of not being able to hear. It works the otovent. , See your doctor first . After antibiotics and steroids this was the next step before having to do tubes. Infection cleared up but fluid was still behind ear drum. Otovent worked for me after two days after doing twice a day. It takes time.

Hello Doctor Vik Veer, I love your passion for your patients and viewers. Im suffering with a Middle Ear Infection in my right ear that was treated with Amoxicillin after 3rd different GP noticed the infection. I had glue ear but after the 7 day course it cleared it up. Its defintely improved but still my right ear can't pop over 2 weeks. I went to UCL hospital and was given Flixonase Aqueous Nasal Spray last Thursday and seems to be slowly improving but Eustachian Ear not popped and lots of crackling when chewing or yawning. I can ear clearly in both ears but get some sensation in my left ear either by trying to blow air through nose. Is this usual with a blocked ear and whats my outlook for my ear returning back to normal? How long should I give it before returing to my GP or Doctor? Cheers Doctor Veer. P.S Would you recommend continuing to try and pop my ears on reguarl basis with these devices listed?

Plz help me Sometimes my ear feels like it's empty when I breathe in, it feels like I'm breathing in my ear, when I breathe out, my ear drum feels like it's full. Maybe it's because I don't always have the discomfort. CT scans don't show any defects either, but it gives me a lot of trouble. Physical or mental. Can anyone tell me if the above treatment will work for me? I have used many things like nasal sprays.

So, i have ETD and my ear drum burst on a plane three years ago. I had the balloon procedure for ETD, but it still clogs. I can’t pop my ears using the valsalva method. I used the eustaci, held water in my mouth, turned on the eustaci and swallow. Are you saying that swallowing while using it or the ear popper will suck your ear drum in? My ent said my ear drum was sucked in some. Also, What do you think about the humming videos where you hum a certain tone to make vibrations to produce a small burst nitric oxide in your sinuses? I’ve been doing it and it does seem to help. My ear is unclogging some.

If it works for you, I'm all for it. When I used the Eustachi and swallowed, it caused the opposite of what I wanted. It might be different for you. Only way to know for sure is to get someone to check your ears whilst you are doing it.

Had blocked ear or ears nearly every every waking hour of the day for months on end. Allergy meds do nothing, Steroids' don't help, plug and pop method does nothing, eustachi is a useless money suck. Hundreds of $$$ at the doctor for ZERO relief, think I can get a refund? HA. In all seriousness, this issue is causing me to lose focus at work, and probably more concerning, it's seriously impacting my mental health. I'm legit losing it. People can laugh, but imagine hearing an echo of every breath, every heartbeat, every move of your jaw, every throat clear, every word, every sound your body makes for hours and hours without end and NOTHING you do makes it go away. Its MADDENING! Oh, I also have auditory sensory issues due to a disability, so whatever you're imagining, increase it 100 fold. I've literally been daydreaming about ripping my eardrum apart to allow the blockage to drain. That's how desperate I've become. I hate this.

Hi doctor, i have hyperacusis & misophonia all my life. Its been curse & blessing. When Im just about to accept my difference, on Jan this year, someone blast off his phone speaker near me, made my ears in pain, numb, ringing, clogged up & stuffed. All my left side from ear, nose & throat feels numb & clogged up, throats hurt. Only 2 weeks after that went to ent, told me the wind cant get passed through (left ear - sensitive one), got meds for 2 weeks, went again, told me the wind can passed through now. But when I told him it still feels the same, he told me to go to big hospital, just like he abandoned me. In June, I got slapped repeatedly also on my left ear, which makes it worse. Been to audiologist, test, normal. Been in several meds including meds & injection for nerve, antibiotics, inflammation, etc. Early this month, it feels like I got the sensitivity back, not clogged up anymore, but just this week, its back to square one. Didnt even wanna talk cause it feels like I talk under water? Makes me feels dizzy, for whole week I just lay in bed, couldnt move bcause of fever causing by headache. Wanna try one of these product too..but dont know which one. Wish someone could help me. Its taking toll on my physical & mental health too. Been crying myself to sleep all this time. Before, I got anxious & couldnt sleep bcause of the sensitivity to sound. Now, anxious & also couldnt sleep bcause I cant hear like I used to..☹️
